It drove me NUTS that Walz had to spend his time speaking by debunking Vance's lies. Vance DID say he wanted a national abortion ban, there's audio of it ffs. Walz admitted that he misspoke. Tim Walz actually admits when he makes a mistake, Vance just straight up lies. I 100% am now supporting Harris/Walz.

Honestly, I was kind of surprised at how civil this debate was. Even though there were a few spars and a lot of lies from one guy, both of the men actually seemed to be respectful of each other and I was glad that there was more talk on policy instead of dog whistling.
How a debate is supposed to work
That’s why I don’t even bother watching any Trump debates. I just wait for the memes and do my own research but I agree. It’s almost we forgot how normal debates supposed to be
Somehow a sense of Americans just being respectful of there fellow Americans on both sides. Being respectful and willing to solve the problem's. Been missing America being America.
What was even nicer was the end: they not only shook each others’ hand, but were chatting. Then each of their wives approached and they introduced their opponent to their wife. And then they each approached the moderators and shook their hands. Reminds me of how politics in America SHOULD be, and how far we have strayed from that with one particular individual.
And noone talked about eating cats and dogs!

I'll admit, Vance was a little more disarming and Walz was more nervous than I thought they would be. Still, Walz sounding a little wonky at times doesn't compare to Vance lying about the state of our manufacturing, energy production, and trying to scapegoat legally present Haitian migrants in Ohio as if they are related to illegal border crossings in the South.
Vance is a professional liar. Glad you noticed it because the skill is keeping the lying part under the radar.

I watched the entire vp debate. They both actually spoke clearly and cordially and spoke on some policies. The debate definitely solidified and locked in my support for harris

Tim Walz did incredible, he could've hit Vance Harder on Project 2025 & the fact Vance wouldn't certify an election if Trump Lost. But I'd give his performance an 8 out of 10. 💙
Totally agree that it was a missed opportunity to lay out trump/vance’s obvious, direct connections to project 2025. Personally id score him lower because of effectiveness because it’s clear the campaign is in an overly “do no harm” state of mind. I think he’s far more convincing when he’s being himself without constraints. While I disagree with the strategy, I get it because JD Vance is so fake you never know which one of his personalities is gonna show up

Vance spent most the debate talking in circles using baseless claims. There was absolutely zero substance to his responses.
That's the thing with Vance. He's admittedly collected and well spoken, but has absolutely zero conviction and awful policy. It's like being in debate club and being forced to defend a position you fundamentally disagree with or have no answer; it forces you to speak around it.
Unfortunately for a lot of folks, just speaking well is enough.
Like if you were living under a rock and had no idea who Vance was, you'd think he won. But every answer was gross hyperbole, exaggeration or lies, just spoken well.

To be fair, Vance is trained as a lawyer. Yale taught him how to talk out whatever side of his mouth was paying him at the moment. If he magically became Kamala's running mate tomorrow, he'd just talk out of the other side of his mouth. His true position, if any, doesn't enter into it when the potential payoff is being the youngest President* in US history.
* If Trump wins and then passes in the first two years of his term, Vance would bet Teddy Roosevelt's record.
Walz destroyed Vance, especially after the first commercial break. That last question about Donvict still saying he won given to Vance on if he thinks Donvict lost was the shot🏀 that won at the final buzzer.
Vance was more slick and polished but insincere and dishonest throughout. Walz started off awkwardly but got stronger as he honestly and capably answered complex questions. He came across as likeable, qualified and honest, except about when he arrived in China in 1989! When he asked Vance pointblank if Trump lost the 2020 election and Vance wouldn't answer it was chilling. Walz got in the only zingers of the night. My favorite: "Are you going to support democracy or are you going to support Donald Trump?"
Tell me you don't think supporting Kamala "supports democracy". No one cast a primary vote for her, she was picked by political elites (NOT democracy). In fact Biden didn't debate anyone in a primary either. Even in 2020 the primary was stopped and the party politicians got behind Biden and didn't allow the primary to play out. This is an alarming lack of choice from the party that claims to care about democracy.

I keep seeing polished and to me, this really underlines the fact that social media has somehow weakened the average person's ability to detect fakeness. I've been in casting for 20 years and Vance always seems like he's acting. If he sent in a self tape, I would reject it within a matter of seconds due to a complete lack of authenticity.
This felt like an old school political debate. Right down to their interaction on stage after the debate was over.

The local cbs news came on right after this aired and included a story about a six-year-old shooting themselves with a loaded gun they found while their uncle was watching them. So...sometimes it's just the guns. Side note: maybe, JD, people don't want to be trusting their family with childcare. This uncle was presumably trying to help but didn't think to child-proof his guns!

To be fair, fact checking wouldn't have changed much. You can not fact check Vance's lies in real time. Where Walz won was in being able to get Vance to dodge gotcha answers, like "did Donald Trump win in 2020?" Vance won by not being as insane as Trump.

Man, it's amazing that CBS, a news outlet, decided the one thing they weren't going to do during the debate is their job: being journalists...
CBS is an advertising distribution system. Everything they put on the air is for the sole purpose of making a buck. Their news shows, like this debate, are a means to an end. Fact checking would not sell more ad space - on the contrary, it might cause them some audience share if their facts didn't agree with the received wisdom of some viewers
TH-cam is much the same, with the added cost savings of all commentary being audeince provided by you and I.
Let's be honest, Vance was never going to beat Tim in policy popularity. That's why the Republicans are never going to contend against them with actual policies.
