Telescoping magnets work great for pulling tstat wire. Tie a small link chain to one end of the wire, drop it into the wall, use magnet to go in the wall and pull the chain through

One very important tool you missed out is heavy duty magnet that keeps the door switch closed while you checking furnace in the attic

  • @markallan9050
    @markallan9050 4 ปีที่แล้ว +8

All very good tools. Another few that are under $30 that are good to carry are:
    11 in one screwdriver
    Non contact volt detector
    Inspection mirror
Service wrench with gas valve test port bit
Malco 5/16 and 1/4" combo impact bit
    Husky precision screwdriver set
Titan palm ratchet with screwdriver bits
All little cheap trinkets i cant live without when servicing furnaces. Also cool pro tip you can tape or wire a match to your extendable magnet to light tough to reach pilots. Theres a company that makes a tool called the extend a match which is like a telescoping alligator clip for this purpose. Sweet video man!

I have had mine for about a month( malco 2in1 1/4-5/16) always gets stuck and have to bust out the channel locks to switch it around. I would personally recomend the dewalt magnetic clean out bits way better they have a slide on them that pushes the magnetic part of the bit all the way out favourite bits.

I recently had to work on a piece of equipment where I ran into a situation that I had to go down to the hardware store and purchase two of those 12 inch Milwaukee extensions and a 6 inch one and put them all together as one large extension because I couldn’t reach in there with my arm due to space restrictions and I didn’t want to have to take the front off the piece of equipment just due to the amount of fasteners I would have to remove… What a pain in the keister. It worked out OK but that’s the first time I’ve ever needed like a 30 inch extension and the funny thing was I was using it with my little Kline mini ratchet because the fasteners were a little tiny fasteners that I didn’t want to strip out.

Everyone says to use the malco1/4-5/16, I personally hate fighting it, it always gets stuck and have to use chanel locks to switch it around, my favorite bits are the dewalt magentic clean out bits(1/4,5/16,3/8) they last FOREVER and are a breeze to use. By the time I grab my channel locks and flip it around I might as well have switched bits. Installer/tech

  • @trunks2505

I have all those tools already(except the last of course). I was searching through the HVAC reddit boards, seen, and started collecting tools that different techs swear are life savers. I'm an installer so the jumpers and my "Short pro tool=mini 24v breaker" are the only two tools I rarely use.
Do you have 5 honorable mentions? I clicked this video pumped to see what the TH-cam channel I frequent the most had that could be special only to already have them.
BTW, of course, thank you for this. Without Reddit, this video would have helped me immensely. I have techs where I work, most don't even have tools like this and they're not expensive. Or if you make another to the $75 dollar range, I'll be sure to check that out too. I most definitely consider this a top notch TH-cam channel for HVAC. Extremely helpful. Oh yeah, I don't have magnetic jumpers though.

Ah man.. Sorry to hear you already have all those and nothing stood out to you. Thank you for the positive comment though! This video is getting a lot of tool suggestions in the comments so there's a good chance there will be a sequel later on :) I am thinking of perhaps splurging and buying 10-20 suggested tools that I don't yet have and making a video with those next.

    Agree need a solder iron.
Been on jobs where was a cold solder joint & was middle night holiday, had a spare board . Replaced 4-5 of them that winter.
A solder iron been a temp fix.
Carry more than two jumpers , seen some elaborate units where used three.
Dental pick is good for O ring removal.
One last thing, keep a small bottle of pain pills some where in your bag or Van , ammonium A.D. Also.
I've been out 30 hours strait a few times in the old days, even a few caffeine pills .

Awesome video BUD. Appreciate your sincere effort AND commitment in making these videos. RESPECT.. (from DFW, Texas)
    1. Milwaukee 6 in 1 Wire stripping and Reaming pliers.
    2. Klein 4 in 1 Precision electronics screwdriver.
    3. Klein 1/4" and 5/16" nut drivers.
    3. Yellow Jacket Gasket removal tool.
Just to name a few "brand specific" basic tools that from my own experience, have found really solid and well built. As far as listing the Nut Drivers. My thoughts are that for the simple tasks such as taking off an electrical compartment cover or pulling a flame sensor, using an "old school" nut driver is as, if not, more effective practice. How many outdoor covers have we come across that are not able to be properly secured due to stripped screw holes from being over torqued by impact drivers? Too many in my experience.. Reducing this problem in the field would be a win for all of us. Just my opinion, does anyone agree?

    • @WordofAdviceTV
      @WordofAdviceTV  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

Thank you Benjamin!! Glad you like the videos and appreciate your comment and the additional tool suggestions! I agree that it is annoying to find stripped screw holes. The Milwaukee drill I showed at the end is the one I always use and it has a low spin speed which reduces the possibility of stripping anything. Haha well and most of the senior techs I worked with drilled it into me.. The fact that I should NEVER set the torque high. "2 is as high as you can go" Lol. I also work on other household appliances that have a lot of plastic parts, having the torque set low becomes even more vital with those.. I wish I would have mentioned this in the video but thank you for bringing it up! Maybe I will make a separate short video about setting the torque low. Interested to see what other veteran techs will have to say though :)

      Update:
Since watching you showcase AND speak on your Milwaukee screw gun, I actually picked one up at Home Depot. On sale for $59 that day! I must say that I am really enjoying it. I am a hvac service technician. You were right about the clutch feature. Works great for applying just enough torque. I also really enjoy the size and weight of it. Thanks for exposing me to it. IDK if you’re into open top tool totes but i just picked up a Veto MCT-OT and it’s pretty awesome.

Hi I really enjoy your videos. I’m new to the trade and I have all the hand tools I need but I have been trying to figure out a store I can go to to get HVAC tools like manifold gauge sets Schrader valve removal tool ball valve attatchment for gauge sets stuff like this that aren’t really sold at Home Depot or Lowe’s. Is there a store that specifically sells HVAC parts and tools that I can browse? I know I can probably find the things I need from amazon but I would rather find a store that I can browse. A few must-haves you missed that I use EVERY day:
a kneeling pad - your knees won't last forever
Right angle needlenose pliers - good for lots of things, but especially for hose clamps at weird angles
    Small 1/4" ratchet set
Thumb driver - super handy on its own, and as an adapter www.lowes.com/pd/Kobalt-4-Piece-Steel-Handle-Ratcheting-Multi-Bit-Screwdriver-Set/1000566887
And this is one of the best tools I've ever used - parallel, smooth jaw, pliers - the mini version is perfect for tool bag and small spaces

I don't know what state you are in but here in Minnesota I am sure you would be hired real quick. I would first decide whether to do residential or commercial and then apply in a couple different places close to where you live. Techs are in pretty high demand right now so I don't imagine you will have a hard time getting a job in the field.
