Ep 34: Sailing single-handed from New York to the Azores

- From New York I set off single-handed towards South Africa. My first stop are the Azores and after 21 days and 2368 nm I reach Horta. This sailing cruise is affected by the Gulf Stream, but is also characterized by strong winds and calms. As always, I give a good insight into my weather navigation. Of course, I still have no idea that I have embarked on the last big voyage with my Jambo, which will sink in the South Atlantic just over 2 months later.
Enjoy the video!

You know what would be great, a long, like 2 hour video of just waves. Sounds relaxing.
Oh Martin…I have not watched a single video of yours since your devastating live news some months ago. The love, attention and preparation that you put into Jambo was immeasurable. Now though knowing that you have found a new boat, I feel I can watch Jambo sailing for her last few weeks. Fair winds and good luck with your new expedition boat 👍⛵️👍
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
Great watch. I admire your calmness in the face of the many challenges in the open ocean. Well done and bon voyage.
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
We will do this someday, my wife and I. Inspired by folks like you. Thanks for the gift of Inspiration. Gruss Gott!
Thank you very much and best regards 😀⛵⛵
Coffee on …sit back …and enjoy 🎉🎉🎉
😀⛵⛵
Really enjoy just listening to you talk - you have a great positive attitude!
Thank you very much 😀⛵️⛵️
Well done Martin epic trip as usual hopefully you are well on with the search for a new Jambo.
Thank you very much! Yes, we found a new boat, an Amel Mango 😀⛵⛵

What a beautiful looking boat Martin I look forward to your journey continuing 🏆scott
Hi Martin. Nice to se you again 😎👨✈️
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
I had to read the news twice of jambos loss.
Such a great boat. She carried you a ross tge oceans a few times now. The epoc crossing from caribbean to home was my favorite. Good luck with the new boat. Will be watching with anticipation of the last remaining episodes. Glad you are safe
Thank you very much 😀⛵️⛵️
Hello Martin, it‘s been the first time watching your video in english, but it was as exciting as in german. Many thanks, and I‘m looking forward to see further videos, espacially with your new boat Amel Mango 😀👍 Kind regards Ulf
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
Hello Martin. I admire the guys like you. Sailing the Atlantic is not a minor task. Wonderful video. Congrats from Chile.
Thank you very much and best regards to Chile 😀⛵⛵
You are a very brave man! Stay safe!🙏👏👍🇸🇪
Lite för vågat för min del, men visst vore en atlantresa intressant med motorbåt.
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
Good to see you sailing again
Great vids. If you ever fell over tethered to a stay, your be dragged to your death if you were alone. Object of a jack line is to keep you from going over the stantion
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Glad to see you on the seas again. Stay afloat lol. Cheers
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Fantastic, a happy Easter! Thanks for sharing.
Thank you very much and Happy Easter 😀⛵⛵
Sad to hear the loss of Jambo😢
Master sailor Martin. Thanks for sharing. Best regards from Jarle
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
Great video as always!
Thanks a lot 😀⛵⛵
Hallo aus Finnland. This came as a suggested video, so I clicked on it.
So good to see you again, Martin!
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Thank you
My pleasure😀⛵⛵
you are lovely, I admire your spirit and smile ; )
Thank you very much😀⛵⛵
Very professional editing and incredibly enjoyable .
Thank you very much and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
wunderbar!
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
Missed you
Martin, another great ocean voyage. A little disappointed you didn't go a little farther north to Nova Scotia (my sailing grounds) maybe another time. Good luck and fair winds, heading south to Africa my friend. Cheers.
Thank you very much. Unfortunately, the northern route was not supported by the wind. Maybe next time. Fair winds 😀⛵️⛵️
Tolle Bilder
Vielen Dank 😀⛵⛵
When you arrive in Brazil, go to Marina Itajaí next to the Camboriú resort, a beautiful place
Thank you 😀⛵⛵
I wish I knew you were in NYC…I would have loved to meet you.
😀⛵⛵
Your looking your contented self again , Do you prefer the solent to a smaller staysail to the second spreader ? Horta , Good memories in the 70s , Good Brandy & whale chasing .
I think the size of the jib is good, just to the mast. The brandy in Horta is still good. Thank you and kind regards 😀⛵⛵
Hi Martin sorry for your loss . That’s one hell of a change Bavaria to an Amel mango ?
Thank you very much. Yes, it is. Much more robust, skeg hung rudder etc. I don't want to find myself in a liferaft again 😀⛵⛵
What sleep/watch schedule do you keep when single handing on long crossings?
As always, great story telling and production!
At the ocean I sleep in intervalls of 3 hours. Thank you very much 😀⛵⛵
Any idea how they forecast Gulf Stream currents?
In one clip you appear to have a preventer rigged with 3 wraps around the boom and later only one loop. Would love to hear your thoughts about preventers
I just get the forecast for the currents, but do not know the methodology behind.
I always use a line and tie it to the boom to prevent the boom moving rapidly to the other side and preventing that the boom breaks. Best regards 😀⛵⛵
Hey Jambo. Congrats for Atlantic crossing. Got a question. Can you give me the details of that small crane at the stern of your boat that appears to be for the outboard engine? I’m looking for something similar. Thanks.
Thank you! The little crane is from Plastimo. Here is the link to the product of a German online shop:
www.svb24.com/en/plastimo-board-crane-up-to-35-kg.html
Best regards 😀⛵⛵
Thanks Jambo. Top man. Safe journey!
Hello Martin. Do you have any spare/extra steering? Best regards Håkan, Sweden.
Thank you. Yes, I have a spare motor. Hence, if that fails I can replace it. However, if all has a break down I would use a forces in the sails to steer. Basically, in a downwind situation the forces in the genoa line versus the forces in a bungee and that is steering. I showed it in the vidoe of my first Atlantic Crossing. Beating the wind just requires to fix the the steering wheel in the right position. 😀⛵⛵
th-cam.com/video/cRPODvp9xbU/w-d-xo.html
At about 19:30 into the video I see what looks like a line wrap around the boom. Is that some sort of gybe preventor?
Yes, that is the line to prevent the boom moving to the other side as I don't have a real preventer. 😀⛵⛵
👍
What type of sailboat did you get ?
Great channel Martin
Thank you very much. We bought an Amel Mango. The little introduction video is already published in German (last upload). The English version is coming soon as well. I am currently working on it. Kind regards 😀⛵⛵
@@mjambo697 thank you Martin
Well, I have sailed in 1982 from Stocholm to New York and back with a much smaller yacht Marieholm 26. While on the other side of Atlantic I cruised Caribbean half a year. I say that with modern navigation electronics that is not an adventure at all. It is just offshore sailing. I used paper maps and sextant and cronometer. Nothing else. And I was alone. That was an adventure.
😳😳😬😬👍👍👍👏👏👏🏆🏆🏆
Prove it! Hahahahaha
Only just found this channel... and seen the comment about losing the boat in the South Atlantic.. Where can I find some information on the boat? It looks thoroughly well prepared and capable.. It's both your home and your life-support system.. I'd like to know why you chose it. I have maybe 50,000 miles in my logbook having been a professional skipper in my early days, boats and equipment have evolved massively over the past 5 decades. Where can I find more information on the boat and how you lost it? Many thanks.. JG
It is a Bavaria 34. Details can be found on my website. Unfortunately, it is in German, but Google translator can help:

"Of course, I still have no idea that I have embarked on the last big voyage with my Jambo, which will sink in the South Atlantic just over 2 months later."
Oh, good grief!!!
Schöne Aufnahme❤. Was ist das fur eine alarm?
Vielen Dank! 😀⛵⛵
Nice video, but how do you sleep if you sail by yourself?
Thank you! I allow my body to sleep as demanded. Predominately, I sleep during the night, but also when I am tired during the day. In total I catch more hours of sleep at sea as at home, but in intervals of 30 min to 3 h depending on the traffic.
Actually, that is also called polyphasic sleep and should not be too bad. Chrsitiano Ronaldo does it 5 times per day in intervals of 90 mins.
Fair winds 😀⛵⛵
The best voyages are undertaken without drama or exaggeration, this one is matter of fact. Fron what I read in the comments, the real drama will appear in your future episode. Thank you.
Thank you😀⛵⛵
Hello mister, well done ! What is the boat model and the size ?
It is a Bavaria 34 with 10.7 m length, made in 2008. Best regards 😀⛵⛵
@@mjambo697 happy with your bavaria ? I've planned to buy one soon.
Actually, the boat sunk 6 months ago in the South Atlantic and I bought an Amel Mango.
@@mjambo697 sunk ????? What was the problem ? Did you hurt something ?
@@mjambo697need a video on that Martin please 😊🎉
Jambo sank 😢😢😢
Martin... why are you not FISHING??
I did, but with not much luck. In the next episode I have more luck.
Have you a new boat now?
Yes, Amel Mango😀⛵⛵
@@mjambo697 The mango is comparable to a maramu, but slightly larger. The difference between a mango and super maramu depends, since later mango’s can also have electrical furling and the bowthruster. Aside from that, the mango has a regular propshaft (+) and a different hullshape, especially aft. systems are 12v.
Prices of Mango’s are more favorable. In general many features of the mango are also present in the super maramu.
Good luck with your choice,
@@mjambo697congrats whit that beautiful big boat. When you are in Holland i happily will vist you.
How did jambo sink ?
😮 how? Really?

You said nothing about the fish you caught.
Just the smal one, which went back into the water
