I wanted to point out that one of my subscribers, @tristan_andrade spotted a mistake I made. In the scene where I cut the gasket for clearance on the pickup coil, it's because I installed it upside down. That gasket probably has that extra material from the factory to prevent people from installing it that way 😂 I get asked a lot how I've learned so much - one of the biggest ways I've learned is from the great viewers that have helped me in the comments over the years. Thanks Tristan, this is definitely going to save me some headache when it comes to starting time and I see there's no spark lol.
@MichaelSabo I need some help. Yz450 timing chain. Trying to remove it and I rounded out the torques head bolt that holds this retainer on. Could I just bend the tab up take the chain out install the new one and bend it back?
What do you think of the outcome? Thanks for hanging in there with me as we finish this bad boy up! Stoked to get this engine on wheels and see if she purrs 😎 You guys all ROOOCK and I hope you have a great end of the week/weekend. If you enjoyed, please consider hitting the like button and subscribing 🤘🤘🤘
I think you do amazing job on everything and really appreciate the time you put into your videos and explaining things, I hope you enjoy your new kx250 and God bless you and your family, please keep on kicking ass brother
@tristan_andrade dude, you're right! I put it in upside down. Thank you lol. Probably would have taken some time diagnosing this when I tried to start it. I bet that gasket is that way to prevent people from putting it in backwards 😂
For a one man show, your videos are just so well edited and easy to watch. Please don't stop making videos!! Just finished restoring my wife's 2003 ltz 400 that her parents bought her brand new back in the day
Man, it's been one of my dreams to own a sport quad and watching you go the extra mile with these restorations makes me so happy. Sport quads need to be preserved before manufacturers inevitably quit making them. You do awesome work! Keep the videos coming! 🤘
You are a better man than me. Can't tell you how many timing plug covers on the Z400 that I've had to use a chisel to get it rotating before removing. Anti-seize and you'll never have to deal with that again - and that cover does NOT have to be put on crazy tight! It is not a common leak spot on the Z.
i love the repaired case dude . i look at welds as art work . that welder is an excellent artist . i like how people will go above and beyond to FIX something and not just buy a new one . welding those cases isnt the first time people have done that .
If I could attack every obstacle in life with the same dedication, intricacy, attitude, and passion that you do these builds I would be unstoppable. Thanks Mike!
Man I’m watching these videos literally the hours they come out and in the past 2 weeks I’ve been working on a different motor every time. You truly do dedicate yourself to these projects and they turn out really really well. I redid a yfz 450 top and bottom end to start. I tore down a Yz 85 top end and rebuilt it and now I’m on my baby, yz450f. Great work man
This one was freaking good! Still working on my YZ 250 resto. Over a year in the making do to costs and having almost no free time. I love that you share the little BS that guys absolutely WILL encounter when wrenching. I just stripped the hardware for my flywheel weight. And it’s the last piece left for the build. Thought the engine was going in the bike today. But instead I’m replacing hardware and tapping threads. It is what it is boys. Keep moving!
Well if you can weld an engine block that have 500+ hp and that holds i would say that the huge 30hp engine will be fine. Michael you do what you do brother. Dont worrie about the negative. It is your build and you are the best man to judge what is good or not for your build. Love the channel. Keep up the good work
If a guy can weld up a 5000hp billet big block Chevy motor, you can most definitely weld up a 30hp quad motor. It’s all about weld prep and preventing warping. Great job saving another one!
This project may have influenced me to pick up my own basket case LT-Z400 about a week ago😅. It had a bad top end and a cracked case, and needs a lot of love in general. Ended up swapping the the busted case bottom end and another disassembled bottom end with a bent rod, but good cases, with some cash or a good bottom end, just waiting on parts to come end to get started throwing it all back together. Can't wait to see how yours comes out, if time and budget allowed I'd love to do a simular build.
Just bought an 02 Honda shadow 750 to rebuild for my pops for Father’s Day. Trying to get him back into riding and come out with me on the road. Super inspired by your builds and even the failures 😂. Glad to know even Mike Sabo is human.

LOVE, LOVE, LOVE your channels Michael! You are one of the greatest finds on the internet for those of us that really enjoy this type of thing! I have 2 questions for you: - Can you please show us the process you go through in Photoshop to take a picture of something and how you are able to change colors of individual parts? - Have you though about incorporating an old Yamaha Snowmobile from the 80's? I really enjoy this channel, I’m relieved that you don’t take out problems that occur along the way. Or the frustration that comes with it. I like this build and can’t wait to see it finished with you.
I prefer this type of raw building compared to the full tutorial. This shows all the misc crap that happens while building instead of everytning of everything going together with no issues. Appreciate your hard and dedication. Much love and respect from a fellow Miker.
I am jealous of a lot of the things Mike does, but this just blew all the others out of the water.. can’t wait till the day I have time to make a lunch like that. The definition of success
Excellent color choices! 👍 that looks gorgeous! Don’t listen to the anti welded case people. I had an old Honda 350X that I had to weld the stator cover where the drive sprocket is located. When finished you could not see the weld. It reminds me of your case. And boy she came out sharp looking. 👀 great work preserving these classic machines.
Hey just thought I’d let you know your videos have got me back into quads recently took a big spell a year ago and was terrified to get back on but your videos and energy have helped me get back into the sport
Nice work on the mighty Zuke Michael.Spent the better part of my youth working at one of the larger Suzuki Dealers in Illinois, also worked at the suzuki tech training center helping teach some of the Repair classes(assistant instructor),During the winter months, good times forsure.keep up the good work,i enjoy watching your content.
Awesome job bro! That engine looks amazing! I started dying when you came out in the morning after saying good night, you’re a funny dude and I really enjoy and appreciate all the work you put into providing us with high quality content. 🤙🏻
Great job staying calm cause I would been throwing wrenches over that timing cap getting seized. Like you said it’s all part of the game. Always have random bumps on the road. Great work Sabo!
Here’s a tip. You can install those engine plugs at the very end after you’ve timed your engine. Because you have to remove them anyways once you’re reading to drop your cams on the head for timing. I even go as far as leaving the stator cover off and flywheel nut loose until I’m 100% perfectly timed because at least in my experience the timing chain likes to fall off the crankshaft sprocket teeth when you’re installing the cylinder
Place the breaker bar paralell to the work bench and then use your weight to push down. Should be easier than trying to pull the bar towards you. Great vids cant wait to see the finished bike, as i have an 06 in my garage
I’ve seen the “red” silicone type u used but noticed it was black so it may be different but the red LEAKS! 3-bond is ALL GOOD FOR ALL non-gasket/gasket (insurance) reeds/intakes etc. mating surfaces. Once u use it and for sum reason have to REMOVE it you will AGREE!!… TO ADD, you should of had Millennium polish the cylinder! It’s so cheap to NOT DO because they do an amazing job
If I'm not mistaken, 3 bond makes the Ecstar, Hondabond and Yamabond products - it's 3 bond 1215 I'm pretty sure. Polished cylinder would be cool but not for the OEM/special edition look I'm going for in my opinion 🤘
Hell yeah it’s getting there. Going to be an awesome looking reliable quad. I feel like videos like yours and others are going to help resurrect the sport quad scene and we’re going to see these coming back to the showrooms. At least that’s the dream. ❤ KTM build 😮
Hey man, I went to go put a side fairing on my R1. Supposed to be a 5 min deal. Somewhere in the process I dropped a little rubber threaded piece that holds the fairing on the top side. I had to take the gas tank off, air box, and get under the wiring harness to recover it. 5 min = 45 min all day
Mike, I'm with you on the case issue, I don't know if you've ever seen taryl fixes all. But he owns a small engine repair shop, and he has to continually tell people he's working on lawn equipment, not a Saturn 5 rocket. I've worked on motors for 25 years, and I can't tell you the number of piles of crap that have been rigged with all kinds of abominations and the blackest oil you've ever seen. Then the owner fires them up, and they purr like a kitten. People have been too conditioned from watching TH-cam that everything needs to be perfect for a motor to run, and that's the furthest thing from the truth. That motor you built is going to not only run well but that case repair will outlast the useful life of the piston and cylinder. Keep up the great work, brother, your kicking ass and taking names.
Mike, you aren't alone in having something go afoul... Love the build so far. Good on you for actually employing a torque wrench as much as you do. Guess you and I are detail oriented and like things done without pulling threads out of everything. On another note, are the head bolts torque to yield? If so, never reuse them, always replace them or go with something on the lines of ARP stud kits. Frankly, I have abandoned the use of TTY bolts and invest in the stud kits since they don't allow head lift to occur under high RPM use. Lovely job, Mr.!!
Hey Mike, I know you’re not too much in the dirtbike scenes but I need opinion anyone’s opinion is helpful but I just got a 2023 KX 230 R in January 2024 and I am now wondering if I should go out and get a pit bike too cause they look bad fun and I want to kind of divide the hours and both bikes so I can get a little bit more life out of both. They are only 1500 each is a good idea? I’m 12 btw
KX230R is a great machine, I almost got one of those instead of my KX250X. I recently started riding dirt bikes weekly - love them. For 1500, definitely the 230 is worth it. No idea on the pit bike, but yes, they're very fun too and great to lend to a friend that wants to ride with you but doesn't have a bike.
Man Michael I really love your video’s of how you are taking the time and pictures and very high quality videoing I’ve had restored a 2003 white and black z400 had BEST TH-camr On platform
Damn dude! Everytime I think you can't raise the bar higher. You always prove me wrong. Ecstar products just show how serious you really are about it. Will you be using Ecstar oil as well? 🔥🔥
@@MichaelSabo Maybe Ecstar for the maiden voyage and switch to amsoil after. Keeps the spirit of the build. Personally, I live and die by Amsoil products.

Great video! Now… let’s talk about when you are going to long travel the blaster!
Love the videos, I ride dirt scooters and have been tuned in since one of the first videos!

🤘🤘
Damn dude! Everytime I think you can't raise the bar higher. You always prove me wrong. Ecstar products just show how serious you really are about it. Will you be using Ecstar oil as well? 🔥🔥
Thank you for the compliment, man! I was going to run my regular Amsoil but I've been thinking to go pure suzuki and run their oil too.
@@MichaelSabo Maybe Ecstar for the maiden voyage and switch to amsoil after. Keeps the spirit of the build. Personally, I live and die by Amsoil products.
Looks sweet
Really enjoyed this one! Thanks🫡
Thanks for watching 🤘
Great. Now after this you better build the blasted
34:05 “I wanna go in and watch The Matrix” 😂
But for real… the emotional damage of something so minor causing so much headache is ALL too real
Lmao, that was real life dude - legit just wanted to be done for the day and watch some TV/eat 😂
