Excellent tool, AND excellent description: you told us what you were going to do, you showed us how and why in making the tool, you showed us the use of the tool (how and why), then showed us what can go wrong--wow! That is excellent teaching. Nicely done!

TH-cam suggests videos based on the types of videos watched. So I wasn't surprised when TH-cam suggested I watch some other kerf maker videos.
I have to say cobber, "Your kerfmaker video is hands-down THE-BEST-VIDEO-OUT THERE I HAVE SEEN SO FAR! BAR NONE!" I reiterate, bar none!
Simple, to the point, and easy to use. Not too simple and not too complex. Spot-freaking-on!
    Thank you 😍

Nice. Explained what it was, showed how to make it, then how to use is. Much better than about 99% of the how-to videos on utube, and no longer than needed. I don't think I will ever need one, but very well done.

As of today (May 26, 2020) there are about 790K views and 29K "thumbs up." There should be many, many times that number. I wish more people would simply say "thanks" by clicking the "thumbs up."
I only recently discovered your channel, and it has quickly become one of my favorites. Your instructions are clear, and your projects are both realistic and useful. This project is a good example. Thanks for all you do.

I just made this. It works like a beauty! So simple, yet so effective.
Pro tip, plane down the side that will take the wing-nut, so the top side is just proud of the bottom. This will allow the washer to get a really good squeeze on the top half.

Thank you for this video. The design is simple, effective, and doable. After blowing up/flinging my first one with a cheap rabbeting bit I made a second try and got a nice one that didn't try to blind or maim me. A couple of tests to dial it in and I am SO pleased with it. I was able to cut 6 long dados with it to build my daughter a bunch of picture frame ledges. Nailed them all on the first try. Thanks so much. This thing *rocks*.

04:50 A fairly fool proof way of checking the thickness of the blade, including any wobble it may have, is to use a piece of scrap and cut a square section out of it. After cutting, place the small square back against the piece of scrap it was cut from and set the depth of the kerf jig screw from that. Doing this will essentially be measuring all of the teeth of the blade at once, so that you more or less eliminate the guess work.

For years I've done a trick I got from Matthias Wandel of taking a scrap of the stock to be set in the groove, ripping it in half and tacking it back together with a dab of glue and using that for the offset. It works perfectly, but it's sort of an annoying process (particularly if I don't have any scrap of the right stock). I saw a video years ago on the kerfmaker but never made one. I don't know why, it looks way easier. I'm going to make your version today.

Thank you. I've made many mistakes on dados over the years -- too tight, too loose. I was thinking about buying the BCTW KM-1 commercial Kerfmaker, but (a) it's out of stock at Amazon; and (b) more than $50 when they DID have it. It's $61 direct from BCTW. The KM-2 is even pricier. I don't believe they're worth it, no matter how well made.
Your little DIY kerfmaker works just as well, and it was FREE -- I already had all the stuff I needed to construct one. Works like a champ.
One possible improvement: Use a wood-screw with very fine threads for the kerf-adjustment -- easier to make very fine, precise adjustments.

I've been making cabinets for a good many years. I've always used a stacked dado for my dado's, but it always takes up a lot of time setting it up and getting it right. The good thing about the dado blade is that with one pass you've cut the whole thing. And you can repeat the cuts fast and easy. But there have been times I've cheated and used just the kerf to dado out a slot. That has its problems too - if you're using a cross cut blade, the peaks of the teeth of the blade form a V groove that has to be sanded out. Now you run the risk of an uneven dado bottom, and a possibility of sanding the dado wider.
Your project is quick and simple. The only thing I need is a RIP blade to get a smooth bottom dado. The problem with using a rip blade to cut across the grain is tear-out. IF I had two table saws I could set one up for a dedicated dado setup and the other for general purposes. But then there's an expensive piece of equipment taking up a whole lot of space in an already confined space. Plus the money it costs to have a tool just sitting there except for occasional use. I think I'm going to stick with my dado blade for now.

    Nice and simple! :-)
If you don't change the blade that often then you can do away with the adjustment screw at the end of the bottom part, then after you've squared up the two parts make a cut, with the same blade that you are going to use, where the two parts meets up at the other end of the the kerf maker. This cut will need to be deep enough to cut through all pf the top part so that it's now a blade's width shorter than the bottom and you should get a perfect fit without having to adjust anything it.
When you swap blades, close up the two parts fully, square the ends up and make a new cut along the joint at the top of the kerf maker.

Made one this afternoon. So much easier to make then most of those complicated ones around. Easier to use as well. Thank you so much for this. Oh and a great commentary as well.

Dead simple and very effective. Exactly the way a too like this should be. I have seen fancier designs but this is way to make fast and it does the job well. Great job Pask!
