My son and I were sitting on the beach in the remote Cuban village of Punta de Maisi just last month. We talked of Haiti and Bahia du Mole as we looked off in the distance, knowing that it was only 50 miles away. Cuba is familiar to us, but I have only sailed off the coast of Haiti never thinking of anchoring on my way to the down islands of the Caribbean. Now you have done it and destroyed my faulty perceptions of the people and life in Haiti. I now will go! And have a burger.
Loving the view of Haiti from the eyes of a woman raised in Haiti - Very Nice! We have a dog that is a Maltese as well. She is always so happy when we get home from work. A year separation would be an insane doggie love fest! Lol gain like 5 lbs from the burger week food competition fest - lol so freaking awesome. Fair Winds Uma
I just started watching your channel. Its glad that you showing Ayiti my Motherland. Peace, Love and fair winds on your sails. The Land of High Mountains.
Most humbling to watch such amazing footage, in more ways than one. It makes me wish I had a ship to transport all the goods I get for such a much lower price. Something is wrong, and feel someone is skimming on there own brothers and sisters. So Glad you had this burden to return home, before you both embark on what I believe will be an awesome adventure together. Thank you for your enlightenment. Be safe, be well, with prayers upon you both.
I've been bingeing your channel for a while now, and I have to say your Haiti videos are brilliant. I've been wanting to visit Haiti, a place with such rich history, for years now. Kudos!
As a new subscriber, I've binge watched to this point in two days. I'd like to add that you are awesome ambassadors for Haiti. I have never considered it for a visit, but after watching these steps, it is firmly entrenched on my bucket let.
Lovely pictures of Haiti! Karenaj isn't even named on google maps:-)! Love seeing the sails go up and Uma start to get underway - it's rather magic:-)! Great sailing! Impressive getting the rail under the surface! Will be sure to order some Lambi if I ever make it to Haiti! Burger week sounds awesome and Asu looked lovely! Thanks again for letting us follow you on your adventure!
I’m from Haiti but haven’t been since I was 5 this is pretty cool to live vicariously through you, Karla and I will get our own boat in two years when she is done with her phd, very excited to visit the home land
Thanks, it's true though, most of the news footage you see from Haiti all come from the same 2 places in Port au Prince. There is a large, beautiful country surrounding them, that no one ever shows.
miss you guys glad to see you again your home looks beautiful burgers and all. and when you had your boat and leaned over all the way look pretty exciting hope you have all the fun that's possible in this world today ,then some.
It was nice for me to see the streets near your home again. I worked there for 3 weeks in 1978, we stayed at the Ibo Lele Hotel. Wish we could have seen more of the country... We do enjoy your videos. ( don't let that guy get too pushy :)
Hey Uma - we had a guy comment against your channel on our channel so decided to take a look at you. We love your channel - your vids are amazing so ... we have subscribed. You can thank a poster called Dreamer for that :) Keep up the terrific work :)
Hey guys! Glad to have onboard! We've been following you for awhile now. Yes, we actually got a few emails mentioning the nasty words he was posting about us. We actually blocking him from our channel a few months ago for all the negative, racists and condescending comments he was posting here. Anyway, glad you like our vids. Cheers!
Wow... why would anyone say anything bad / negative about this young couple and their channel? Amazing how some people are just clueless and mean. They are down to earth, genuine, hard working and totally positive plus their channel is entertaining and educational too. I Have travelled to many places as well ... greetings and please continue as you are ⭐️
@Sailing Uma poor Dan having to put up with racist comments about British Columbian's. I'm from British Columbia so I can sympathize. Of course I knew there are racist people but I had no idea it was as bad as it is until after all the protests from the George Floyd murder. Funny seeing the guy in the suit, I imagine commuting to work hanging off the back of the truck. I started watching when you were in the UK and the difficulties you had sometimes because of having a Haitian passport, that would be irritating. I wondered if all Haitians had a strange accent. Kika sounds like she comes from somewhere in British Columbia, or a newscaster from the USA. So now I'm binge-watching from the beginning, after about a week I'm here, episode 48. Love your adventure and living it vicariously.
Great video guys. Kika I hope your Mother is doing better. You must give us the results from Le Burger Week so that one day we visit and know where to get the best burger in Haiti. The drinks looked great, certainly one good looking bar.
I was going through the comments and came across with the catamaran impi, very nice people I have been following them for a while they are more in my age group but you guys are very refreshing as well :)maybe we will see you somewhere after I finish building my cat and putting it into service:) (I will watch all of your postings as I can)
I would love to hear about the country and more about the people of Haiti. Could you do a video about what it is like to live there, the culture, etc..... the real Haiti not what we Americans think it is like?
Hello my friends, I have missed "Sailing Uma" I wished I knew in advance for the Burger week I would of reminded you to pass by Muncheez Pizza & Subs! They have been champions for a couple of years in a row! But I have to say that the presentation of the burgers where you guys went was nice!
Kika is at home having church in the fishing village or eating burgers at a fancy restaurant. She also works and gets nasty. You have a rare gem there, Dan. Treat her right and take care of her. Would love to see some projects for that village.
My first international trip (in my mind, Canada doesn't count because it was only a couple miles away and not much changed across the border when I was younger) was supposed to be to Haiti in 1991....but Jean-Bertrand Aristide was deposed (the first time) just before we were supposed to go and Port-au-Prince didn't seem a wise place to go at that moment...so unfortunately, my trip was cancelled. First trip outside the USA (and Canada) ended up being to Africa in 1994. Love seeing your side of Haiti.
Interesting that our RO water her in Santa Ana, California is 75 cents for five gallons - the same as you paid. Most charming of all the videos I watch!
Uncle Muir The water I was referring to, is RO water that we buy. It tests at between 4 and 12 PPM of suspended particulates. You really cannot get any better than that unless you distill your own.
I am from Panama originally living in the U.S. and my boyfriend is originally from Leogane, Haiti. H taught me how to make Pikliz. Pikliz is not a hot sauce...it is not a liquid. in the sense it can be spicy depending on how much scotch bonnet with seeds you add to it. Pikliz is shredded cabbage seasoned with scotch bonnet peppers, chicken Bouillon seasoning for flavor. It is like the Kimchee of Korea!! You can add scallions and shredded carrots as a variation. You then have it ferment in white vinegar, the longer the better. Goes great with fried fish like talapia or Griot. Learned from
That is so cool. Yep pikliz is very unique indeed and you can store it for a VERY long time. Dan adds it to EVERYTHING. We have a bottle of on our boat that a friend in Haiti made for us while we were over there, and I swear its still full.
We travel to observe, learn, and share. We can all have our personal opinion and preferences and we can help where we can, but we do not judge how people live their lives.
Nice vid. guys Haiti looks pretty much like cuba bring us back memories fro our last visit great idea that map in the sails, and the shots healing wow sweet, damn we are so anxious to get in the water!!
I bet. I remember watching all the sailing porn when we were on the hard. It's the only thing that kept us motivated at times. Glad we can return the favor ;)
Thanks Kevin! Looks like we'll be heading east sooner than we though. We're skipping Cuba for now. But will return there next year. So, sometime this spring, we'll be in Martinique. Hope to see you there!
My buddy and I were just talking about water, rain catchment systems, on board storage of water, showers, how to heat the water, power consumption to heat water and power consumption to make water. How much water do you use, say for showers, cooking, cleaning and drinking? How do you heat water for showers? How much water does your water heater hold? Can you share some info on the subject?
Thanks for asking. Sounds like a good topic for an in depth "answer" on our webpage. www.sailinguma.com/answers. But for now, we don't have a hot water heater. We do plan to install a water catchment system from our deck drains soon. From Miami to Haiti we spent a full 4 weeks without re-provisioning, we used 40G of drinking water and 70G or washing water. I'll let you do the math. Hope that helps!
Thanks. Nice useful data. 5 gallons drinking water a week per person or about 3 quarts a day per person 35 Gallons washing water a week per person, or 5 gallons a day per person. Does the head use salt water?
It's about 50km and takes anywhere from an hour to four hours, depending on traffic. Anchoring in Port au Prince is unsafe and there is no where to easily go to shore. But where we are anchored in Grand Goave is very safe.
Jerry Norris this is before the hurricane, but most of the country wasn't affected. Haiti is a big place. Think about Sandy - new jersey got hit but you could still go to Trenton and see everyday life.
Thanks, but this was all filmed a few weeks before the storm hit. Although, all the areas in this video look exactly the same post hurricane. It was the south west that got hit the hardest (about 200km west of Port au Prince)
So every other sailing channel I've watched cover all the pain of check in and check out ever foreign country, if only to show how easy it is, or not. Is it easy for cruisers to visit Haiti?
Hi from David and Kelly and Miami. Kelli is heading to Port-au-Prince November 10th 11th 12th, bringing supplies down from a non-prophet that benefits the local schools. Will you guys be around?
Cool! I was actually on the phone with the Porta Bote people when your message came in so I read it to them. I told them about your adventure; maybe you can get a free upgrade :-)
If the sauce for the conch was to hot for you as a native Haitian, That would put me in the hospital. Is there talk about the Zika virus down there or they not that aware of it? I was a victim of West Nile virus a few years ago that hit me hard while a lot of people kind of laughed it off and didn't take it seriously. Is there much talk about it in Haiti? I hope your Mother is on the mend, she has a lot to be proud with with you and suspect the rest of your family. She is in my families thoughts.
Yup! It's holding up great. We don't use it much, but have been doing some test and tweaking which will all be added to an upcoming episode all about it.
How long have you been back with Uma? Missed ya'll and hope all is well. We checked the .com you gave us and the uncles have taken it from here. However Italy has been struck hard with 30 earth quakes in one week, the strongest 6.2 and over 10 miles deep. Seems that all the uncles will volunteer. They are ready for the call. They are part of the civil volunteers, made up of people that were Alpine, that is an army term for trained soldiers. young and old. They have served as volunteers and formed the groups, at first on their own, later it became state funded, yet they do not wait for funding, they ready and wait to be called when it is safe to go. We wish you all to be safe and well and know that if wishes were winds, you would always be sailing. Ciao
Sounds like a great initiative. We're actually both still in NYC, this was from our first week in Haiti (about a month ago) It looks like we'll be heading back to Uma next week.
Wonderful, we are going into Milano today to meet up with some other volunteers. Most are in their 70's only a few youngins like myself (50's) lolol we are hoping to be called to help. Be well and know that we haven't forgotten Hati!

Tried to amend my carnivorous habits Made it nearly seventy days Losin' weight without speed Eatin' sunflower seeds Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays But at night I'd have these wonderful dreams Some kind of sensuous treat Not zucchini, fettuccini, or bulgur wheat But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat Cheeseburger in paradise Heaven on earth with an onion slice Not too particular, not too precise I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise Heard about the old-time sailor men They eat the same thing again and again "Warm beer and bread," they say, "could raise the dead" Well, it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn But times have changed for sailors these days When I'm in port I get what I need Not just Havanas or bananas, or daiquiris But that American creation on which I feed Cheeseburger in paradise Medium rare with Muenster'd be nice Heaven on Earth with an onion slice I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise I like mine with lettuce and tomato Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer... ...for my cheeseburger in paradise? Makin' the best of every virtue and vice Worth every damn bit of sacrifice To get a cheeseburger in paradise To be a cheeseburger in paradise I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise I like mine with lettuce and tomato Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer? Sorry I couldn't resist. RIP Jimmy. Also y'all keep doing what y'all are doing. I am learning a lot from y'all.
I would love to take the boat to Haiti when we get that way but so many people are saying how dangerous it is if you don't have contacts there, how true is that?
Sean Sousa I have worked in Haiti many times at the PAP airport and you do have to have a contact. They are showing a small minority in Haiti as the majority sadly is very poor and the streets are very crowded making driving very challenging. It was never dangerous for me since I had a driver take me to and from the airport to my hotel, but as a tourist I would be very leery.
Michael Kerr the vast majority of Haiti is not dangerous. Port au Prince can be, as can be any city, but I've also never had a problem alone taking public transportation and walking. Just be smart. The rest of the country, particularly outside cities is very safe.
Agreed Rob! There are place in PAP that you could get ripped off, maybe your watch and wallet stollen. But, the rest of the country is great! People a generous and friendly. They are eager to help. There are busses, tap taps and moto taxis that will take you anywhere you wish to go. Or, rent a car a drive yourself. Once you get out of PAP, driving is easy, maps are accurate and many people speak enough english to help out if you're lost.
Not sure actually. Though they might be related, I don't think they're baby Queen Conch. They have those here too, but more up north. The little ones we had are abundant here and easy to get a handful in one dive.
You changed my view of Haiti. I would like to visit. Sadly, I have only heard of hardship. Beautiful people.
Love the chart with the boat's path displayed on the sail...very cool effect!
My son and I were sitting on the beach in the remote Cuban village of Punta de Maisi just last month. We talked of Haiti and Bahia du Mole as we looked off in the distance, knowing that it was only 50 miles away. I love how varied your videos are and that you're not afraid to take the road less travelled. Keep them coming.
Nice to see the nice parts of Haiti! The news in the US never shows anything but mud and huts.

I like that map overlay on the sails. Nice touch. 👍🏻
I would like to suggest an UMA logo similarly done on the forward hatch cover. I know you folks work stuff up the to-do list but?
Nice touch with the map on the sail. Brilliant!

Been following you since the beginning. Great content, looks like a awesome transition to the cruising life.
Thanks! Glad to hear it.
Wow, so hot it takes your breath away. Yup, I'm with you, that is so good!
@Sailing Uma poor Dan having to put up with racist comments about British Columbian's. I'm from British Columbia so I can sympathize. Of course I knew there are racist people but I had no idea it was as bad as it is until after all the protests from the George Floyd murder. Agree, would be really nice to see more of Haiti, so beautiful!
Don't worry, we have much more in store!
Another great video. I really like the map overlay onto the sail. Really cool.

I was going through the comments and came across with the catamaran impi, very nice people I have been following them for a while they are more in my age group but you guys are very refreshing as well :)maybe we will see you somewhere after I finish building my cat and putting it into service:) (I will watch all of your postings as I can)
One of your best episodes. I really really enjoyed this episode! :D Thanks
1:05 Brilliant use of the sail there!!!
We enjoy seeing how it's like in Haiti, great.....great video👍
Man them burgers looked so good. Im glad you got to see your family and your dog. Happy trails:)
I am so glad to see you guys out cruising Safe travels my friends. Maybe soon we can share an anchorage.
I would love to hear about the country and more about the people of Haiti. Could you do a video about what it is like to live there, the culture, etc..... the real Haiti not what we Americans think it is like?
We'll do our best! We have at least 6-8 more steps planned while we're hear. Hopefully that will give you a good picture of what it's like here.
Hehe, niska means "neck" in Finnish. Love from Finland!
Hello my friends, I have missed "Sailing Uma" I wished I knew in advance for the Burger week I would of reminded you to pass by Muncheez Pizza & Subs! They have been champions for a couple of years in a row! But I have to say that the presentation of the burgers where you guys went was nice!
+Dimitri Fourcand Muncheez was the first one we tried! We order out, but still quite tasty. A little on the spicy side though.
lol
Found your channel from a nice comment on another sailing Vlog. Great quality videos you create.
Thanks. Glad to have you! Cheers.
Kika is at home having church in the fishing village or eating burgers at a fancy restaurant. She also works and gets nasty. You have a rare gem there, Dan. Treat her right and take care of her. Would love to see some projects for that village.
welcome back we missed you
gotta love a burger served on wood slab yummie.. maybe more people will visit Haiti

LOVE the branded bun (Le Burger - ASU). Never thought about and never seen it done before.
Interesting that our RO water her in Santa Ana, California is 75 cents for five gallons - the same as you paid.
Most charming of all the videos I watch!
The water that they bought is is probably safer than O.C.'s water. Just remember it all starts up the Santa Ana River.
Uncle Muir The water I was referring to, is RO water that we buy. It tests at between 4 and 12 PPM of suspended particulates. You really cannot get any better than that unless you distill your own.
I agree it is safe to drink but it still has a strange taste to me. My house in Newport we get by with PUR filters and that helps a lot.
thank you for sharing.
I gotta try lombi one day! That's definitely going on my bucket list 😁
Super yum! you'll love it. Try to watch them make it for you, it's quite the ordeal.

The people there are really sweet..!
I want one of those drinks!
that old heavy chevy van has a very heavy duti frame compared to most trucks, so it will be good to go.
You left us hanging .... who won Burger Week? 😊
Hey guys...haven't seen any updates on how your electric drive is working out. Could you consider an update in a future video? Thanks :)
Started watching from Step 1, wondering if you will get a watermaker. I'm going to guess it will be before Step 100, we will see.
My buddy and I were just talking about water, rain catchment systems, on board storage of water, showers, how to heat the water, power consumption to heat water and power consumption to make water. sweet puppies!!
Good video guys! Liked seeing your home town. You said you had to find a ride back to UMA, How far away was it from your parents home?
It's about 50km and takes anywhere from an hour to four hours, depending on traffic. Anchoring in Port au Prince is unsafe and there is no where to easily go to shore. But where we are anchored in Grand Goave is very safe.
Thanks, as we travel that way I was interested in your anchorages. We will be heading that way in about a year.
Sounds good. We'd love to help you out if we can.
2:14 anyone know what kind of fish that is?
Nice video was this looks like it was before the hurricane
Jerry Norris this is before the hurricane, but most of the country wasn't affected. Haiti is a big place.
Think about Sandy - new jersey got hit but you could still go to Trenton and see everyday life.
Yup! Matthew hit almost 200 km west of here.
So glad to see you and your family are safe from Matthew.

Is it easy for cruisers to visit Haiti?
what size and type of anchor chain do you have? Thanks!
We go over all that in our "Ground Tackle" video
Sailing Uma
Thanks
Replay....just to see Aza....cute!
hahaha thats one lazy pup in the end
Can you please tell me where is this Restaurant ASO is located? & What town is the Caribbean market was?
Hi from David and Kelly and Miami. Kelli is heading to Port-au-Prince November 10th 11th 12th, bringing supplies down from a non-prophet that benefits the local schools. Will you guys be around?
Yes, we should be back by then. Let us know where you'll be staying and we can meet up sometime. It would be great to see you again!
That would be awesome! Are you guys still liking your Porta Bote? I am thinking about getting one. Any advice?
Yup! Love it! Any of the problems with ours have been fixed with newer models. Particularly the ones with a folding transom.
Cool! I was actually on the phone with the Porta Bote people when your message came in so I read it to them. I told them about your adventure; maybe you can get a free upgrade :-)
Ha! That would be sweet! Ours is looking a little ratty.
Wow you guys. Is it a regular thing that they don’t have electricity?
Sometimes. Most houses have solar and a genset to cover those times the power goes out.
wheres the new videos?? :( missin you guys!
I want to meet AZA!!
Aza is so cute!
Je voudrais visiter Haiti. Quand est Le Burger Week?
What is that Aza is playing with? It looks like a raspberry....(?)
She is in my families thoughts.
nice job dipping the rail in the water... :-)
How is the electric engine working? Charging well etc?
Why are store prices so high?
I hope you will be brave and show some of the "other" Haiti.

+mrdudeguyburvis I love it!!
Tried to amend my carnivorous habits
Made it nearly seventy days
Losin' weight without speed
Eatin' sunflower seeds
Drinkin' lots of carrot juice and soakin' up rays
But at night I'd have these wonderful dreams
Some kind of sensuous treat
Not zucchini, fettuccini, or bulgur wheat
But a big warm bun and a huge hunk of meat
Cheeseburger in paradise
Heaven on earth with an onion slice
Not too particular, not too precise
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise
Heard about the old-time sailor men
They eat the same thing again and again
"Warm beer and bread," they say, "could raise the dead"
Well, it reminds me of the menu at a Holiday Inn
But times have changed for sailors these days
When I'm in port I get what I need
Not just Havanas or bananas, or daiquiris
But that American creation on which I feed
Cheeseburger in paradise
Medium rare with Muenster'd be nice
Heaven on Earth with an onion slice
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise
I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer...
...for my cheeseburger in paradise?
Makin' the best of every virtue and vice
Worth every damn bit of sacrifice
To get a cheeseburger in paradise
To be a cheeseburger in paradise
I'm just a cheeseburger in paradise
I like mine with lettuce and tomato
Heinz 57 and French fried potatoes
Big kosher pickle and a cold draft beer
Well, good God Almighty, which way do I steer?
Question is lambi baby queen conchs???
Not sure actually. Though they might be related, I don't think they're baby Queen Conch. They have those here too, but more up north. The little ones we had are abundant here and easy to get a handful in one dive.
