    LYRICS | CITIZENS
I have a heart full of questions
    Quieting all my suggestions
What is the meaning of Christian
    In this American life?
    I’m feeling awfully foolish
Spending my life on a message
I look around and I wonder
Ever if I heard it right
Coming to you ‘cause I’m confused
Coming to you ‘cause I feel used
Coming to weep while I’m waiting
Tell me you won’t make me go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
    Where we arrive as immigrants
    And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
    You were alone and rejected
    Misunderstood and detested
You gave it all, didn’t hold back
You even gave up your life
How can we call ourselves Christians
Saying that love is a tension
Between the call of the cross and
    Between the old party line
Coming to you for the mothers
Who are all running for cover
There is a flood from their weeping
Tell me you won’t make them go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
    Where we arrive as immigrants
    And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
There is a man with a family
He has a wife and a baby
He broke the law just to save them
Working for three bucks an hour
Truly you said we were equal
    Everyone’s heart is deceitful
    Everyone born is illegal
When love is the law of the land
Coming to you for the hungry
Eating the scraps of this country
Didn’t you swear you would feed them
Tell me you won’t make them go
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
    Where we arrive as immigrants
    And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
There is a wolf who is ranting
All of the sheep they are clapping
    Promising power and protection
Claiming the Christ who was killed
    Killed by a common consensus
    Everyone screaming “Barabbas”
Trading their God for a hero
    Forfeiting Heaven for Rome
Coming to you ‘cause I’m angry
Coming to you ‘cause I’m guilty
Coming to you ‘cause you’ve promised
To leave the flock for the one
I need to know there is justice
That it will roll in abundance
And that you’re building a city
    Where we arrive as immigrants
    And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
    Where we arrive as immigrants
    And you call us citizens
And you welcome us as children home
Is there a way to love always?
    Living in enemy hallways
Don’t know my foes from my friends and
    Don’t know my friends anymore
    Power has several prizes
Handcuffs can come in all sizes
    Love has a million disguises
But winning is simply not one

I have to confess I've been having a hard time knowing how to pray-except to cry out whenever I hear the latest news,"LORD make things right!!!"
But THIS! It felt like the words I would have prayed if I had any idea how to put what's in my heart into words! The pain and anger, confusion and fear, heartache and longing. "Lord, make things right!"
    Thank you for this!!

I’m a singer songwriter who is a Christian, yet I find it hard to listen or sing to contemporary Christian labeled music. It mostly seems sappy and fake. But this? It’s raw. It’s real. Well done!

Please don’t be so piously self-righteous Erin. You can go ahead and harshly judge all CCMusic as “mostly sappy and fake”, as long as you make clear that you’re only voicing your personal opinion, which you don’t. You call yourself a Christian, which everybody and their brother can do, but if your definition of being a Christian is that everyone that doesn’t think and feel like you do is “mostly sappy and fake”, then it’s you that has a problem with God by confining him to a small box of your own design. You don’t know me, but I probably agree with you more than I disagree with you. But you’re sending out conflicting and church body divisive signals here, and that’s not good.

I stumbled on this listening to the Podcast of “Rise and Fall of Mars Hill”… never really go to search tunes but this I had to. I’m glad I did. Such a great performance… this one in particular is heartfelt. The lyrics are deep and the playing is so great. Great job man. I’m inspired to see believers creating great art. Keep going man! 👏🏿👏🏿👏🏿🔥🔥🔥

I want to thank you for this beautiful song. I've been listening to it on repeat for nearly two weeks now. It speaks so powerfully to the experience of being a Christ follower in America right now: the moments of anger, soul-weariness, and doubt ("coming to you cause I'm angry / coming to you cause I'm guilty"); the longing for God's justice to intervene ("didn't you swear you would feed them / tell me you won't make them go"); the weight of seeing how badly we've collectively failed to love people ("coming to you for the mothers / who are all running for cover / there is a flood from their weeping").
But, while the song doesn't dilute or downplay those realities, it also continually points towards our ultimate hope in God's faithful love ("you're building a city / where we arrive as immigrants / and you call us citizens / and you welcome us as children home"). I think you struck that balance so well: sitting with difficult truth but not giving into despair. Thank you for articulating this experience.

Wow - I have been listening to this on repeat since hearing it for the first time last week and your comment put some of what I believe strikes so deep a cord in this song with me to words.

Why can't all Christian music be more like this: Not messages we digest like pablum, but music that is beautiful, hopeful, and somewhat uncomfortable.

  • @danielsellers4958

Unlike all the other "trending" Christian songs on this topic, this is the first I've heard that points directly to Christ and to His kingdom as the only solution, instead of wallowing in white guilt or political solutions. Lately, I can't stand listening to Christian bands all putting in their 2 cents on this topic, but this... this is raw God-glorifying perfection.

    • @kieranmaclean4395
      @kieranmaclean4395 ปีที่แล้ว

Amen. much of the Christian church today is looking for a “hero” (Barabbas - Politicians) rather than looking TO the already victorious saviour. they’ve put far too much faith in this world, instead of looking up, where Christ is seated!
