What is Radioactive Decay? Half Life | Decay Constant | Activity (+ Problems Solving)

  • เผยแพร่เมื่อ 27 มิ.ย. 2024
  • The Law of Radioactive Decay tells us how the number of a radioactive sample changes with time. Usually it is an exponential decay process.
Even though the different radioactive processes like alpha decay, beta decay or gamma decay are different from each other in terms of the particles emitted etc, they all share the same kind of decay law.
Half Life is defined as the time period in which the initial number of radioactive samples reaches half its original value.
Decay constant and half life are inversely proportional to each other. These quantities are a characteristic of the radioactive sample present, and is independent of the physical parameters like pressure, temperature, density etc.
Mean life is the average lifespan of all radioactive samples present.
Activity is the rate of radioactive decay, or the number of disintegrations happening per unit time. Activity also decreases exponentially with time.
We can use the conclusions derived from the decay law and other parameters to solve different problems of radioactive decay.
