It really is up to what people are looking for. People need to start thinking about what goals/careers they want to get into and think about how to get there. Don't just go to school for vague goals like get a degree and get whatever job because you'll just be lacking passion and motivation that is needed to succeed. Like if you want a career in cooking, go train under a chef or cooking school, if you want to be a researcher, get into academia that offers a great program, if you want to be good at business, hone in all of your math, logic, and negotiation skills by whatever means that work best for you (online school/college/workshops). This idea that everyone should go to college or fail in life is a detrimental mindset because it's not about having a degree, it's about knowing what you're doing, both in a job and in life.
Some people know right away what they want to do so they don't feel the need to go through high school, unfortunately, many employers have high requirements in place and this is what restrict people's options. Meanwhile others go through high school and college to explore and pass time before even figuring out what they want to do. But anyway, best of luck to you and everyone else chasing their dreams.

Depending on the field no you don’t need a degree, however you may need to be certified, Doctors, lawyers or a specific profession you definitely need maybe a few degrees and certified for good reason. Some companies will hire based on experience/talent, other jobs hire based on a degree and/or experience. You don’t need a degree to be an inventor or creat tech, or make apps to get the job, but you are competing against other techies that have a design degree and can make apps too

Elon misspoke. He said “there’s no reason that you need to get a college degree.”
What he should have said is “there should be no reason that a college degree is a requirement.”
Try practicing law or medicine without a degree and see what happens.
People with proven knowledge, experience and ethics should be able to apply for a law or medical license, but they are not allowed to do so in most places.
A few states in the United States, allow for an apprenticeship in law, and allow those apprentices to take the bar exam, and become attorneys without having a degree.
Every state should be like that. In fact, every state should require an apprenticeship in law and other fields.
At least, the medical profession requires an “apprenticeship” before allowing doctors to see patients on their own.

School not only teaches learning materials, but also helps students to get along socially; and so teaches sociology through real life experience. ( very hopefully, without bullying) I think as kids and teenagers and students come in contact with others, they get to learn more about life, how others think, and so are able to think more deeply. I think that would help in applying what they have learned in school, later on in their career.

This idea that everyone should go to college or fail in life is a detrimental mindset because it's not about having a degree, it's about knowing your strengths and how you're going to put them to work, both in a job and in life.
Some people know right away what they want to do so they don't feel the need to go through high school/college, unfortunately, many employers have high requirements in place and this is what restrict people's options. Meanwhile others go through high school and college to explore and pass time before even figuring out what they want to do. But anyway, best of luck to everyone chasing their dream career.

Yes, he has said that a degree and exceptional cases and degree isn't mandatory for success, and that's true. His companies, like Tesla and SpaceX, may ask for a degree in some job postings, but that doesn't mean it's the only path to success. Many successful people have achieved great things without a degree, relying instead on their skills, determination, and creativity.
So, while having a degree can open up opportunities, it's not the only way to succeed. It's essential to focus on developing your skills, gaining experience, and pursuing your passions, whether or not you have a degree. Ultimately, it's about finding the right path for you and making the most of your strengths and opportunities.
He doesnt mean to say you don't need a degree, but most of your degree as useless as you just have a degree and not the inputs the degree has like skills, creativity, inmovations etc etc....!!

Elon Musk is not a college dropout. In fact, he has TWO Bachelor degrees; a BA in Physics, which is very different from a BS in physics, and a BS in economics from the University of Pennsylvania - an Ivy League university. He deferred his PhD for six months then quit two days after transferring to Stanford and later founded Zip2, but he is NOT a college dropout. A college drop out is someone who quits before completing their undergraduate degree. Be wary of those who diminish the value of higher education or attempt to deter you from learning in academic environments. Yes, there are many ways to learn and college and high school educations are not a requirement for success nor do they guarantee success but that does not mean that they are without value.

College should be one option out of many for helping people select a career path for themselves. There needs to be other options especially work-study options for young people. I was out of college ten years before I was able to decide what I actually *want* to do as a career. And I only figured it out through a lot of travel, and trial and error. Unless you are on a college track, there is no one out here to guide you, other than psychologists and career counselors, (but they really can’t help you if you don’t know what your goals are).
