LYRICS
I have a heart full of questions
Quieting all my suggestions
What is the meaning of Christian
In this American life
I’m feeling awfully foolish
Spending my life on a message
I look around and I wonder
Ever if I heard it right
Coming to you ‘cause I’m confused
Coming to you ‘cause I feel used
Coming to weep while I’m waiting
Tell me you won’t make me go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
Where we arrive as immigrants
And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
You were alone and rejected
Misunderstood and detested
You gave it all, didn’t hold back
You even gave up your life
How can we call ourselves Christians
Saying that love is a tension
Between the call of the cross and
Between the old party line
Coming to you for the mothers
Who are all running for cover
There is a flood from their weeping
Tell me you won’t make them go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
Where we arrive as immigrants
And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
There is a man with a family
He has a wife and a baby
He broke the law just to save them
Working for three bucks an hour
Truly you said we were equal
Everyone’s heart is deceitful
Everyone born is illegal
When love is the law of the land
Coming to you for the hungry
Eating the scraps of this country
Didn’t you swear you would feed them
Tell me you won’t make them go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
Where we arrive as immigrants
And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
There is a wolf who is ranting
All of the sheep they are clapping
Promising power and protection
Claiming the Christ who was killed
Killed by a common consensus
Everyone screaming “Barabbas”
Trading their God for a hero
Forfeiting Heaven for Rome
Coming to you ‘cause I’m angry
Coming to you ‘cause I’m guilty
Coming to you ‘cause you’ve promised
To leave the flock for the one
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
Where we arrive as immigrants
You call us citizens
And welcome us as children home
Is there a way to love always?
Living in enemy hallways
Don’t know my foes from my friends and
Don’t know my friends anymore
Power has several prizes
Handcuffs can come in all sizes
Love has a million disguises
But winning is simply not one
Love has a million disguises
But winning is simply not one
This may be the most powerful song I've ever heard. Beautiful and heart-breaking and convicting and edifying.
This is why we need artists.
I’m not crying. You’re crying... holy moly this is soo good
We’re all crying
10 months after this comment was posted and I’m still crying
@@thomasowens5049 yuuuup!
a contemporary psalm I'd say. Thank you for such an experience of music.
So much going on here theologically but from a simple place in the heart. This is one way of describing all of your music. Great, great song. Vocals are great as per usual and the fingerpicking is fantastic. Simple, poignant, spiritual, and real. You are one of my favorites and i will echo other sentiments here in that you inspire me to play, sing, and write. Keep using and sharing your gifts...you are making a difference for the Kingdom here and in the next life. God bless you Jon!
Oh my. This is so beautiful and needed. The cry that so many of us have....that is hard to find in music. Also, in the best compliment I can give, this is in the realm of Damien Rice's "O" album.
A friend shared this with me today and I had to pull over to process it. I played it all day long and shared it multiple times. Prophetic. Timely. Lament. Thank you.
Thank you for finding the words to express what I feel but didn't know how to say myself.
Felt a bit of the poison burn off from this. Thank you, thank you.
This may be my favorite song ever written by any artist. The combination of powerful message and musical and poetic artistry are 2nd to none. Thank you Jon Guerra!
Each time I listen I am more impressed. Today I was trying to play djembe along with him, but was finding it super difficult... until I realized I was playing in 5/4 time (or 15/8?)... seriously crazy!
Lord, in your mercy, hear our prayer.
Who found this after hearing it at the end of the rise and fall of Mars hill podcast?
Jon, this is powerful. You've put words to how so many of us American Christians are feeling. It is honest & articulate. Thank you.
“Don’t know my foes from my friends and don’t know my friends anymore” hits so hard. This whole song puts into words all the feelings that I have had this last few years. So good. Glad I found your channel with so many gems on here. Will be buying album too
That jumped out at me like crazy. So many relationships have changed over the last 6 years and people that I used to live in deep community with are now people I haven't spoken with in nearly 2 years.
WOW. Spiritually alive poetry.
A Contemporary Psalm
Damn, Jon.. so good. Thank you for advocating for the weak. You brought your prayers, heavy and whole, to the throne. They are heard and honored there.
So glad you connect!
The message of this song reminds me a lot of "Land of my Sojourn" by Rich Mullins. Convicting.
I love Rich Mullins!! That is a beautiful song
That last line. Wow.
Just. Chills.
Beautiful. "Everyone born is Illegal when Love is the law of the land"
Thank you for such an amazing song for our current time.
This is the one line that confused me, what does it mean? If love is the law why would everyone born be illegal?
@@Raquel930 My understanding is that we can't truly love without Christ. In that we are all law breakers until salvation. That's at least what I got from it..
This is stunning. Thank you Jon for this incredibly honest, deeply faithful songwriting, and commentary and theology through music. Simply powerful. I will be bringing this song to our church worship team. Thank you thank you.
Elisha said get me a musician so that I might prophesy...
You so poetically, poignantly and beautifully put the aching of my heart over the church in America into song. Thank you for sharing this.
I’m still crying. Thank you for using your voice and gifts to make bread for Christ followers and putting music to the true gospel. Love your work, especially this song and Kingdom of God!
God is working through you. It is as if you've peered into my soul and turned every thought and frustration into a song that is so overwhelmingly beautiful, I don't know how to process it except to weep. Thank you.
Beautiful and powerful
So powerful. So so powerful. Thank you for giving voice to what is in my heart and making me cry.
OMG!I stumbled on this song and it is so ooo good, soul searching & very timely. Made me cry!Bless you Jon!!
God gave you such a gift 🙏🏾💕
this is a whole word.
Wow!!! This is so poetic and profound!!!
Oh bless you. This is glorious, raw, vulnerable, needed. As you sing and reach, my heart joins you. Thank you for this.
Brings tears to my eyes every time. Thank you.
I am moved. Heard this on a podcast last week . looked it up and listened again. I have read the lyrics. I am moved by the honest profundity and complexity. I am totally sympathetic to your language, even though I am not a believer in god anymore.
Thank you. Thank you.
Thank you for the truth telling and the hope in this song.
Full ugly cry, but totally worth it. What a powerful and beautiful message. My heart is both broken and filled simultaneously.
This is achingly beautiful. Lord have mercy.
Beautiful, God-honoring work. Thank you.
Sent by a friend, sooo comforting to hear these words, thank you😪
Wow. Such a powerful song.
This is such a gift. Thank you for writing it and bearing witness to the tension, confusion, and anger that has typified the lives of so many Christians, current and former.
You are blessed and you are a blessing! Thank you for this song. It echoes in my heart.
Well done, Jon. Hadn’t heard anything from you in years but this writing bears some serious, thoughtful reflection that probably was churned out over an extended period of time.
Thank you for such a great song. Since you left Bwindi-Uganda, I have been waiting for something new from you. Glad to have known you from Jamison Daniel.
What a sweet time that was! Thanks for following along. I'm so glad you enjoy the song. God bless you in your ministry and service at Bwindi. Hope to see you there again sometime.
Great stuff Jon! look forward to hearing more of your songs! Keep em coming!
9.9k views. Sad considering this is a masterpiece.
I felt that 😪
Thank you for writing, singing, and sharing this song. So good!
So glad for this new album. Listened and benefitted from your first album for so long. No surprise that the tracks on this album match the crazy high expectationS I had. Appreciate you!

My soundtrack for the past few months has actually just been this on repeat. Incredible and timely. Thank you!! Where can I find some sheet music or a piano arrangement?
Wow! This is amazing.
God bless you 🙃
Turns out you have a nice lower register. I hear a little Damien Rice in it. This is a special song.
Looking for sermon ..waiting on God

👏🏼👏🏼👏🏼
Question: how do you sing this without crying lol
You can tell he's holding back tears, especially at the end.
You're asking questions the late Rich Mullins did. He'd be proud
