I literally can't believe some of these comments. Fredi just sang the SHIT out of that song. I get that some people like Tracie Thoms better but come on give credit where it's due. Fredi was the original for a reason.
Agree! While I love Tracie in the role, Fredi's voice is just soooo much more soulful and rich, especially with her growls and riffs. I also think she and Idina had slightly better chemistry (every "Take Me or Leave Me" with them feels so raw, emotional and passionate) while Tracie had better chemistry with Eden (who are also a great duo).
i just watched the 1996 video and Idina sounds so different lmao. like, here she sounds a lot lighter and kidlike, and doesnt sound like she was straining at all. she sounded a lot huskier, and i kinda liked it
@@pjm9275 she did not smoke. She had an interview about it. They do shows 8x in a week back then. From rehearsals to on-stage performances, her voice is pretty much overused. It's like a sore throat underway. The husky voice was understandable. 🙂
I like how people always talk about idina singing frozen lol..uhmmm..she was Broadway first that's why she sounds amaaazingg.. we've already known idina could saaanngggg lol..only one Maureen and one idina lol period
I love the 1996 video with these two. Idina's voice was huskier, grittier...and I liked it, within the context of her character and the scene. Here, it sounds too "smooth" and "refined".
After the Rent Live thing I had to re-watch the original Cast (movie) and original Broadway production cast to erase the mistake that was that Live thing...
Who has seen Idina on tour and attempt to get picked to sing the song with her live?!!! And who is stoked for Idina's Broadway Homecoming to the Nederlander in REDWOOD?!!!
Am I the only one who doesn't really feel Fredi as Joanne? Like she's an amazing singer and I'm not denying that, I just don't get the same vibes whenever I watch clips with her that I do whenever I see Tracie as Joanne.
Fredi's living the age gap more (which is why they turned down Tracie when she first applied - she was too young). Tracie doesn't have that and it tells. I can tell you from experience that this is what it feels to have a difference of, say, ten years between two women in a relationship (I've been both sides). The older one is quieter, more sophisticated, and appears more detached, while the other appears restless and over-passionate. When you have same-age casts, they are more balanced, and therefore appear more loving, more open, closer. Casting Fredi and Idina made Maureen and Joanne what they were intended to be - an on-off item.
kara smith Fredi is more understated, which is not a bad thing. We have all gotten so used to Tracie in the role, now. It is hard to see a different take. I find her Joanne refreshing.
I think these two are the best singers and actors out of the whole original cast, I think Idina can do no wrong with singing and acting, and Fredi just sounds great. I just don't like the original cast! They sound annoying. I like the 2008 performance!
okay but is no one gonna mention the fact that after the last “take me or leave me” idina jumped off that table in heels and didn’t break her ankles.
To me Idina will always be the one and only Maureen. She slays that role so much it becomes a part of her.
Idina Menzel so voice has matured greatly over the years
I literally can't believe some of these comments. Fredi just sang the SHIT out of that song. I get that some people like Tracie Thoms better but come on give credit where it's due. Fredi was the original for a reason.
Ricardo R. Fredi is amazing. Anyone that has anything negative to say is because they are so full of envy and jealousy.
I like Tracie best as Charlotte from Falsettos :) Fredi is the best Joanne though
one sided loyalty is for suckas
That’s a fair opinion
J. Alexander exactly!!! Although Tracie and Idina are the better maureen and joanne duo, Freddie is one hell of a Joanne

Alicia Allen She used to smoke
Kind of like Elsa singing Rent. It's very princess like here.

WE SANG THE F*** OUT OF THAT SONG THAT NIGHT!!!
Idina rocks in this part.
Fredi was so amazing! She and Tracie Thoms were my fav Joannes.
Idina owns it 😍
Idina is amazing, but I love Fredi's voice! She killed it!
I like how people always talk about idina singing frozen lol..uhmmm..she was Broadway first that's why she sounds amaaazingg.. we've already known idina could saaanngggg lol..only one Maureen and one idina lol period
Holy smokes Fredi!!!!! OMG!!!!!!!! U killed that baby!!!!! 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻
Fredi seems like the real showstopper here. in this performance
She didn’t enunciate at all
Fredi Walker... Yes !
She owns this song
Sigh! Love Idina and Fredi. This is the first play that I fell in love with, and it's still great
I love the 1996 video with these two. Idina's voice was huskier, grittier...and I liked it, within the context of her character and the scene. Here, it sounds too "smooth" and "refined".
Like, more... Disney :D (Yes I know she played Elsa after this video)
Love Idina!!

snx amazing!
It's so annoying to me the disrespect that Fredi is getting.
2 years later...but whose disrespecting ms fredi
Damn, Fredi got a voice, for real.
Amazing!
Wow
After the Rent Live thing I had to re-watch the original Cast (movie) and original Broadway production cast to erase the mistake that was that Live thing...
This is so great :D

Tracie wasn’t the original Joanne?
Nope, her and Rosario Dawson were the only two that were cast just for the movie.
Am I the only one who doesn't really feel Fredi as Joanne? Like she's an amazing singer and I'm not denying that, I just don't get the same vibes whenever I watch clips with her that I do whenever I see Tracie as Joanne.

Thanks for this
While I do love Tracie in the role, I really like your analysis of the dynamic between the characters
I like Fredi from what I see of her but it is hard not to think of Tracie in this role
kara smith Fredi is more understated, which is not a bad thing.
We have all gotten so used to Tracie in the role, now. It is hard to see a different take.
I find her Joanne refreshing.

Skylar Vaden Bosch I know. Adams voice makes me cringe
But the original cast are almost the same in the film version.
Fredi seems like she trying too hard to get a reaction and that bothers me
