  • Third & final part of our 2023 Holland America dinner food four & review at the main dining room. This episode showcases some of the best entrees from our July 2023 back-to-back HAL cruises, including the Gold Gala, Blue Gala, and the farewell night of the cruise. All the food you see in the video are complimentary, included with your cruise fare.
    00:59 Night 6
    08:34 Night 7
    13:59 Gold Gala
    19:25 Blue Gala
    24:00 Final Night of cruise
    Please note that the dinner menu for day 7 actually had 2 variations from our back to back cruises- one had shrimp tacos and Prime Rib, while the other had steamed asparagus and Beef Stroganoff that was similar to day 5.
    BTW, the second formal night was the Gold Gala, but because our second cruise was 14 days, Holland America added another formal night, and that was the Blue Gala.

    She is so adorable! Love how much she likes food, Her "perfect bites" and especially when she doesn't like it. Her description helps understand why and if you would think the same. I am mostly vegetarian, but will eat fish if its really good. I trust her judgment on the fish and since she usually really likes the vegetarian dishes too i can see it would be wonderfully difficult choice. I'm not used to having choices. Excellent and helpful video for me.

      Thank you very much for the kind comment! 😊 We're glad you enjoyed the tastings and found them to be helpful. HAL had some excellent vegetarian & fish entrees, and it's no problem if you want order both 🙂

    Can’t go wrong with beef tenderloin! The ox tails look exquisite!

  • @TVHouseHistorian

    Now *THIS* is cruise food. I wish every cruise line would pay such close attention to their food offerings. The oxtails definitely stand out to me, but there were so many more dishes here that I would jump on as well. Come to think of it, the calf’s liver looked amazing. Also, anything with lamb and mint sauce I am a huge fan of. Even the vegetarian dishes looked sensational. I’m just so impressed with what I see here. I’ve been mulling over doing an HAL cruise, but I think to get the best food experience I’m going to have to opt for a 10-day or longer cruise. It just needs to happen 😅

    • @TravelTouristVideos
      @TravelTouristVideos  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Yeah that ox tail was quite tasty, and overall we really enjoyed MDR dinner. It was great that HAL didn't just keep repeating the same menu, so the 14 day did have a few unique menus after the 10th day vs the first 10 day cruise. Thanks for the comment Scott! 😊

      @@TravelTouristVideos It was fun to come back and watch this series now that I've done a cruise with HAL. Mine was only an Alaskan voyage, so I wasn't sure the food was going to be quite to this caliber. To my surprise, the food in the MDR was as good or better than what I see here! To be honest, the menus on my voyage were different than what you had here on the Nieuw Statendam. The only menu item I recognize from the sailing I took is the escargots bourguignon. For me, it's not a cruise without my escargots bourguignon - although I think Royal Caribbean does it best. The cruise line must have heard Joann's comments about the Crème brûlée, because I remember the crust being on-point when I had it on the Koningsdam. While HAL is probably not my favorite cruise line in terms of the overall experience, I felt their MDR food was the best I've ever had. The way they present the food is so special. You don't even need to do specialty dining. Even breakfast in the MDR was exceptional, and you can't say that about every cruise line.

    • @TravelTouristVideos

      @@TVHouseHistorian Scott- great to hear that the food you had was even better! Also good to know that the food was different from your Alaska voyage. Glad to hear HAL's Crème Brûlée has gotten better lol. They had a poor one on ours and it's not available nightly- they only had it on the gluten-free menu. Agree w/ your assessment that HAL's MDR food presentation & taste are arguably the best among the mainstream lines. And that's without having a lobster night. They had some unique breakfast dishes that we remember fondly as well. Specialty dining isn't necessary, especially with their excellent buffet too.

    Another super video! It's so much fun to see the variety of food. We see lots of dishes that can be made vegan just by removing the cheese. I'm going to recommend your videos to all of my vegan groups so they can do the same.
    Your wife has such a sophisticated palette. Then there's that cute smile when she's not impressed. Lol. I love that you're showing your son the world. He's going to be such a sophisticated man.

      Our pleasure- glad you enjoyed it! Yeah there were quite a few vegetarian dishes but pretty sure they can be made vegan w/o the cheese. They were pretty accommodating, and even have a gluten-free menu as well. Yes the little guy has cruised so many times now and is a bit spoiled by the quality of food on the ships lol. Everything was plated so elegantly. It’s so nice to see that HAL still cares about their presentation. As soon as I saw “Grand Marnier Crème Brûlée” on the menu I knew it was going to be bad. Alcohol RUINS creme brûlée and I don’t understand why the chef lets this abomination continue. I’m sorry Joanne had to endure even one bite of it. 😕 The crispy shrimp with jasmine rice was my favorite. Thanks for another wonderful video!

    Absolutely love your videos and commentary is making me so excited for my trip and helping me decide what I should order or where to get food with my needs. Do you know if they cater to dietary needs like garlic and gluten intolerances in dinning or is it better to go to the lido market and try and find food there?

    • @TravelTouristVideos
      @TravelTouristVideos  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you very much! 😊 You can specify your dietary needs/requests when you do the online check-in on HAL's website and they will try their best to accommodate. You can try both the MDR and the lido market, especially if you go early at the main dining (you might want to get there a few minutes before opening). Have a wonderful cruise!

    Overall it looks really good. I'm assuming you were not getting 'appetizer sized entrees'. It looks like they've done some portion shrinkage, but I can handle that if the quality is still there. I'll definitely get an extra appetizer on my next Hal. Often we make a final stop in the lido anyway for another dessert.

    • @TravelTouristVideos
      @TravelTouristVideos  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Nope though we usually order and mostly finish 2 mains per person. But yeah the lido always seem to have good stuff so it helps to not be 100% full from the mdr. Thanks for the comment! 🙂

    I am considering taking a cruise with my husband for the first time… do you have suggestions? Which cruise ship or company is the nicest to cruise with? As far as cleanliness, good food, nice staff , etc

    • @TravelTouristVideos
      @TravelTouristVideos  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      That's a great question, and a lot of it depends on your own preferences. Carnival, MSC & the bigger NCL ships if you like to partake in festive parties just about nightly. Entertainment-wise the Oasis-class Royal Caribbean ships are pretty amazing with ice skating shows, diving shows, comedies, Broadway musical, etc. Carnival also has a dedicated comedy club too. For food, the best would be Holland America, Cunard, Princess & Celebrity (the newer Edge-class ships). Those lines are not as festive, though still has many activities and live music. Carnival has pretty good food too actually, especially if you enjoy casual dining. All the major lines typically are clean and have good service.

    No argument that the dishes reviewed taste well, however, no mention is made with respect the the "amount" of food presented in the appetizers and the main courses. For example, an appetizer consisting of 2-3 baby shrimp hiding under large bread crostini and lettuce makes a mockery of traditional "cruise food". The human mouth needs more than what is provided for its taste buds to gauge the real taste of the food. The motive to de-content cruise cuisine to drive a cruise line's profit motives needs further consideration.
