@ricjan58 - Actually, among those who know of Gene's music, he is very highly rated. I think it's probably more accurate to say that he's sadly UNrated, by which I mean, far too many people are completely ignorant of his work.
Saw him at McCabe's Guitar shop with Carla Olsen. I will never forget. He died a few weeks later but his voice and empathetic voice was stronger than ever. I miss him and those who have passed before and since for the courage they showed trying to be themselves, and nothing else.
QUE BELLO COMENTARIO..SOY DE ARGENTINA Y UNO DE MIS SUEÑOS UBIERA SIDO PODER ESTAR EN ALGUN RECITAL DE ESTE MARAVILLOSO ARTISTA..ME DOLIO MUCHO SU PARTIDA YA QUE SENTIA GRAN ADMIRACION COMO ARTISTA😢SUS CANCIONES ME LLEGAN AL ALMA..DESDE MUY CHICA LO PUDE ESCUCHAR SUS CANCIONES Y HOY SIENDO UNA PERSONA ADULTA SIGO CON SUS BELLAS MELODIAS..TE FELICITO POR LA SUERTE DE ESTAR EN SU RECITAL..😍💿🎤🎵🎶👏👏👏SALUDOS 🙋
I saw him at the Boarding House in San Francisco around 1980 with McGuinn and Hillman. Before the show, he was in the bar and we made eye contact and I quickly shifted away. I realized later it would have been quite OK to go say hello and perhaps even buy him a drink. It's one regret I have. Of course, Crosby lived in Mill Valley, so late in the set he showed up and sang with them, basically a Byrds reunion for about 20 bucks. I am also one of the few people in the audience for the Ed Sullivan show in NY when Crosby got in an argument with the producer or somebody and they almost didn't go on the air. They were never invited back.
The man was a gigantic talent. Beautiful songwriter, superb voice and one of the true founders of country-rock. Why his body of solo work did not receive the same amount of commercial attention as the work he did during his brief tenure with the Byrds remains a mystery.
I've got 4 or 5 Gene Clark songs I play around with and this is one of them. I've loved it since the first time I heard it. He had such empathy and poetry in his soul. It was around this time he was recovering from major intestinal surgery brought on by alcohol. You can see it in his face that he isn't well. They say you live life through the front windscreen but only learn about it through the rear view mirror. In his post Byrds lifetime he just never got the exposure or credit he deserved. I suppose he wasn't alone even Roger was not exactly a household name after the Byrds. But looking back I just feel so nostalgic and sad when I see these clips of a true human being and wonderful talent. RIP Gene. You stayed the course and kept the faith. Rest easy.
Perfection!! I can't believe it was 25 years ago (24 May 1991) that, tragically, we lost Gene. Thankfully, through TH-cam, wonderful performances like this will live on. Rest in Peace, Gene.
Thank you for this very fine video. Good picture and sound. I've never seen it before. Gene's writing is beautiful and his voice and phrasing are certainly among the very best.
I consider myself fortunate to be from an age group exposed to Gene Clark music since the middle 60s. Some say he was underated as a song writer. I disagree. I think everyone of the Baby Boom Generation like me know full well the impact Gene Clark music had on their lives.
With the rat tail and earring, I wonder if Gene thought about the first couple lines of the lyrics. It looked like some bad advice given to him by a “hip” insider trying to help him skew to a younger audience. A beautiful rendition of a great lost classic. Having them Nashville cats back him up can’t hurt. I doubt if that audience even knew who he was.
It’s 2024, and I just now heard this for the first time. I grew up with the Byrds, etc., but beyond McGuinn, Clark, & Hillman I really didn’t follow Gene’s later work. This is a gorgeous song, and from the first couple of vocal phrases, I automatically/in my head heard Graham P singing the harmony. Did they do any work together? Thanks!
By "Graham P," I assume you mean Gram (not Graham) Parsons. I don't think they ever did anything in the studio together, but I've seen a photo from a tour from 1973 that included a number of ex-Byrds and related musicians, including Doug Dillard, Gene Clark, Gram Parsons, Michael Clarke, Richie Furay, Jon Corneal, Rusty Young, Chris Hillman, Sneaky Pete Kleinow, Gene Parsons, Clarence White. Shortly afterwards, Clarence White passed, as did Gram. If your search on "Gene Clark Gram Parsons" and click images, it comes up as one of the top results.
So sad that because of 80's fashion trends he had to wear a cross hearing, a pony-tail, and appear as a clean pop singer. I think instead he was a true independent traveller of the song: always himself, and always on the road. And stupid market believes killed him. Now it's all a late retrospective celebration...
Gene possesses me. Loved the earring, hated the ponytail, but he sounded great. Been a fan for over 50 years. Always felt he never got his due while alive. I will always lovr him, and the beautiful music hr he made.
@@christineparker8020 Understood! You're a beautiful lady in your comment concerning GC. I've been a fan of his for the longest but I always thought I was alone, so to speak, with liking his music. Little did I know that I was mistaken. MANY dug and still do enjoy his soulful music. Peace! ♐
bzfgt bzfgt oh my fucking god are you serious? Listen to the music not criticise his attire, how pathetic. I suppose you'd disapprove of me wearing, earrings, nipple rings, belly button rings and sometimes a cock ring wouldn't you? For fucks sakes, jesus it's 2017 (2016 when you made your comment), grow up, listen to the music and appreciate what you supposedly came here for.
Gene Clark is one of the greatest talents I've come across in my life. The world can learn a lot from this spirit.
The most underrated songwriter in rock and roll history.Period!
I don't know about the most but he's definitely up there..
@ricjan58 - Actually, among those who know of Gene's music, he is very highly rated. I think it's probably more accurate to say that he's sadly UNrated, by which I mean, far too many people are completely ignorant of his work.

Timeless songwriting genius

You were very lucky to see him and Carlo
I was born in 1985. I was not that lucky in terms of that. Fortunately I got to know his music unlike a lot of people out there.
The audience for this show were blessed to hear Gene Clark's masterpiece. His vocal on this song might be the best vocal Nashville Now ever recorded.
Gene's voice make me almost cry. What a lost. Gene, R.I.P.
Greetings to all Gene-fans from Holland/Europe
One of my favorite American singers
Thanks from Denmark. Sadly not many people in our part of the world know him.
Nobody seems to have a voice even close to Gene. He was a rare Byrd.
We love you Gene, I will always appreciate your work, personal and with The Byrds. Sing for jesus Gene🕊
Like quite a few Gene Clark songs, it is sad yet has a kind of spiritual warmth to it that makes me feel happy & optimistic.
I saw him at the Boarding House in San Francisco around 1980 with McGuinn and Hillman. Before the show, he was in the bar and we made eye contact and I quickly shifted away. This is a rare treat. To see him sing one of his classic and most beautiful songs, and with such good quality. Thank you.
The man was a gigantic talent. Beautiful songwriter, superb voice and one of the true founders of country-rock. Why his body of solo work did not receive the same amount of commercial attention as the work he did during his brief tenure with the Byrds remains a mystery.
We heard..he backed away from the mass exposure the Byrds had..wow
'No Other' might be one of the best records ever made.
Untouchable. Always had the finest mesh of major and minor chord arrangements
Beautiful song. Beautiful man. Greatly missed
I love the piano intro before Gene started singing. He could arrange with the best. Just as good as McGuinn, if not better.
Gene Clark forever!💖
A genius artist. A beautiful song. Nashville Now, thank you!!

One of the great writers of our time or any other time. His catalogue of work is one masterpiece after another.
He could still do it even this late on with all that was going on. Fantastic.
What a great songwriter, singer, and could always put great bands together.
What an incredible talent. What a loss when he left. Thanks for sharing, mcbyrds.
Just a great talent. Gene Clark's music lives on.
I never heard this one before today - beautiful Mr. Byrd.
Thank you for this very fine video. Good picture and sound. I've never seen it before. Gene's writing is beautiful and his voice and phrasing are certainly among the very best.
After the beautiful BBC-documentary it's time to remember Gene - White ight is just about one of the most wonderful albums I ever had...
Aah I miss him.
God bless ya Gene.
He was gone too soon. His music has possessed me from the 1st time I heard his voice. It still does, and he always will.
What a talent. So sad he died young but happy we have his music. Best Byrd
Such a talent...miss him!
As usual, Gene just casually knocked it out of the park. Beautiful performance.

When Gene Clark was in his best, he was right there with Dylan, Young and with my all time fav, Warren Zevon.
Gene Clark's solo career definitely deserved a better fate 😞
this man....such a loss
Beautiful! Thanks for uploading! We love you Gene!
Wow what a song.
Genius!!!
Lovely - thank you :-)
great performance
Poor Geno, he looks about spent here. Still an amazing performance.
Linda música, ele estava muito abatido, mas foi um reconhecimento merecido!
I like the hair, the earring, he looks classy. Anyway, whether you like them or not, they are merely reflections and not the substance of the man.
Thanks for this!
wunderbar
Damn, the more talent they have, the more methodically they destroy their bodies.
Un grande artista sfortunato ed incompreso : senza di lui, non sarebbero mai esistiti i Byrds ! .. E nessuno gli ha mai detto GRAZIE ! .....
Noi suoi estimatori lo ringraziamo fino all' eternità. È stato un vero grande artista!

Para mi el mas grande y no soy exagerado
Very talented! RIP
Большой музыкант! Но не сложилось у него как то ,жаль

Hear the wind.
So sad to see what drug abuse did to Gene.
A troubled addict
You are welcome.

He looks fabulous. There is no sense in which market beliefs killed him.
Such nonsense remarked about his earring...so what? Enjoy the song instead. BTW: I wear 22 earrings and it's 2016...Peace...♐

Just missed the Americana genre and lord knows due to his cult status woulda done great.

Fantastic. Earring is a bad idea.
C'mon, it was 1988!! It was the style back then!
