- Journalist and author Paola Ramos sits down with Michael Kosta to discuss her new book “Defectors: The Rise of the Latino Far Right and What it Means for America.” Following the vice-presidential debate between JD Vance and Tim Walz, they discuss why Trump’s messaging is resonating with Latino voters, Vance’s dehumanizing comments about immigrant families, the impact of cultural forces like race, colorism, and colonialism, and what Democrats can do to reach out to more Latino voters. #DailyShow #PaolaRamos #Latino

Same way Mark Robinson thinks having slavery again wouldn't effect him... people can be extremely delusional.
Mmmmm idk that’s certainly on a whole ‘nother level
Slavery in the States meant legally Mark Robinson would have not been a human being. Legally.
This situation, it’s true, would affect/does affect all Latino people but there’s no comparison to chattel slavery.
Bingo!
@@OscarLangleySoryu I would say that parallels can be drawn here
@@HuskyOwner-bl1jf yeah but that’s like saying there are parallels between someone who attends church on holidays and a violent extremist lol
@@OscarLangleySoryu
The OP did not compare deportation to slavery. They compared the denial of those who'd be affected.
This is an issue I see with other people too. I'll never understand how members of my own family who literally are immigrants can turn and say that they hate immigrants and whatever. Like... ma'am, you weren't born here. How do you forget that?
now im a long line of Dane in Denmark, but some immigrants think that the hate will go away if we stop getting new immigrants
pulling the ladder up behind them is unfortunately a thing some people do!
@@saint-miscreant Yep, it is the classic. Well I got mine, so you can kick dirt
It always killed me that Latinos were willing to vote for Trump considering how much he talks trash about them.
It's a symptom of media algorithms. The biggest difference today is the sale of news. Reporters no longer report. News is pkged for sale. Algorithms funnel you the sales you like, so you don't get all perspectives.
Hispanics/Latinos aren't a monolith. Their journey to the US are all unique, and most are here legally and Americanized, 3rd 4th generations... and dont identify with 1st gen migrants and their struggles
Latinos are mostly catholics and lean to the authorities.
@@jPuma817 And sometimes it's out of fear & the feeling of self preservation. "If I hate the same people who those with more power hate, then the powerful won't target me."
Happens all over the world as sadly, racism & hatred are traits way too common in humans.
@@mattgibson6144very ‘leopards eating my face party’ 🥲
i wish she wouldve touched more on the racism that exists in the native countries. That racism in the native countries validates the American assimilation for fair skin latinos.
True and don't forget the white privilege people enjoy in the islands and elsewhere in Latin America.
She speaks the inconvenient truth. Brilliant. Enlightening. Trump and Vance play you all. Don’t be fooled. Vote Blue for our democracy and our country 🙏💙🇺🇸
She’s 100% on the mark. Dems need to listen to her.
Love her!! And this is very important information!! Vote blue to save America 🇺🇸 💙❤️🙏💪👍🗳️
Read her book this weekend. As a Latina, I’m always wondering about this topic. Fantastic and enlightening read!
Jorge Tamos is a national treasure. And NOW his DAUGHTER is EVEN GREATER ❤️💙🔥

@@Hellkite-er5pg yeah I have some FAT ASSED THUMBS 👍 😂🤷
Consider this...
Religion must be seen as another significant factor. Latino communities tend to be very religious, and unfortunately, the Republican Party has successfully tied its image to conservative ideals often seen in religion. It’s also crystal clear that the vast majority of pastors promote Trump as the candidate most aligned with their beliefs.
This is so true. I see the Catholic Church as being a big factor in this.
Yet, if you ask me Trump is the least pious person out there
He only worships himself and the all might dollar and in that order
Bingo!!
So delicious to hear people who can effortlessly toss off sentences like "Ground people in that urgency". What a rich language we share when people are ready to explore its possibilities.
She explained her points very well! I will definitely grab her book and read it
"Voting for Trump is like a turkey voting for Thanksgiving", Anthony Davis
I see a Paula Ramos interview, i click. Simple as that. She's a powerhouse!
She's so smart and insightful...
and beautiful too! 🥰
This is very interesting. In Germany, we have a far right party (the ADF) and "people with a migrant background" vote for them, because they are dont see that they are in the same boat as asylum seekers.
Excellent talk. Thank you for this interview.
As a Hispanic in Texas, I don't identify as a Mexican American, I prefer to be called a Tejano, because on both sides of my family have been in Texas for 5 generations. I saw alot of my fellow Tejanos support trump because they are single issue voters, of immigrations. Tejanos don't see themselves as Mexicans, even Mexicans on the other side of the border prefer to call themselves Nortenos is slang for North Mexicans. So we got two groups of historically the same people divided by a river and then living in harmony. Until we had a invasion of central and south Americans, disrespect our cultural homeland. To Tejanos and Nortenos it did feel like an invasion. It divided us and we didn't like how the US media pigeon feed all hispanics together. That is why alot of hispanics voted for trump... Its a very dividing issue and hopefully the majority of clear headed Tejanos can wrangle the loose dudes and bring them home.
When we fight.
We.....
Win! Vote Democrat!
WIN! 🥇
Smart young lady! She is amazing
Some "Latinos" never crossed. Yet, a lot of us have empathy for immigrants.
@@laril4827 nobody said otherwise
This is part of what she was talking about. You're still an immigrant. And this is what this country was founded on
I love how latinos say latinos.
@malteschaper3782
Oh, you mean…correctly?
Or latinas!
@@jeffalobill Yeah, that's probably it.
Yes, have a detailed look at Latin America’s history of colonialism and how that has shaped the lives of Latinos (of different ilks).
It makes no sense. We'll vote for Chump and he'll deport my relatives?
Well when you put it that way, I actually have a couple of relatives I wouldnt mind being away from...
i’m latino and in my experience… it’s complicated. some have a superiority complex. some have generally conservative social views/ are very religious. i’ve met a newly “legal” immigrant that says that will vote trump because of the economy.
right wing propaganda and fear mongering, specifically on crime etc, run rampant in latino social media communities, like whatsapp.
Loved that she said, "color-ism". "Racism" is too confusing and complicated of a word to use in a short sentence.
American exceptionalism is contagious
I hate when my people do this and then hide it behind religious reasons. I have people in my family voting for Trump because how he feels about homosexuals it's dumb. not to mention a lot of immigrants in my family and still it's counterproductive
The idea of Other, comes with racism, comes with narcissism, comes from being affected and near to those sorts of people, the inappropriate drive to be enough, to have approval…as if these aren’t just sick ideas
Vote blue! 💙💙💙
President Obama was the Deporter in Chief. A Democrat. President Trump was also a Deporter in Chief. A Republican. Maybe, just maybe... millions of latinos vote for different reasons on a personal level. Just think of them as individuals instead of a race that owes you support.
Obama followed the law
Ok, my Cubans friends, start putting your home in the market, give up your Social Security, Medicare and Medicaid, take your savings out of the bank and enjoy your trip back to the island that you love, and the Castro's government. Happy days.
I love her❤❤
I look forward to reading this book.
A very well spoken young man. I will be waiting to read his book 😊
she's a woman :) (this is not me being trans or homophobic or anything - she identifies as such and was born as such. and she has a fiancee :))
I wish walz would have gone on offense and called out Vance for their plan to deport and separate American families.
Could you find a spokesperson who will be ignored more by the people who need to hear them?
But if the Latino community wants to portray themselves and differentiate themselves (and truly forget their roots ) from the incoming wave of immigrants- then at the very least a huge portion of these right leaning Latinos would certainly classify with the middle class, which again the Harris Walz ticket is mostly focused on and has by far explained the most how and what they will be doing for the middle class. Including housing, raising children and starting a business as well as protecting unions and protecting your health your right to have an abortion, and your right to be and love who ever.
You can tell , he is spoiled and never had a labor job and never struggled , it’s disgusting bc she talk like she knows

Hispanics are inheritly conservative and are all about traditional values. They come from Catholic/Christian nations, which is why they lean right
O quizás nos fuimos de esos países predominantemente católicos porque rechazamos precisamente ese conservadurismo religioso.
When you make broad generalizations about topics you barely understand, you add nothing of value to the debate.
@Dan210871 that is possible, I could imagine some despise their religious roots, no different than the growth of secularism here in the states. How do I "barely understand" ? I'm hispanic, I'm speaking from my experience, I didn't say that is the only reasoning to this outcome, what makes your comments more valuable than mine? cause you're typing in Spanish on a comment section of an english broadcast? What are your vague comments bringing to the debate?
Catholic in my family & community means voting Democrat.
@@jPuma817 You are the one who issued a broad generalization and failed to back it up logically or empirically. You're the one that ignored how the Catholic Church sided with multiple dictatorships in Latin America, which in turn prompted many to emigrate to the US. That you speak carelessly in spite of your ignorance is what makes my comments more valuable than yours.
@Dan210871 Oh, please teach us from your omniscient cause I fail to see how you know better than me on this matter? Do my experiences equate to nothing? Somehow, you are smarter and know best with your broad statements? Yeah, the church all throughout history has sided with kings and dictatorships all over the world, so what, that doesn't deter people from their faith. What empirical evidence is required? I said the most logical statement ever, if you come from a predominately Catholic country, it makes sense that the political party that caters to Christians nationalism, and speaks bible verses, would be appealing to people that have deeply rooted religious beliefs
It just doesn’t make sense, sorry.
