Honda 400ex and 450
Any brand excluding Yamaha. it would be nice to see more than one manufacturer make a legitimate sport quad for competition.
Sorry guys but my vote would be for new sport trikes. Legally they can be produced again.
KFX 450r
Guaranteed the Honda for sure
Cool to know the wheels we sent are on that beautiful Z400. It would be an awesome day if the 400s got brought back from Suzuki or Honda. Definitely believe they would sell like crazy.
Thank you again man! I really do believe a 400 series quad would sell too.
SxS should be taboo those bastards killed ATV's
@@abbybonilla4511 good
I think they’re just putting a break in between so all the other sport quads get slopped out my guess anyways
@@bowdude21 really hope so. Don’t see why Honda wouldn’t get back into the game.
We need another Top Quad season!!
Ive owned both the 400ex & Z400 & the Z400 is still in my garage. It really is a fantastic quad. Its a shorter stroke engine & it makes power like right now. Very fun bike. Nice job restoring that Z400 & rescuing another sport quad
I'm a Honda guy and prefer a 400ex, my buddy had a Z400 and it was kinda unreliable.. Mainly because it had many owners and many mods by garage mechanics.. Every machine seems most reliable in stock form! To each their own! Just get out and ride! ✌️
@@lucascady4992 oh don’t get me wrong I still think the 400ex is fun quad but prefer the zippier engine in the Z400. Yes agree…get out & ride. They are all fun!
That is the nicest z400 i've ever seen!! Love the Vids!!!!
Thank you for watching them man!
Oh man its time to dig out my Kawasaki KFX 400 i have an 06 that i bought brand new had maybe 6 hours on it then i put an Athena 440 kit full yoshimira stainless exhaust DRZ intake and exhaust cams and dynojet took care of my jetting. Holeshots all around i emptied the tank and ran it till it shut off and put it under a tarp been there 15 years. Yep its coming out!! Beautiful and awesome running build Mike!!!!
Wow man, that sounds like an awesome machine you have - bring it back from hibernation and thank you for the love on my Z build 🤘
@@MichaelSabo i went out and pulled the cover off last night and am picking up some gas and a battery oil n filter after work today moth balls did the job and kept the critters from building homes in the crevaces and airbox. Excited to hear it run again
LTR 450R Love to see that build! I feel like that quad was very short lived
“Alright, I’ve gotta slow down.” Proceeds to rip it.
You spent $17,000 on parts? Granted the videos are entertaining bro but Jesus that's absolutely bonkers. Yootoob can't be making you that kind of bank to justify dropping that kind of cheddar on a 30HP pooch.
Hahaha that is insane
Actually 50k if you watched
@@matty.maybach You still have time to delete that comment. Before you respond, READ the post you felt the need to comment on again slooooowly and maybe this time it'll sink in. Pay particular attention to the word spelled p-a-r-t-s. I pray that a new sport quad hits the market. #savesportquads
You should never sell your completly restored bikes. You should collect them because they are master pieces and unique.
Thank you man, I'd love to keep them all. In time when I have the space and resources, I will make a showroom.
@@MichaelSaboI was thinking the same, I would love to see a show room with all the builds... I was kind of dissapointed when you said you were going to sell the Raptor 660
If any manufacturer brought back a simple / reliable / low maintenance 400cc sport quad id be alll over it. Id also love if they brought back the banshee
Loved the Z400. Very reliable machine. I have bought and sold probably 8 of them. Now Please start the Tecate 4 build!!
Tecate coming soon!
I do a lot of back woods technical trail riding. On my raptor 770cc I prefer 23 inch tall up front and 22 inches out Back
I want to see a lakota vs Mojave, put them through the test and then compare with a 400ex or ltz 400 for the final
Honestly my favorite sport quad ever is the yellow and black 60th anniversary yfz. A quad I'd like to see be made? Probably if Yamaha made their own 400 maybe base it off of the 450x chassis. Anyways great video the Z400 is immaculate.
1987 Honda trx250x or a 1987 Kawasaki kfs250 Mojave I’d love to see you restore and rip one just to watch your videos on either or both machines then do a shootout with them I own a 87 trx250x and love my little quad.
Dude, can't believe you did this after we left lol. i would have loved to see this thing in action. Sounds friggin mint! ahh man, bringing me back to 2005. I think I need to find me another one. I would love to see the z400 come back!
You would have loved it Joe - maybe another time 🤘
Shout out from Arizona!Inspired by your series, I picked up a cherry, garage-kept, all original 2005 KFX a week ago.
I live in az to seems like Noone takes care of there toys out here haha and still want top dollar. What site did you use to find it ? Offer up ?
Hey Michael! I must have misunderstood or assumed when I shouldn't have but I thought this was being built to not ride? Wasn't that the reason to get all the stock tires with the whiskers still on, new old stock OEM parts, and stuff? Obviously I was wrong, but it just seems odd? This should go without saying but, it's your quad and you can do whatever you'd like of course, just confused at seeing you ride it is all. Thanks for all the videos, hope you keep having fun!
I went back and forth - It rides so nicely though, so it's looking like it will be a rider.
Man that quad build is awesome bro. The Ass Dyno is my favorite brand for sure. I'd love to see you do a KFX700 build. V Twins are an absolute blast. You've gotta ride one, at least.
I've heard great things about the KFX700 - I'd love to get my hands on one, one of these days.
Hi Micheal,i have been watching your vids since you had 15k subs, and ive been asking forever for a trx 450 enduro build
Thank you for watching and supporting for so long man! I'd love to do a 450R some day
I get $120 a hour but I do have regulars that I've done work for many years and a lot of them I will just charge a flat rate on a lot of work as long as they provide the parts but if some brings me some straight nightmare BS I will charge $150 a hour
Thank you for the input on this
You just need to ride the kx250x more to get faster and comfortable. Like they say all good things come with time.
Most definitely
Bring back the LTR450
Do the 05 trx450 best quad of all time
It's probably the neutral switch wire down by shifter?
the lowest rate i found where i live in the pnw is $100 an hour, everywhere else ranged from $135 to $160 an hour
Thank you for the feedback on this
You're a wet dream as far as customers go. Overpaid for every single item
My favorite quad has always been the 05 and newer honda 400ex. Plenty of power.. and the 05 and newer have reverse. Which is a must for older guys like myself.
I could only ever dream of a quad like this. Thank you for letting me live through your eyes brother.
I hope you enjoyed it man! Wish you could ride it!
Boss there is a quadzilla on marketplace for 15,500 he started it at 17,000 no one is biting. Awesome quad you have done great work over the years but I don't think you'll see 17,000 for it boss. Keep up the awesome work. And that kx250 go big on it but not too big. No one is biting much on them either. Or what you can do build them shit out of them then sell when Trump gets back in office when people have money again lol. Gas, food, mortgages is what people have to pay now days no room for more toys. 😅
I hear you man - housing prices especially are out of control
I have a 2005 LTZ 250 QuadSport
Please send picture showing you cleaned after riding. 😊
The ending of this video on the lawn is after cleaning - came out nearly evidence free!
Bro. $50,000? Fifty thousand dollars??
Scratch the 700xx idea. In the future you HAVE to do a RZR 800. They're cheap now a days and I bet the videos would perform well. That RM65 will be a fun build. I'm stoked to see what graphics you do on the $1k graveyard themed KX250. On finding a property since you're maybe not tied to such a specific location... try posting wanted ads for off market properties. Cool to hear an update on backing out of the one property on your other channel. Love the vids man, keep up the good work!
Mike what’s going with the corvette
I second this
From what i can tell its just a super complicated and expensive project so he hasnt really had the time or resources to keep working on it a lot
If you go back a month in his videos he has a channel update and he updates everything and he did go over whats going on with the vette and other things on his channel.
Rust from salt water 💧 unfortunately
He already stated he's waiting for a shop/ house for him to move into to be able to make it happen.
Im a casual rider.
Last raced a quad 15yrs ago
So Mate bought a Kfx400 and a ltz400
KFX Stock
Ltz. Has an exhaust
But overall the ltz feels much better to ride.
Same day I played on a ltr450.
Didn't enjoy it as much on the mx track
I come from a TRX450R with kinda stock and just a slip on HMF pipe.
I miss my quad from back in the day
You should get back the kfx450r I have one and I love it
Awesome quad, I've just had it for a while now and I want to switch it up.
😂 what the hell they do to the badlands all that used to be sand hills now it's all flat and boring shame they ruined alot of that park for side by sides I can tell already shame
This video shows maybe 2% of the park... they have a ton of trails that are too tight for SXS and a bunch of rolling hills with sand still. They also have an entire section of rocks and technical trails made for SXS.
About 5 years ago I bought a 2004 LTZ400. I took it to this guy Al in central Jersey who got it up and running for me. I purchased new plastics to change the color to match my other quads. All I wanted was a nice running machine to enjoy, not a full restoration to factory fresh, I think it all cost me about $2,800. Thanks Mike for sharing this build.
Its crazy how fast a build ads up bro. I totally understand spending way more the could ever be recouped
I was never a fan of the Z400 until this build. Very nice work! Makes me want a Z400 now.
Glad you like the build - thank you!
16k isn't bad to me when a factory banshee can go for 20k in my area.
That is a good point - here in the Philly area I'm seeing Banshees in the 15k range a lot.
@michaelsabo now you have to do a 91/92 lt250r resto. The 400 needs a big brother 🤷🏼♂️
I have to do an old quad racer one of these days - I agree!
Soon I hope I’m restoring 92 right now. I had one in 92. Witz Motorsports and and Mark LoScerbo would be a lot of help. They’ve been huge for me and most of the Facebook group guys make a lot of nice parts for them.
Always liked my 06 Ltz. Wish I'd have kept it. Prices are way too high for me to justify getting another one right now though.
I just got rid of mine last year. Payed way too much and put too much into it. People want so much for a clapped out one. I sold mine for 900 less than I got it and fixed pretty much everything lol
I'd like to see Suzuki (or Kawasaki maybe?) re-release the 2009/10 Z400. My favorite sport quad being the dark green Special Edition.
I can totally see you leaving this one bone stock and maybe picking up one of the fuel injected models to mod to the max. That would be cool to see.
Great job on the resto! Good to see it make the transformation. A lot of work, I know.
LOL! I got tired just watching you Mike! The Z400 turned out really flippin Awesome! Well done!! BulTaco!!
It came out beautiful man like going back to the atv golden age.
Honda 400 ex! I feel it's the best air cooled motor ever in an atv. If they ever brought these back I wish they would make the bugeye light version with reverse. I also wouldn't mind a 250r with estart and modern suspension 😎
I'd be all for a revitalized 400ex or lt 250r.. hell even a 400 ex with better suspension and liquid cooled maybe even I would absolutely want one.
I would love to see a kx500 or kx250 swapped mojave!
That would be an interesting build
BRO I was there hoping to meet u some how it didn't happen,,,,maybe next time.TTR
Sorry I missed you man, I will probably be there next year
@@MichaelSabo Thanks for the response. Illbe looking forward to next year .HAVE U EVER GONE TO TRIKE FEST AT HASPEN ACERS , AMAZING EVENT
I had a z400 and thought exactly what you think. Great quad, easy to ride, not too much power, and never not enough. Handled great. That being said, I now own a KTM 450 XC that I put a 525 top end on. I will say it is a complete step up from the z400. Better in just about every way. You should do a KTM XC ATV build (skip the SX version)...would be great to watch and then hear your opinion on it.
You're the fuckin man. I've watched every video at this point.
You're the man!! Thanks for watching all my videos 🤘
I have a 2006 kfx400, and a 1999 400ex, both being rebuilt (not restored) running riding. I think you would enjoy northern Michigan riding. Mio, Michigan.
All-time favorite, ltz400! Totally agree with your thoughts on the 400 class. Manufacturers, are you listening!? We stand a better chance of Cf moto coming out with a new sport quad. Japanese manufacturers are brain-dead to sport quads....I just purchased a new Cf Moto cforce 1000 touring atv, and that is crazy good! I also have an 03 ltz 400, 08 kfx 450r, and a 08 trx 700xx, all mint. I love sport quads...Anyway, love your videos!
Always wanted to go to the Badlands. Only about 5.5 hour drive for me. Maybe this year or next. I kept thinking while you were riding how much you sound like Pete Hager. Never realized that till now. LOL. Anyway very nice video Mike and the quad looks amazing!
The only set backs on the LTZ were manufacturing flaws.
Performance wise it is second to none. Well maybe second to the TRX 250R but, A high reving lightweight 4 Stroke in a superior chassis is a winner!. Plus, Reverse. The LTZ 400 IS a Snappy, fun, fast comfortable, sexy looking Quad.
I've owned 7 of them.
6 first Gen. 1 2012 model.
Now how about building a Doug Gust level Ltz 400?
I enjoyed watching your video, TRX 400 ex is my Fav quad of all time..
Thank you for watching man!
random question, but on those trails u don’t get scared there could be someone going the opposite way ur going n collide
If you look closely, you can see the yellow arrows - the trails are directional which is something I love about badlands. I do slow down at cross sections but it was a Sunday afternoon and pretty dead while making these videos.
@@MichaelSabo ohh i see it now! thanks for clarifying. Also love your videos! keep up the videos!
Man Mike im sorry but i don't think I could have rode it with hiw good it looks 🤣🤣 great job!!!!!
Besides my clapped out Blaster that I had at the end of high school I never actually got to ride any of these sport quads when they came out. The only kids I knew of in school that might have had any one of them was the son of the guy who owned the huge apple orchard in the area and maybe his friends. I never hung out with him. Of all of the sport quads released in the early 2000's that I got to actually see in person was a Bombardier DS650 and it was owned by a farmer my father knew. Aside from that I never got to ride it.
It's actually kind of disappointing if you think about it. In the early & mid 2000's you could still get a Banshee, Blaster and Warrior brand new from the dealer. Then there was the Raptor 660, Raptor 350 and Raptor 250. Along side those you had the Z400, KFX400, DVX400, the 400EX & 300EX. There was also the Polaris Predator & Outlaw, Cannondale Speed440, GasGas 300, the KFX700, DS650 and later the DS450 & Suzuki Quad Racer 450. Also don't forget Honda's TRX 450R and the TRX 700XX that was very short lived.
It seems like everyone and their cousin had a sport quad to offer back then, now the only sport quad you can buy new is a YFZ450 and Raptor 700.
Love your content!
I knew you looked familiar, I'm pretty sure you bought my old crf450 in 2016. I'm actually in the middle of a kfx400 restoration, so your build series has been very helpful.
“You won’t have any money to feed your family, your wife will hate you, but HEY, at least you beat your friend in a drag race that one time” 😂😂😂
Annoying that fricken flickering neutral light huh? Grrrh! A new gearbox switch should fix it, cos you've installed a new wirin' harness haven't ya? I'm an elec tech so elec probs piss me off extra badly!
I just loved how easily & smoothly she started! Like budder alright! Creamy! Lol! Beautiful note on that thing; sorta deep & throaty & not tinny at all.
How appropriate! The yellow Z400 on the yello track! Just effortless that girl I could just hear her, running like a Swiss watch. Obviously a testament to the loving care & nice parts you 'put into' her! Getting a bit intimate there Mike I guess it's possible to get too personal with a quad!😂!
You're a braver man than me mate, flyin' round that track! Just be careful, you've got a wife & (kids) who need you! You missed the trail a coupla times!😮! Don't miss the trail & not miss a tree ffs! Your margin for error is - well less as you speed up. Wusses like me, living a hectic hobby vicariously through you, just want you to be ok & not hurt yourself that's all. You don't have to win to be a champ mate!
Phew! I guessed $20k, not thinking about the labour involved, but at least, hopefully, you should earn some decent return from yt I guess?
Looking forward to the build tutorial on the Z400 it's gonna be siick!😊!
LTR 450R. Wish they would bring that quad back. Really nice quad for its time.
How about an 06 YFZ450, miss that quad. Or a 90s suzuki LT250R, miss that quad too. Regret selling them
They get a lot of hate but Yamaha warrior
I know you know this but. You'll never get even close to what you put into that. At most and I'm generous when I say this but You'll be luck to get $5000 out of it. I mean it's a 2003 z. But to be real I'd say more close to $4000 would be a good price for it. But I agree. It's a labor of love. and I wouldn't sell it.
ltr450!!!! and the ltz
Hour meter????? And the torque is 2ft lbs more than the KX but the KX has ALOT MORE HP!!!! Like over 15 mor on KX
I know im very light at 130 lb rider weight but my 04 trx 450r HRC equipped atv was faster i ever road. The only quad i felt near the toulrque was the 700 raptor.
I havent road the later year vfz450s so im not sure about them. The ktm 525 also was pretty fast byt doesnt have the torque of the hrc equipped 04 trx450r. Kickstart only.
In 06 they made the 05 motor illegal to race unless in unlimited class. Say the needed to destroke the 06 and newer trxs.
Ok so I watch your new videos every time they pop up, I’m looking for specifically a 2003 KX250 to do a homebrew version of what you do with these machines. Except like some of yours- a restomod “hard enduro” build that looks factory with all the proper goodies. Heading over to the extra channel right now to drool over the smokey fella.
I have had a kawasak kfx400 and an ltz400. I bought the kawisaki in 2005 brand new. It was orange. It was the best all around atv and most reliable and it would smoke the air cooled honda 400ex's that I had and handled much better for me too. I live in the Appalachian mtn. Area and have risen atvs since I was a little fellow I had my first honda at70 3 wheeler when I was 4 it was 1984 then i got a Honda fourtrax 125 in 1985 i believe. Then i got a 1989 suziki lt230 quadsport. And then I had a few suzuki lt250 quadracers one 500 and a couple branches then a few honda 400 ex and finally in 05 I bought the kfx400. Was my favorite. I have had honda 450rs since and now i have a kawasak kfx450r. Has the green fuel customs intake and a fuel management programmer but I would like to go to a carb and also repair the Battery issue with mine also. Cant keep a battery on this electric nightmare. But I do like it but to be honest the 400 was less maintenance and more fun in the rough trails. The 450r is geared way too high for the tough terrain in the area.
$100 per hr is totally fair in this case, even 10-20 years ago $100 was fair.
But as seen here, its not about price its more sentimental value than anything.
This is where your other project the KTM bike and the old owner just said "ok I'll buy a new bike" which I would've as well seeing as I don't have the tools and ability to work on bikes myself
I kinda want to see the 90s 250 Mojave back, its like a utility quad but also quite sporty. Sorta like the Lakota.
Also, thanks for sharing the parts breakdown. Its very helpful for finding some parts that are no longer available, even if they are chinses.
It's a toss up between my z400 and my raptor700r being the most comfortable sport quads I've ever owned great job on the build
Yours sounds soo dang good compared to mine. I guess its time for an exhaust repack!
Re pack and if your jetting is off that can make a difference in the tone
@MichaelSabo yeah I went through everything, it's jetted for the exhaust without the silencer core. And I had the timing set back to stock as it used to be a race bike. But it's still way raspy and more importantly obnoxiously loud. I will definitely invest in the packing. And maybe a silencer core if I can find one because they seem to be unobtanium.
You did a beautiful job on that quad. Most people would have modified it. But I'm glad that you stuck to your idea of keeping it completely stock. Nice job.
I work at a Honda Suzuki dealership and we charge $105 / hour. The Kawasaki and Yamaha dealer nearby charges $150 / hour.
Traded my z for a truck when i was 17. 25 now and i still think about it everyday. 🤦🏻♂️🤦🏻♂️
10 years ago i stressed out guys on 660 Raptors and 525 Outlaws in woodland trails riding my 1986 Honda 200X three wheeler. Cant imagine how i could have done on a quad like this. Side note i did race three wheelers in the 80's semi professionally.
I don't doubt it man - the rider is where the difference is!
The guys riding the 660
Raptors and 525 outlaws did not know how to ride 😂
I have owned and/or ridden several sport quads, and I still prefer ny 350x. Admittedly, I have not ridden a Z400.
I've restored 2 going on 3 yamaha Warriors but the 3rd one im looking to get a yz 250 2 stroke engine with all the fixings witch means I need to spend like 35 to 4000 on a good running bike😢😅 . A mike would you do that Build.
guck I always miss the badlands trip. I went one year when yall went, but never saw u guys. then after I found out u guys were at the drag stripper all day that day.
There should be a connection near the shifter, that is what runs the neutral light, the connection may be loose.
That whole unit I think is bad. There are contacts on the back that communicate with the shift drum and they looked a bit worn when I installed it.
As long as it doesn't effect the performance of the machine, but to be honest, looking down at a dead neutral light while in neutral, would bug me also.
Where is the torque chart, Mike? The rig turned up very nice! Well done, Sir.
Agree 100% on the 400 class. My favorite was the kfx400, something about that nose plastic for me haha. Great video!
Great job! I am a little surprised you didn’t go with the OEM switch set, axle, bars, and calipers. China metal is inferior to Japan metal, it will likely bend and rust easier.
@MichaelSabo Might have thrown you under the bus to design a motorcycle helmet for @kruesioriginals. Off road meets street!
Amazing build. Keep up the good work! You need to ride some of the trails in Michigan sometime.
Thank you man! I've heard the trails in Michigan are great!
Trails in Michigan are awesome brother 😎
Im gonna be honest i have 4 different fourwheelers(300ex 350 warrior 400ex and polaris predator 500)and each has their own perk so honestly i like them all equally i couldnt pick a favorite but i will say(and before you read on im not a pro rider this is just my experience) the 400ex feels the most plush when hitting bumps , the 300ex handles turns the nicest due to it being a smaller quad, the 350 warrior feels the most comfortable to sit on and the predator 500 is obivously the fastest of the four but i like the amount of leg room i have or the ergonomics of that quad the best, definetly gotta get used to it though hahaha
Hopping I can find a raptor 350 for a decent price so I can build it up and ride with you guys by next year.
surprised by the hp number. my 04 rmz 250 made 34hp. My guess would of been 40-42
The bikes always make more power, especially on chassis dynos. Mostly has to do with tuning/components though
I really like the 350 warriors I've had two of them loved them both also had a 350 raptor which I really enjoyed starting to look at the 700 raptors alittle bit
Such a clean, well done build! I’m glad you got it dirty though!
Please revive a 98-06 Honda 300ex, much will be appreciated!! Tryna to do a 330 on mine.
Ass Dyno related: the Z400 has an official power of 28kw (38PS) in Germany.
badass man! I miss my Z400 it was a great quad. im glad this is going to be your "daily"
DAMN YOU SPENT $49K FOR A ATV 🤯🤯🤯
Nah, he spent $17000.00 in parts. He can't count his labor since he didn't bill hours to anybody. He can't bill himself since he'd literally be moving money from his left pocket to his right pocket if he ponied up the cash for labor. He does need a dog though since a shop dog would make the videos more interesting and fun with a shop doggo.
