    F1 visa students currently on a Post-Completion OPT with degrees in a STEM field (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) may be eligible for an extension of 24 months after the completion of their 12 months of Post-Completion OPT.
    Is your STEM OPT extension taking too long to be adjudicated by USCIS? If so learn the best tips to speed up the processing of your STEM OPT application in this video: • BEST Tips to Speed Up ...
    Eligibility for STEM OPT Extension Application
    To be eligible for the STEM OPT Extension an F-1 student must satisfy all of the following:
    1. You must be engaged in Post-Completion OPT to apply for the STEM OPT extension
    2. You must have a earned a degree (bachelors, masters, or PhD) in a STEM field within the last 10 years
    3. You must have a PAID job offer with a company that is registered in the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's E-verify system
    4. You must apply for an extension of your work authorization before the completion of your Post-Completion OPT
    5. You must not have accrued more than 90 days of unemployment while on OPT
    Limitation of STEM OPT Extension
    1. Unlike the Post-Completion OPT, STEM OPT does not allow an F-1 student to be self employed
    2. Similar to the Post-Completion OPT, F-1 students must work for a minimum of 20 hours per week and could work for multiple employers
    3. While on STEM OPT an F-1 student must not exceed a total of 150 days of unemployment. This includes any unemployment days accrued during the first 12 months of Post-Completion OPT
    4. All forms of employment during the STEM OPT extension must be paid
    Applying for STEM OPT Extension
    Applying for STEM OPT is similar to that of the initial Post-Completion OPT in that you will be requesting work authorization from USCIS. However, with STEM OPT, an F-1 student must submit a request for STEM extension to USCIS before the expiration date of the OPT EAD card. If your request for STEM extension is not received in a timely manner, USCIS may deny your application for extension.
    While the application for STEM OPT extension is being processed by USCIS , F1 visa students can continue working on their expired EAD card for a maximum of 180 days from the date of expiration.

    Thanks so much for the video! I have a question about the last page, you said the evaluations did not need to be submitted. Do they need to be sent in at some point? What is the purpose of this document if it’s not a part of the application packet?

      Hi Rhea! Yes, you will be completing and sending the evaluations to your DSO at the end of month 12 and month 24 of the 2 year STEM OPT extension. Correct, it's not part of the application packet to be sent to USCIS. However it's an official record your DSO needs to review to ensure that your employment is compliant with the terms of your STEM program. I hope this helps.

    I have an OPT (which will expire July 6th) after graduating in 2020 - AAPSY (Associate in Psychology). I know that Psychology is on the list of the CIP code (42.2707). However, as my course is an undergraduate course, do you think I could file for an extension taking into consideration that due to COVID I have a huge argument to do so?

    Hello, thank you for sharing this informative video. I have a question, after applying for an opt stem extension, if you receive a job offer from another organization. What do we do? When your application is still pending? Should I wait for the extension and tell the new employer that I have applied for extension and I'm waiting for it. Or should I reapply for I 765 and I 983 with the new employer?

    Thanks for making the great content. I have a unique case regarding POST OPT, I applied for POST OPT last year on April 24th, 2022 (graduated in May 2022) however, USCIS took so long to approve my case and sent EAD card this year on May 08, 2023 (after a year) which expires in Jue 19th, 2023 (about 3 months). Since my POST-OPT EAD card is expiring in 3 months, should I apply for a STEM extension ( I got a master's in CS) or write a letter to USCIS describing the error they made and request to issue a new POST-OPT card to make up the lost 9 months). My concern is that If have to mail back the original post-opt card and supporting documents to USCIS, what if it takes longer than 3 months before my post-opt will expire, will I be out of status? Can I still apply for the extension? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks.

    Thanks for making this video! If the job does not require a bachelor's degree, does it still qualify for Stem extension? I graduated with a B.S in Biology and i'm currently employed on OPT as a dental assistant. My authorization expires end of June and I would like to apply for the STEM extension. Even though it does not require a bachelor's degree, I chose dental assisting because I am applying to dental school and this experience will strengthen my application. I will start applying this cycle, which opens up in June, but that is also when my EAD authorization expires. I am wondering if I would still be eligible for the STEM extension working as a dental assistant?

    • @SojourningScholar
      @SojourningScholar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      I'm glad to be of service. As long as you can show on the I-983 that the job is directly related to your major, the STEM extension can be used. It does not matter the degree requirements of the job.

    • @SojourningScholar

      The STEM is an extension of Post completion OPT. So you need to be on OPT at the time you apply for it. And you only get 1 year of OPT at each each degree level.

    Hi! Thank you for making this video. If I apply for STEM extensionl less than 30 days before my initial OPT expires, can there a consequence of that? In terms on not getting approved on time?

    • @SojourningScholar
      @SojourningScholar  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      The most important thing is that your STEM OPT application must be received by USCIS before your current OPT expires. With a less than 30 day timeline, you would have to work quickly to get your Form I-983 training plan completed by you and your employer and then reviewed and approved by your DSO. As well as consider shipping time for your STEM OPT I-20 to get to you (if you're currently residing in a different city or state from your university campus) and shipping time for the STEM OPT application to get to USCIS.
      Best of Luck!
