When I was a kid, in 1971 Johnny won the Southern Open at Green Island CC in Columbus, Ga., my hometown. He was paired w my dad in the pro am. The team won, my dad had his only hole in one, then Johnny won the tournament. For many years after that, during Southern open week, he would come to our house for dinner a few days before the event. What a super nice guy he was.

Johns the best. What I love more than anything is that he doesn't talk for 20 minutes explaining every tiny detail to just show he's an expert. He delivers the message fast with no pretense. People that take 15 minutes to tell the story really have no idea how to really play and the long interactions are just for show. It's difficult to change more than one thing at a time in golf.

Johnny is the absolute best ever for getting a swing thought across to us amateurs. It just always resonates with me and he makes it as simple as possible. He is so so much better than all of these "great teachers" combined.

I am right handed and on my downswing I only actively use my entire right side and finish perfectly with the weight on my left foot . To me the left side is passive and at 69 I love the results. The other thing I no longer cock my right hand in the same manner as my left . Cocking or hinging both hand in the same direction is a swing killer for me. The right hand hinges back as if you are preparing to slap someone on the face; not in the manner of hammering a nail as some teachers are now suggesting. Do you agree?

The actual biomechanical sequence starts with a slight side bending of spine to the right at the start of the backswing which causes the mass in the body to shift laterally to the target at hip level (the point of least resistance) causing a “posting” the lead leg (i.e. making it more vertical) and causing it to bear more weight and become the axis of rotation for the pelvis during the downswing.
The lateral shift of the hips to target pulls the backwards bend out of the lead leg which frees the hips to fire open and drag upper body lagging by 45° pinning the lead arm tighter across the chest. That lead arm acts like the lever arm of Trebuchet, with the shaft of the club acting like the sling and the club head the projectile in the swing. The better a golfer can ‘connect’ the lead arm to upper chest, which creates the fulcrum for the lead arm mass to pivot on and contributes to its springing off the chest, the faster the lead arm will fly off the chest accelerating the club head much faster than the shoulders move.
The left shoulder is the pivot point for the lead arm and how it is moved in 3D space relative to the point of rotation and balance between the heels in the downswing influences what direction the lead arm flies off the chest as it releases. Ideally the considerable mass in the lead arm should fly down and left with the same amount of force trying to pull the club head out to the right in the inside-out swing path so the net effect is the club head to tracking straight down the target line in the finish.
Through impact as the trail arm straightens it starts bearing the force of the swinging club and once the club force is allowed to pull it straight the right shoulder becomes the axis of rotation for the swinging club and where it is in 3D space relative the point on the ground the entire body rotates around becomes critical for controlling club head path in the finish. That’s why tossing balls at the ground near the front foot is a really good drill for beginning golfers to do to both gain a conscious understanding of the cause and effect of extending the trail arm down the target line and programming the subconscious brain to do the correct actions automatically.
You will find if you experiment with this cause and effect as I have, the lifting of the trail foot in the downswing is a critical variable because as long as the back foot stays grounded the hip turn is restricted by the resistance created by the front foot and leg to about 45° open. In the downswing the hips move laterally toward the target and turn open at the same time until meeting that resistance, which quite literally feels like the lead hip hitting a wall if the back foot is kept down. Watch all the great ball strikers in frame-by-frame and you will see a very controlled lifting and turning of the back foot in the downswing just before impact which is what allows the hips to “break through” the wall (i.e. not get stopped completely) at which point they keep rotating.
That is also the point in the swing where the shoulders turn back to parallel with swing line and the mass of that lead arm pinned across the chest is finally able to fly off and where good ball strikers will increase the amount of side bend in their spines which forces trail shoulder down and lead shoulder up and moves trail shoulder close to the swing line which what causes the trail arm to straighten down it towards the target as in the side-arm ball toss drill.
The side bend action that all good ball strikers have and those with poor swings lack is critical for keeping the trail shoulder back behind the ball position and moving laterally towards target in the downswing (not whipping around the feet) when the club head mass starts pulling the trail arm straight.
Remember the mass in the lead arm wants to fly off to the left, the club head mass to the right and what keeps the club head tracking straight down the target line is actually the mass of the trail arm being thrown down the target line with side bend action, very much like the biomechanics of skipping a stone over the surface of a pond with a sidearm throw.
My downswing thought is the same as in the ball toss drill, aiming the palm of my trail hand down at the ball and then side bending so the trail arm extends in the direction I want the ball to fly, parallel to the line my heels are on.

Johnny was a gifted player and his ball striking was aided by the FACT that he is left handed which is a huge benefit for delaying the hit. I believe moving your spine ahead of the ball and moving out of your center early may not work for most.

      @johnmanheimer8006 4 ปีที่แล้ว

@@nadiayvonnerazanajao7082 Thank you for offering your thoughts! One thing I have learned is that the proper preset is 95% of good ball striking and 90% of the preset is the GRIP. If you don't grip it properly you will NOT recruit the proper muscles that are needed to hit well and consistently. You Must be under the pad in your left hand (For righty players, opposite for left handers) and in the fingers of the right hand....also, hold the club the way your hands hang naturally at your side which varies by player. Then waggle the club which will ease TENSION, after that, your inner clock will ignite the start of the LEFT shoulder, and that, will help you achieve the proper sequence to the swing without having to think about it. Check out Carl Lohren's book, "ONE MOVE TO BETTER GOLF" Mr. Lohren knows more about the golf swing than any man alive according to Mr. Deane Beman and many other top players like Lee trevino, Chi Chi, and scores of many other Professional and accomplished Amateurs, as while as, thousands of golfers of all skill levels. Best to you, JM

I think it would have been helpful for the common golfer to explain that the move that brings the shoulder to the initial position SHOULD NOT be done with the shoulder... Should be done by ensuring that the weight is transferred to the left side using the lower body until the shoulder reaches the said position. It is a good advice that will have a lot of rookie golfers pulling over the top unless it is done right.

You were an incredible player Johnny and one of my favorites of all time, but you never taught golf for a living. If you had you would know that this tip will not help anybody play better golf. 99% of these people did not learn to play golf when they were a child as you did. They will never learn to move as you did to hit great golf shots. Fortunately, if they want an easier way they will search for the Setup 4 Impact golf swing. The easiest way to setup and swing a golf club. If you setup close to where you need to be at impact it will make the game a whole lot easier.

Actually, The Setup 4 Impact golf swing is helping golfers play better golf without having to spend thousands of hours practicing. Just setup closer to where you will be at impact and you too can improve almost instantly.

garyt1957 Is Johnny an instructor now? I was not aware that he makes his living that way. If so then I will remove the post. I have never posted on an Instructor's video. I thought he was a TV commentator.

Kirk, keep on selling your "Moe" method - Miller gives one tip to reach a solid impact position - if Moe Norman could have done this, instead of his extreme arms-only swing, he might have had something better than a driving range only swing. Stay on the Moe band wagon Kirk - his playing record shows how ineffective his swing was - think I'll stick with Johnny's much better swing.

+ ed chapman - Yea like we are going to go back to the Moe Norman "Natural Golf" craze to re-invent the wheel. Also we might as well get a new set of all same length clubs to complete the transition.

This, and say 'John-ee MILLER' while you swing. No kidding, try it!

Sometimes when I swing I feel like I'm twisting my back, and it's going to the left
