“When a loaf of bread, for instance, is in the oven, cracks appear in it here and there; and these flaws, though not intended in the baking, have a rightness of their own, and sharpen the appetite. Figs, again, at their ripest will also crack open. When olives are on the verge of falling, the very imminence of decay adds its peculiar beauty to the fruit. So, too, the drooping head of a cornstalk, the wrinkling skin when a lion scowls, the drip of foam from a boar’s jaws, and many more such sights, are far from beautiful if looked at by themselves; yet as the consequences of some other process of Nature, they make their own contribution to its charm and attractiveness."

In Ancient Rome many people, especially well educated people, spoke Greek. Marcus Aurelius was certainly well educated, and was likely taught Greek from childhood. I’d guess he was pretty much bilingual, so it probably would have been no big deal for him to write a diary in Greek, especially the kind of material he was writing. However, WHAT he wrote is still astonishing nearly two thousand years later.

    • @truelife1004

Being raised as an emperor he probably spoke many tongues and understood their dialects. Living in the time of the marvels of the arena was like a full movie production produced before his very eyes and he could also wonder beyond, behind the scenes seeing the lions snarl. I rarely loose the word amazing but his life had to be something near amazing indeed.

🍞 I was informed that bread, at a point in the baking process, creates a firm crust. But then... as more n more gas is formed from the yeast action, heat & gaseous pressure seeks a way out - rises upwards - and eventually bursts thru the upper crust.
As this is shown in nature, the build up of pressure deep under the Earth's crust, one day creates a crack and w mighty force bursts upwards, passed the earth's surface...up into the sky.
From a chef's superior knowledge - can these bread cracks ever happen w flat or unleavened bread?

Probably due to the fact that one of his most influential teachers were greek. If you were taught philosophy in greek it's probably the most expressive language for that purpose. And if you are proficient in more than one language you can see notice the slight variation and find it easier to express yourself in certain areas in a certain language. Then we have the inherent differences in languages that make it easier to express certain nuances easier, in said language. Language isn't just a tool to express thoughts, it is thoughts.

I'm not a literature expert but I remember that in the past, including Roman times, writers or even normal people used to write letters to others or to themselves knowing that they could have been "published" or shared. So, if I'm not wrong, I think he was perfectly aware that someone one day could have read those letters and he was consciously putting effort into them.

Aurelius went to great lengths to make sure Meditations would be preserved and observed, he very much intended others to read it

As a bilingual person I can attest to the power of mastering a craft in your second language. It becomes the only way to express some ideas.
Spanish is my first language ; but I cannot speak technically in Spanish after publishing 20 manuscripts in English, doing science in English, coding in English, and learning philosophy in English.
A second language is an alternative way to see the world.

They might not have known why break cracks in the past. Now we know the heat evaporates moisture quickly from the outside causing a rigid outer crust to be formed. This traps moisture inside. When yeast is active it converts sugars to alcohol and CO2. The alcohol evaporates out at a lower temperature (and would be less than 2% by volume). The CO2 build pressure inside of the loaf until the exterior cracks and releases more steam. It also allows the bread to continue to rise upwards.

    From Wiki:
"Marcus Aurelius Antoninus was Roman emperor from 161 to 180 AD and a Stoic philosopher. He was the last of the rulers known as the Five Good Emperors, and the last emperor of the Pax Romana, an age of relative peace, calmness and stability for the Roman Empire lasting from 27 BC to 180 AD"

If I recall correctly, it was thought to understand philosophy it had to be in Greek , mostly because of tradition but there was a view that because philosophy was invented in Greek it had to be thought , not just spoken , in Greek
It was more than just a different spoken language, it was a different culture and way of life/thinking

So, too, the drooping head of a cornstalk, the wrinkling skin when a lion scowls, the drip of foam from a boar’s jaws, and many more such sights, are far from beautiful if looked at by themselves; yet as the consequences of some other process of Nature, they make their own contribution to its charm and attractiveness.”. These were his words, it was more about his observation of nature and it's correlation to the happiness that one can achieve, rather than the scientific reason.
