This is the very final episode of the OSRS Podcast pilots! But don't despair, we're going to bring you more (we're just not sure when). We'd love to hear from you - which J-Mods or Creators would you like to see sit down with Ayiza and Sween on future episodes? Just a note: this was filmed at the beginning of 2024, so some topics might seem a bit dated!
Why is this being released almost a year after it was made? I get it, you want it to be professional quality, but podcasts feel 10x better/more engaging when they're up to date and talking about current events/community topics, etc. Still a fan though, keep these coming.
I’ve never heard Mod Kieren talk before but I really can’t put into words how comforting it is to have someone with such a fundamental understanding of the game in such a high position, love this game.
i wouldnt say super hostile, but id say defensive. if you hear what they are saying, they are talking about very big changes . this isnt Rs3, lets just chill and keep things how they are for awhile. or make sailing the "profit skill"
What this really needs is a strong "Podcast" branding. I believe its important because this is such an honest and personal side of the J-Mods. It's really good content and it should be treated separately. The title made me feel like this is normal content like the j-mod q and a. The specific branding could pop out to me as a consumer and make me look forward to those thumbnails or cool title to pop up on my feed. this type of content is markedly different than what you guys normally release on this channel and its awesome.
I've always considered myself a long term casual player of RS, like I played in 07, 08, 09, and fell off. And started playing again when OSRS released. I still don't play all the time, and sometimes go a year or so without playing. This video is the first thing that has genuinely given me the itch to play again in a long time.
Can I just say, I LOVE this man's passion for the game, its infectious Playing a range of MMOs you don't get this from other interviews, this is why Old School Runescape is one of the few MMOs on the up!
if theatre of blood was done in the pub around the corner; come up with more content in the pub around the corner with the same group of people. TOB is still, to this day, the best content you guys ever put out.
I've played Runescape for over 20 years now and I genuinely believe OSRS has never been better. Truly the golden era for the game and the design direction is phenomenal. No other dev team I know of consults and engages the community as well as the OSRS team.
personally i burn out a lot on osrs, and unfortunately that's a game design flaw, burnout is caused by your efforts not being rewarded, osrs is nice but since 2013 it respects your time less and less
@TheROZOZOZO burnout happens in every MMO...? I and most people I engage with in the community only really burnout when grinding one piece of content. Switch it up, have 3-4 goals at a time of different types of content.
This is why I love this game. The creators and employees of Jagex genuinely care so much about it. I played when RS2 came out as a kid and I recently came back to OSRS (as a 31 year old) having watched content creators on TH-cam for years. I'm honestly having the most fun on a game in a very long time. WoW lost its charm for me and coming back to OSRS and getting into raiding, Skilling, running the Corrupted Gauntlet has been incredible. I also got my first 99 ever! (Never thought that would happen as a kid). Love what you're all doing at Jagex. May the good times roll for as long as they can :)
Man, separate from the game, it’s so sick to see Mod Kieren progress professionally from the beginning to now, he seems to genuinely be loving what he’s doing and is able to work on the game in completely new ways! Shout out to him 💯
Kieren is awesome. First time I saw him was as a friend of Simon and James from a Runeshark podcast, and then a few years later he became employed by Jagex
I have never watched one of these streams but I'm 20 minutes in listening to this designer and am in awe of his level of comprehension of what the player base wants and or needs. Super impressive! I was maxed Rs3, and now I'm 3 quests till QPC on OS! Amazing to know that the team behind the curtains treats this game with the respect it deserves and realize the emotions that are tied up in this game and how gentle you have to be with it, I bet it makes math fun now! I would love to code a mechanic everyone hates! Haha
The game is really in a good spot, small busy work isnt bad it builds the game even if the results arnt clearly visible. Making a useless item useful and not having it affect the games meta brings creative alternatives to a very bare bones straight forward strategy.
Ash gets a lot of the credit, but Kieran clearly is one of the primary visionaries that's made the game great over the last 8 years or so since he joined. Leave it in his hands and you know it's going to be a banger
This podcast might seem simple but it is honestly one of my favourite things you guys have done in YEARS. It reminds me so much of the old Q&A streams, which have become a thing of the past now, but allowed a lot of this sort of "free off-the-head" speaking. And its SO INTERESTING and really helps show the passion and humanity of the devs.
Crazy to think that the Theater of Blood was designed in a pub around the corner. Still the best raid and my favorite content to this day. We need more content like that!
The 3 layers of game design part (17:39 ) was extremely insightful! This is why we are in the golden age of osrs - it's the type of thoughtful game design that more developers need to utilize. This game appeals to so many different types of playstyles, but few players feel left behind because of the balance.
so happy for kieran, i remember him all the way back from the runeshark collabs! him and mod ash have done so much for the game, huge props and much love
At 32:04 Mod Kieren mentions that it would feel bad if an item that originated from skilling was better than Barrows. The reason that this would feel bad is because of the time commitment (quests, combat, items, etc.) to do Barrows effectively. When you get the unique, it feels good because it's rewarding you for that time you've put in. That's what skilling needs. Give skilling a cycle where there is a rare chance of a resource that can be crafted/smithed into something that's equivalent to midgame/late game. Maybe the xp/hr is bad (doing barrows does not reward significant combat xp), but you have a chance to make some money/progress your account in some significant way.
Exactly. Why not have new skilling bosses that require new smithing items? A special hunting weapon or whaling harpoon for example. Skilling needs to be given a gear investment to make it have the profit viability of Pvm.
This is a good way, another good way would be to use barrows items in the crafting process. Making the achievement of getting them still valid but also making skilling important.
@@nr7975 any other suggestion from you then, or do you just vote smithing stagnates as a useless skill as late game armour gets better and better than rune?
I know I've heard many times from the Jmods that not everything needs to be relevant or viable but especially when they were talking about hunter rumours I really do appreciate when they strive to bring more purpose to a large variety of content. A good balance of not having something like old hunter where it's just a means to an end feels very important to me.
i have seriously never felt more love in my heart for a group of developers than the old school team i genuinely think you all are fantastic people and am proud to have you run my favorite game
What about smithing would unlock fashionscape armor? Higher smithing could unlock new feature on a bandos chestpiece, new color, more spikes, etc Same for D hide and lots of armor Higher smithing level, more badass you are looking!
OSRS has slowly went down the fashion scape route Does anyone whos been to G.E in RS3 like this? G.E looks like a mess. Also osrs's art style is very weird which makes people "own" their outfit and i think thats how fashionscape is best. Dark souls did something similiar. Weird looking gear and u have to find matches When everything can be every color and every shape, does it all not seem like a smear Thoughts
Lovely to have kieren in this position. He is a gem for this game and knows how to operate it. We are lucky to have this!!! Looking forward to the future!
having just finished my second degree, kieren's words on university were very relatable. this was a great podcast episode. love the osrs team. osrs has gotten me through tough times. thank you.
People don't say this often enough enough, but I love this game so much and all the effort the team has put into it over the years. There are years when ai might take a break, but unlike most MMOs I've never stopped playing out of boredom or spite.
We're really lucky to have Mod Kieren, he's been a player for a very long time and when it comes to new content passing the OSRS vibe check, he absolutely gets it
If the Theater of Blood was designed exclusively at the pub round the corner, Jagex needs to buy the pub round the corner and make it an official Jagex Workspace/Bar
Kieran is such a treasure. To hear his pure and honorable perspective on stewardship of the game is refreshing. This is what will keep me coming back to OSRS, as long as money grabs are kept minimal and the corporate BS doesn't trickle down. Thanks to all the JMods who share this perspective.
Mate, Kieren describes the math studies absolutely correct. Been there and my mental health did not let me finish that. Switched over to computer science. Mad respect for him to push through. Probably the hardest subject one can attend at uni.
I really don't see a problem with being able to smith armor that's stronger than barrows at high smithing levels. Getting 80+ smithing is significantly "harder" or more time consuming or whatever compared to being able to clear barrows. The resources to make the good armor can just be relatively rare. Also getting high levels in skills is supposed to be like a legendary feat or whatever lore wise
Make it to where 80-90 smithing you make something similar to barrows in strength. But you have to mine for example adamant rocks and you have a 1/200 chance of getting a rare material from it. Then you smelt it into barrows ingot then smith into the armor. 91-99 something similar to strength of bandos. You have to mine rune rocks and you have a 1/500 chance for rare mineral. Something like that? But this has a set effect to raise prayer or something.
Also you can raise the mining level required to get the rare material. For example rune is 85 but you can't get the material unless your 95 mining and it's 1/500 chance.
Making smithing viable by adding durability to everything in the game or quality tiers would NOT be a good solution. I think the real way to make smithing meaningful would be to combine smithing with other skills by giving bonuses to those other skills. Smith a special fishing rod that catches fish with faster ticks and also special baubles at specific levels that increases chance to catch fish. This also would require fletching and fishing level. Smith a special pestle and mortar that gives a chance to give additional resources. Higher smithing level gives you access to different rocks which increases this chance. This would also require mining and crafting level. Smith a sharpening stone for your woodcutting Axe to increase your chance to cut logs faster for 20 mins. This would also require mining and crafting Smith special gadgets that help cross agility courses or you apply to the course to activate it. Smith higher quality farming tools which increases success chance, reduces grow time and gives chance to receive extra drops when harvesting. Smith better hunting tools to increase chance to catch or amount caught. Smith better slayer items Smith better fletching knives that increase exp (rune knife, adamant knife etc)
Not sure if these comments get read, but on the topic of untradeable vs tradeable items to make skills worth it: I like the idea of having in-between items that are untradeable, where the best item in progression is tradeable but the second-best upgrade in the ladder is untradeable. This gives people the avenue to choose whether they want to make lots of money or train their skills for an upgrade. This could work like: In between Torva and Bandos is an untradeable set of armor that requires 85 smithing and some significant time investment to get but not as much time investment as making 1B for Torva. Or, in between Barrows and Bandos, there's an untradeable set of armor that requires 70 smithing and takes a chunk of time to create and feels meaningful, but doesn't require 50M for those mid level players who can spend 8M to get smithing up and want to spend that time towards a meaningful upgrade while leveling their smithing at the same time.

Kieran is right up there with Ash for me as such a gem of the OSRS team and Community. He’s brought so many great updates to the game and done so much over the years and is just genuinely such a great dude.
This might be too drastic for the community, but I believe a smithing rework should result (1) The levels needed to smith bronze-rune revised, and (2) the upper levels of smithing being reserved for weapon and armor repairs. Just like how Nex drops broken Torva, perhaps more mob drops should result in a broken variant that requires smithing to repair (e.g. Barrows and Bandos). Torva is end-game and requires 90 smithing to repair. Perfect! Smithing full rune could be lowered to the 60s-70s range, whereas Bandos could be mid 70s-80s. I believe both the broken variant and repairs variant should be tradable. PvMers could sell the broken armor, skillers could fix the armor and sell it for profit, and ironmen still get the satisfaction from doing the whole process by hand. Thoughts?
@blackghostcat good points. I didn't give a comprehensive list, just some examples. Basically, I'd think most unique mob drops would have to be repaired. Filling the missing spectrum
I like this a lot more than the idea of making crafting gear from PvM drops tedious with little to no XP just so it can be profitable. I was honestly surprised to hear him suggesting that, and acknowledging that it would be tedious and people wouldn't want to do it, after all the talk about having each update make the game better. I don't think adding things that people don't want to do is making the game better, pretty much regardless of what the rewards are.
Make new smithing armors past rune that degrade into recylable scrap, so while they might compete with barrows stat wise they might only last an hour, also make them alloys like rune and mithril. Make it so you can use smithing to add a temporary buff to a weapon or armor maybe just the smithable stuff. Maybe master work tools for the other skills, temporary enhancements for axes, pickaxes, farming tools.

Brilliant Podcast - OSRS is unique in its approach to being truly community driven, and it is comforting to know that the game we all love is in the hands of such caring and thoughtful individuals. Keep up the incredible work all
One thing I want to test with private serves, is a smithing rework. I want to make all dragon items and above that are dropped by monsters to be broken when the player receives them and make the player utilize the smithing, crafting, or fletching skills to repair those items. I think it makes sense lore wise in the sense that it would likely be damaged in combat prior to the monster dropping the item. This would incentivize players to train for a specific level to repair the weapon and armor drops. I'd follow a similar rework to RS3 in the sense that lvl 1-10 are for making bronze items, 50-60 are for making rune items, 60-70 for repairing dragon items. this gives lvls 70-99 a spot to repair mid to high lvl items for example Zombie axe, elder maul, GWD armor and weapons.
I always assumed Kieren was more than just a developer but having confirmation that he’s a team lead is GREAT all the content he comes out with is amazing and he’s always so clear when explaining the thought process of the team. Osrs is in great hands
13:09 the only thing that could really ruin OSRS is the people behind it. If the game shifts towards MTX, as an example, then I think many players would leave, or would move to private servers. It’s important to have policies in place to prevent that, but realistically even those can’t last forever. Jagex is a single entity that can’t realistically maintain the checks and balances needed to prevent someone ruining the game at some point. The whole idea of polling was meant to introduce that check on Jagex, but we’re already seeing lots of “integrity changes” making their way into the game unpolled, many polled changes not being implemented as pitched, and the polling threshold being dropped to take away power from “no” voters.
Continuing to listen to the podcast, Kieren touches on this. But I still maintain the position that Jagex has already started to have some level of hubris that is degrading the polling check. The devs today are great, but they won’t be around forever. Checks and balances are there to guide the organization, both in the present and the future. You can’t rely on every dev knowing perfectly what should go into the game.
You dont know youre in the good times until they are gone. I dont think objectively or subjectively this game is at its peak (its past that for good imo) but as a player i am, with room for more growth , and im taking it in stride gg
I get mod ash vibes from mod kieren, genuine love of the game, genuine care for the community, can't be understated how lucky we are to have people like him keeping this game alive and better than ever
I’ve got a few very rough ideas/suggestions of mine for Smithing, but here they go: 1: You know how in Tourist Trap, you recieve blueprints to create the Iron Darts, and you must make multiple attempts at succeding in making said darts? What if blueprints were the untradeable item, that you could get from some other means. Maybe bosses, mini-games, quests, ect;? Then you would need to go through the process of making multiple attempts at creating the item in the blueprint to unlock it. Maybe blueprints could allow you to better create current gears/ammunition in higher quantities? Or possibly at lower smithing levels to reduce the requirement level once youve mastered said item in the blueprint. 2: Maybe a way to create your own forge at your house so you can utilize your butler to get smithing materials for you? (Armor workstand type stuff) 3: A way to integrate a type of forge, to the likes of the one in the Elemental Workshop Quest Line, could put more ways to utilize Smithing, while making it more difficult.
This podcast was awesome! thanks for taking the time to do it :) Getting insight into the thought process of why content exists the way it does is always really cool. I liked the 3 levers philosophy bit the most. On the topic of skilling for money I have a small idea about using systems that already exist to do this. My idea is that there should be skilling bosses that require a much higher level (85+ ish) that drop non tradables which are fragments of a whole item which can only be combined with a high level of the skill required to do the activity, with the finished product being tradable. An example might be a second tempoross lobby with a much higher fishing level requirement that offers no xp but gives you a like 1/80 chance to pop one third of a new ranged weapon into your inventory (the hookblaster5000 ofc)
Huge supporter of this kind of content. Great second-monitor fodder while I'm doing Prayer-Slayer. Seeing the J-Mods being transparent and frank, not just spewing corporate talking points, not afraid to point out the shortcomings of their product but always mulling over how to make it better. That openness and honesty is so validating to many players who love OSRS in spite of its faults.
Genuinely fantastic to see this level of open communication. Always love when the devs have open channels to talk with the community, but also love seeing devs speak with other devs
Same brother. I loved Eve Online and Albion because the entire economy meta game was a whole game unto itself, so with a bit of naivety, ingenuity and timing the market, so to speak, you could make boatloads of money. Also opens a lot of logistic avenues in those games such as being a trader or a merchant buying low, transporting goods and selling them high elsewhere. Of course OSRS is different, but player-driven economies in MMOs can be extremely fun and avenues for emerging gameplay.
I really love to hear the behind the scenes nerdy bits of the game development process. I feel like bring the players into that a bit more may alleviate some* miscommunications within the processes and planning. That and to hear the passion from them that they have invested into the game, it's golden.
33:10 Talking about smithing and how it feels bad to make smithing give something equivalent to barrows. Why not make a big minigame or even completely new dungeon dwell type of mode where you basically go and inside with your smithing you can buff your existing gear. Kinda like warding but because it's inside this mode it doesn't screw the item balance and economy. I think this type of stuff is worth considering. I do not mean this new game would be like raids. It would need to feel different. Another idea worth considering I think is ''mercenary''. I think RS3 has something like this? Basically you'd be able to hire NPC and send it on affairs and whatnot. The success of their trip could be boosted with your smithing as in giving them better gear tailored just for them and this content. This is pretty mobile game like but I don't think it's bad if done well. These 2 are just simple ideas on how you could maybe make the smithing feel worth it and not have it impact the entire game.
i think so much of the community takes for granted the team we have and how much they genuinely have our best interest as players in mind. it's actually wild how they've managed to bring the game to a point where i feel like i fully trust in their judgement. Recent updates have been so well-balanced and high quality in general. this is the new golden era of runescape
Outside of giving gold, one thing skilling can help with is removing gold sinks to allow players to spend less and therefore still see their gold piles increase. To use Smithing as the example, I know 99 gets you 50% reduced costs on repairing Barrows/Moons gear at an armor stand, but if my Smithing could remove the gold cost then I haven’t earned any gold but I’ve saved even more of what would be spent on repairs. Maybe directions like that could make skilling feel more rewarding. Also things like the new Zombie gear make smithing feel useful. Although I definitely still hear the argument that Smithing being 99% Gold bars for every account and Foundry if you’re feeling bored isn’t a very deep or interesting skill.
My guy you answer to smithing is simple. You don’t need to make armor better than barrows. You need to add drops that you can use to upgrade barrows armor through smithing
They did kind of cover that. As they described it, that would solve the 'easy' part of just having stuff to do at higher levels after pushing rune down, but it wouldn't change the fact that smithing wouldn't add value and thus still be pointless for mains who buy things at the GE (as is the case now with godsword shards and DFS).
Mod Kieren's understanding of the game is just amazing. I am looking forward to the future updates. I liked how he mentioned, game should be true to the 2007 time.
Rework smithing in the following way: Make rune platebody doable with 80 smithing, and past that point, it stops being a skill for making armor, but instead it is related to other skills. Such as sailing. 80-99 smithing could be beneficial for smithing powerful parts for your ship, port, etc.
But this has a set effect to raise prayer or something?
30:44 I think the way to make skilling profitable is to make higher tier skilling content performance based. Hallowed sepulcher is a perfect example. The better you do an activity thats intense and difficult a skill based the more you are reward. Obviously passive options should exist but I think higher level skilling should have some difficult content that not the whole player base will be equal at.
Seeing Kieran go from the friend of the infamous Runeshark to becoming his own man and a lead developer in OSRS is really cool to see. FairytalesRS is now the giga chad of the game for players. ur the best m8, simons parched
This is such a great episode. I love seeing the passion that Kieren has. It makes me feel like the people who are making decisions in this game actually understand what the players want. Keep these episodes coming!
I've just been getting back into OSRS and having so much fun after a good 5-6 year break, and it's funny seeing Kieren in the position he is now. I remember on the really old podcasts he was the young new guy sitting among the wise oldheads. Awesome stuff! ❤
Kieren, great job and great achievement over the last 9 years. Very deserving and huge well done. Thank you. Ben, Alec, great podcast. Very well put together. 👏
@ i mean fire making and runecrafting are kinda the same i think they should fix the things they’ve already done to try make skills more fun like forestry it could be fun but the rate of events sucks and if you’re not dropping logs you might just miss out on the event cos u went to bank fixing stuff like that seems easier than reworking a skill
Excellent podcast, had no idea i was tuning in for a podcast but i stayed for the whole measure. you really need to put "The OSRS Podcast" in the title in bold 🤘✌
One of my favorite things about the game are the multiple methods of skilling. Like Mod Kieren's 3 lightbulb analogy, if my goal is to get a fishing level, I can: 1: tick manip. at barb fishing for high intensity/xp but no reward 2: afk karams for low intensity/xp but decent reward 3: minnows/sharks for medium intensity but high reward 4: tempoross for medium intensity/xp/reward but something more in depth than just clicking a pool And I'm sure there are even more viable methods depending on my secondary goals. But I enjoy that I can choose how much effort/focus I can put into the game at any given time.
I think the most meaningful description someone gave me of University was that the purpose is to show you're willing to learn and it proves you're teachable.
This is the very final episode of the OSRS Podcast pilots! But don't despair, we're going to bring you more (we're just not sure when). We'd love to hear from you - which J-Mods or Creators would you like to see sit down with Ayiza and Sween on future episodes?

Man, separate from the game, it’s so sick to see Mod Kieren progress professionally from the beginning to now, he seems to genuinely be loving what he’s doing and is able to work on the game in completely new ways! Shout out to him 💯
When he first joined the team and I saw his long, nerdy hair, I knew he was a real gamer
Leave it in his hands and you know it's going to be a banger
i could listen to these three for hours
This podcast might seem simple but it is honestly one of my favourite things you guys have done in YEARS. It reminds me so much of the old Q&A streams, which have become a thing of the past now, but allowed a lot of this sort of "free off-the-head" speaking. And its SO INTERESTING and really helps show the passion and humanity of the devs.
Crazy to think that the Theater of Blood was designed in a pub around the corner. Still the best raid and my favorite content to this day. We need more content like that!
And make the drops x10 harder to get so I can spend my life there too!!

@@kingchongy1712 You, it's people like you who we have to blame! Get back to pet chasing you party-pooper!
Being from newcastle where kieran is from it's amazing to see.
The 3 layers of game design part (17:39 ) was extremely insightful! This is why we are in the golden age of osrs - it's the type of thoughtful game design that more developers need to utilize. This game appeals to so many different types of playstyles, but few players feel left behind because of the balance.
it sounds like solving a problem by creating an other one.
@@tisimo123 And that sounds like life in a nutshell
so happy for kieran, i remember him all the way back from the runeshark collabs! him and mod ash have done so much for the game, huge props and much love
Memes aside, very grateful for our invested and caring Jmods, who, as Kieren put it, care about the community, because they "were the community."
I really like these podcasts. The OSRS team is truly special and I'm happy to be a part of this community. Thanks for all you do 🤘
At 32:04 Mod Kieren mentions that it would feel bad if an item that originated from skilling was better than Barrows.
@@EresirThe1st Then you're literally just introducing pvm to skilling, defeating the entire purpose in the first place
@@nr7975 any other suggestion from you then, or do you just vote smithing stagnates as a useless skill as late game armour gets better and better than rune?
@@EresirThe1st Whaling could be an interesting addition to sailing.
Im so glad Kieren is still with the team. Has been so invovled in this game before OG nex release i was watching him with RuneShark.
Higher smithing could unlock new feature on a bandos chestpiece, new color, more spikes, etc
Same for D hide and lots of armor
Higher smithing level, more badass you are looking!
OSRS has slowly went down the fashion scape route
Does anyone whos been to G.E in RS3 like this?
G.E looks like a mess.
Also osrs's art style is very weird which makes people "own" their outfit and i think thats how fashionscape is best.
Dark souls did something similiar. Weird looking gear and u have to find matches
When everything can be every color and every shape, does it all not seem like a smear

There has been no effort, except for the forced DEI / ESG updates.
this podcast gives me hope for the future of old school runescape. we’re in good hands for now
I loved mod Kieran back in his TH-cam days still so glad he has stuck close and worked on the game for so long :D
We're really lucky to have Mod Kieren, he's been a player for a very long time and when it comes to new content passing the OSRS vibe check, he absolutely gets it
the golden days of RuneScape are upon us!
You missed the "golden days" by so many years, kid.
We are so lucky to have this team. Kieren fully understands the game and community. Thankful the higher ups allow these unfiltered discussions.
If the Theater of Blood was designed exclusively at the pub round the corner, Jagex needs to buy the pub round the corner and make it an official Jagex Workspace/Bar
I would pay good money for an IRL Wizard's Mind Bomb, Asgarnian Ale, or a Dwarven Stout!
11:00 RUNESHARK!!!!! James and Simon!!! I was hoping he'd mention them! :D
They died???
Mate, Kieren describes the math studies absolutely correct. Been there and my mental health did not let me finish that. Switched over to computer science. Mad respect for him to push through. Probably the hardest subject one can attend at uni.
This game is successful because you have people who actually love the game making it. A lot of mods were players before being hired.
From watching Kieran with Runeshark back in 2011 to seeing how much he's grown and given to osrs is truly amazing!
What a genuine bunch of guys. Pleasure to listen.
This would also require mining and crafting
Smith special gadgets that help cross agility courses or you apply to the course to activate it.
Smith higher quality farming tools which increases success chance, reduces grow time and gives chance to receive extra drops when harvesting.
Smith better hunting tools to increase chance to catch or amount caught.
Smith better slayer items
Smith better fletching knives that increase exp (rune knife, adamant knife etc)
We are so spoiled as players to get such insights in such an unfiltered fashion. I love the dev team so much
Not sure if these comments get read, but on the topic of untradeable vs tradeable items to make skills worth it:
I like the idea of having in-between items that are untradeable, where the best item in progression is tradeable but the second-best upgrade in the ladder is untradeable.
Very clever idea, love this. Bump!
Make it to where 80-90 smithing you make something similar to barrows in strength. But you have to mine for example adamant rocks and you have a 1/200 chance of getting a rare material from it. Kieran is right up there with Ash for me as such a gem of the OSRS team and Community. He’s brought so many great updates to the game and done so much over the years and is just genuinely such a great dude.
Kieren is my damn hero. Keep doing all the great stuff you're doing!
Listening to Kieran talk so intelligently about nurturing the state of the game is so reassuring
Thoughts?
Seems legit, but any reason you left out granite and dragon? Rune to bandos is quite a jump
@@PaperThomas I think it would be good yeah
I been 99 smithing for years, just man up.
Kiren is my favourite mod and I feel relief he is at the helm driving the direction of the game. His vision is spot on.
I like this idea!
I dont think objectively or subjectively this game is at its peak (its past that for good imo)
but
as a player i am, with room for more growth , and im taking it in stride
gg
What an all round nice guy, Thanks for your time energy and effort Kieren. I appreciate you working on the game I've loved since 2005.
Love this series, keep 'em coming!
I get mod ash vibes from mod kieren, genuine love of the game, genuine care for the community, can't be understated how lucky we are to have people like him keeping this game alive and better than ever
I’ve got a few very rough ideas/suggestions of mine for Smithing, but here they go:
1: You know how in Tourist Trap, you recieve blueprints to create the Iron Darts, and you must make multiple attempts at succeding in making said darts?
What if blueprints were the untradeable item, that you could get from some other means. Maybe bosses, mini-games, quests, ect;?
Then you would need to go through the process of making multiple attempts at creating the item in the blueprint to unlock it.
Maybe blueprints could allow you to better create current gears/ammunition in higher quantities? Or possibly at lower smithing levels to reduce the requirement level once youve mastered said item in the blueprint.
2: Maybe a way to create your own forge at your house so you can utilize your butler to get smithing materials for you? (Armor workstand type stuff)
3: A way to integrate a type of forge, to the likes of the one in the Elemental Workshop Quest Line, could put more ways to utilize Smithing, while making it more difficult.
Watching Kieren go from Playing Minecraft shouting PenisBomb to where is now is amazing, much love my guy!
this better be enough views to keep the series going. I need weekly episodes
Man I love Kieren. Feels like just yesterday I was watching him play Minecraft with Runeshark.
The title got my interest peaked
piqued
Genuinely fantastic to see this level of open communication. Always love when the devs have open channels to talk with the community, but also love seeing devs speak with other devs
"I am a cog in a machine of a player-run economy" I want that!!!! That's exactly what the game needs!!
Of course OSRS is different, but player-driven economies in MMOs can be extremely fun and avenues for emerging gameplay.
that isn't runescape though
@Torbarian y not
@@car-keys Because for things to have a pure player run economy we would need to rebalance everything.
I really love to hear the behind the scenes nerdy bits of the game development process. I feel like bring the players into that a bit more may alleviate some* miscommunications within the processes and planning.
That and to hear the passion from them that they have invested into the game, it's golden.
i can't believe the angel Mod Ayiza swears!
We are so lucky to have devs like Kieren who clearly care a lot about the longterm health of the game.
We need more goldsinks bro the economy is wild
I'm glad we have someone like Kieren as the design director. He really understands OSRS.
41:10
Mod Kieren's understanding of the game is just amazing. I am looking forward to the future updates. I liked how he mentioned, game should be true to the 2007 time.
Rework smithing in the following way: Make rune platebody doable with 80 smithing, and past that point, it stops being a skill for making armor, but instead it is related to other skills. Such as sailing. 80-99 smithing could be beneficial for smithing powerful parts for your ship, port, etc.
But this has a set effect to raise prayer or something?
Love hearing Kieren talk, he's such an articulate speaker c:
30:44 I think the way to make skilling profitable is to make higher tier skilling content performance based. Hallowed sepulcher is a perfect example. The better you do an activity thats intense and difficult a skill based the more you are reward. Obviously passive options should exist but I think higher level skilling should have some difficult content that not the whole player base will be equal at.
Seeing Kieran go from the friend of the infamous Runeshark to becoming his own man and a lead developer in OSRS is really cool to see. FairytalesRS is now the giga chad of the game for players. ur the best m8, simons parched

I've just been getting back into OSRS and having so much fun after a good 5-6 year break, and it's funny seeing Kieren in the position he is now. I remember on the really old podcasts he was the young new guy sitting among the wise oldheads. Awesome stuff! ❤
Daaamn smithing rework would be awesome. It's been outdated since like 2005 😂
Kieren, great job and great achievement over the last 9 years. Very deserving and huge well done. Thank you.
Ben, Alec, great podcast. Very well put together. 👏
what’s wrong with smithing just go giants foundry
I think having only one enjoyable method for training a skill is pretty telling
@ i mean fire making and runecrafting are kinda the same i think they should fix the things they’ve already done to try make skills more fun like forestry it could be fun but the rate of events sucks and if you’re not dropping logs you might just miss out on the event cos u went to bank fixing stuff like that seems easier than reworking a skill
Great podcast, love hearing behind the scenes and personal journeys within Jagex with J Mods we care about deeply.
Was really awesome to listen to. I'm so happy to hear someone so passionate about the game, being in such a crucial spot in the company!
It was really great learning about Kieren's role within the team and about his mathematical past, keep these coming!
I know Kieren from those old RuneShark videos. So so cool to see him in a high up position now, glad he's done well for himself.
Excellent podcast, had no idea i was tuning in for a podcast but i stayed for the whole measure. you really need to put "The OSRS Podcast" in the title in bold 🤘✌
One of my favorite things about the game are the multiple methods of skilling. Like Mod Kieren's 3 lightbulb analogy, if my goal is to get a fishing level, I can:
1: tick manip. at barb fishing for high intensity/xp but no reward
2: afk karams for low intensity/xp but decent reward
3: minnows/sharks for medium intensity but high reward
4: tempoross for medium intensity/xp/reward but something more in depth than just clicking a pool
And I'm sure there are even more viable methods depending on my secondary goals. But I enjoy that I can choose how much effort/focus I can put into the game at any given time.
really enjoyed the unfiltered vibe from this podcast and an interesting listen, amazing job, guys!
I think the most meaningful description someone gave me of University was that the purpose is to show you're willing to learn and it proves you're teachable.
12:30 is so nice to hear. You can hear the emotion in kierans voice as he’s talking about the game he loves
Looks like I picked the perfect time to start playing OSRS again😎
