Blue Spot 7 Year Cask Strength Irish Whiskey Review! Better than Redbreast 12 CS?

  • Blue Spot is back!! Just like the maturation profiles we see in Yellow Spot and Red Spot, this release uses
whiskeys matured in ex-bourbon and ex-sherry casks with the inclusion of a wine cask component, in this case Madeira casks. They state that the components age’s range between 7-20 years, it has been bottled at 58.7% cask strength which will vary from batch to batch, non-chill filtered and retails for about 100 bucks.

Blue Spot is an incredible pour.
I live in an abc state so RB12CS cost about 96 now and is readily available. Blue Spot is 89 and hard to get. I made a mistake by only buying 2 bottles instead of 2 cases.
Long time Irish fan. Love going to Ireland and buying hard to get or not sold outside of Ireland bottles.

I walked into my local Total Wine here in San Antonio Texas today and they had just put this on the shelf. I was scratching my head because I had never heard of a blue spot and decided to pick one up in time for St. Patrick’s Day. I guess a little luck of the Irish was with me today!

I live at the end of Bow Street. The Jameson tour is a tourist trap, but the Whiskey bar is one of the best.
Blue spot is hard to come by, but you can still find it at Dublin Airport. I asked a friend to grab a bottle for me. It is definitely one of my favourite Whiskeys.
There's nothing quite like Single Pot Still. And Portuguese barrels ;)

Just saw this at BevMo this AM! I've never heard of Blue Spot!! Having been a HUGE fan of Yellow Spot and Green spot I snagged a bottle. It was only $79.99. Can't wait to pop it open this weekend! My Irish whisky collection is growing. Can't get enough of the stuff.

Jason, as usual you are "spot on" with this review (sorry couldn't pass it up) Redbreast is just a way better value in any edition. I personally really enjoy the Lustau that comes in as a NAS that is supposed to be 10 to 12 years, non chill filtered with no added color. ABV is 46%, priced at $65 to $70 and is a flavor sherry bomb. Great review as always. Thanks

GREAT Review Jason!! Definitely Got my attention!! Here is what I was drinking tonight!!
    SLÁINTE
    Mike
A week ago 1/23/21, I was in a local liquor store in Park Slope, Brooklyn and I happened to see a Bottle of GLENDALOUGH, Irish Pot Still Whiskey Finished in Irish Oak. this being rare, I bought the bottle! Here are my Impressions:
GLENDALOUGH Single Pot Still Irish Whiskey
    1/30/21
NAS, 43% ABV. Matured in First Fill Ex-Bourbon Barrels; then Finished for not more than a year in Irish Oak (Dair Ghealach) HogsHeads from the Wicklow Mountains. Glendalough= Glenn Dá Loch (Valley of Two Lakes)
    Batch 1, Cask #3, Bottle 116, Tree 8A
COLOR: Dark Amber, Nice ring with Legs running variously
NOSE: Slight Varnish with Hard Grape Candy note Also some pleasant unidentified notes.
PALATE: Slight Varnish with a light Dry wood and pepper spice notes on my tongue. The mouthfeel is creamy. There is also another pleasant note that I can note identify. The spice note is very light.
FINISH: Creamy going down with a light pepper remaining on my tongue and rising from my throat; resolving to a light sweet cream note
With 1 drop of Spring Water
NOSE: Light Sweet Cream Note and Light Honey, Very, Very Faint Varnish
PALATE: Light Pepper on arrival with a Dry Wood note ,faint Varnish, light Honey and a light Sweet Cream note. The mouthfeel is Creamy. A very light pepper note rises as I let the spirit sit in my mouth.
FINISH: Dry with a sugary Sweetness on my Tongue
    With 2 Drops of Water
NOSE: Light Honey note, Faint Grape note
PALATE: Very Faint Varnish note, Dry wood following. There is pepper as I swirl it around and some Alcohol Burn. The mouthfeel is creamy and there is a faint Honey note.
FINISH: Very Spicy going down with a sandpaper dryness on my the walls of my mouth light pepper.
I enjoy this whiskey! The Varnish note takes away a little bit, but it is light and other good notes shine through. The varnish note may be a reflection of youth.
I was happy to find this whiskey seeing that it is finished in Irish Oak. The notes of this whiskey arrange uniquely although, they are familiar, Honey, Grape, Sweet Cream. The Dry wood note is the most interesting because this is NAS whiskey, but the Dry Oak note acts as a serving tray for the other notes and adds complexity. Interesting also is the lightness of the pepper/spice note. It only was heavy with 2 drops of water. This is also where the alcohol burn popped up!
It comes together for a unique experience. I have drank to below the shoulder so air has mixed with spirit and I am looking forward to it opening more. Highly recommended for its finishing in Irish Oak, Dair= Oak Gaelach=Irish and the unique experience it brings!!

Im a little confused on the price comparison. the original RB12 bottled at 40%ABV costs $72 where Im at. Pretty sure RB12 CS is punching up around $100. Additionally, from a marketing standpoint, I get your point about the age expression, but it isn’t whats on the bottle that counts; it is what’s in the bottle. Anyway, good video overall. Cheers.

  • @phacomd
    @phacomd 3 ปีที่แล้ว

So the RB12CS seems to be going away for a NAS RBCS. Price is higher too at least from what I’ve seen on the shelf ($100 v $85 so the NAS RB is par to Blue Spot). Haven’t tried the NAS but why would I when the age stated is still available.
Now as a self admitting whisk(e)y nerd, I can wait to try the BS. It’s just a matter finding a bottle.

I don't know how I just now caught this review, but Jason...RB12 C.S. is not $65! Maybe the regular RB12, but the C.S. was near $90ish in any Binny's before they discontinued it for the NAS. I'd pay a Benny right now for the bottle you're probably half done with cuz it's cheaper than a flight to Dublin and I can't find one lol

I think you mistakenly referred to the regular RB12 price when you you were comparing prices for value. RB12 cask strength is around $100 or more in many places, but your point is still valid since the Blue Spot only has a 7yr age statement versus the 12yr age statement on RB.

Great review! I love CS RB12. I agree 100% on the value. Why pay less for Blue Spot than for RB with a higher age statement? That said, age statement isn't really indicative of quality. I will inevitably end up with a bottle (if it every hits my area). I love the Irish content. Ever thought about doing a rum review or two? Maybe in a future episode of Mash & Minnick?

Yeah. Apparently I'm lucky for the price I get it for but either way the 12 may seem a better value than 7. However I liked the flavors in the blue spot a bit more

Quick note... your banner at 5:34 says 94 proof... 58.7% ABV. I am assuming the latter is correct and the former is for some of the other spot colors. All the other spots are 92, so I don;t know where 94 came from.

Again, for those who aren't aware... the Redbreast 12CS is gone. There may be some on left shelves but it's been discontinued for some time now, replaced with a NAS bottling. Value is a moving target here... (It was also $85 in this market, not 65 - that'd be the 40% 12's price, and -edit- I just picked up a Blue Spot this week for $96. So only about $10 apart for me.)
