Navratri festival is celebrated with great devotion and enthusiasm in the temple. Saptashringi is a site of Hindu pilgrimage situated 60 kilometers from Nashik in the Indian state of Maharashtra. According to Hindu traditions, the goddess Saptashrungi Nivasini dwells within the seven mountain peaks. (Sapta means seven and shrung means peaks.)The Marathas and some Bhil tribes worship the goddess for a long time and some worship her as their kuldaivat. There are 510 steps to climb the gad. Devotees visit this place in large numbers every day.[1] The temple is also known popularly as one of the "three and a half Shakti Peethas" of Maharashtra. As per Wikipedia, It is believed that the holy Hindu sage Markandeya lived in the fort and punished the Bhimasur and other demons who were attacking Bhramin priests. The Rashtrakutas issued various grants to the place called Mayur Khndi. This fort served as an outpost. In 1639 the Mughal commander Aliwardikhan won the fort along with the neighboring forts.[2] In the first week of October 1670 Shivaji while retreating from Surat after the loot was intercepted by the Moghul forces led by Daudkhan near Kanchan-Manchana forts. The Moghuls suffered a sizeable loss in the battle. On 25 October 1670, Moropant Pingale moved to the Nashik region and captured Aundha fort, Trymbakgad fort, Patta Fort, Ravlya, Jawlya, and Markandya. After the death of Shivaji Maharaj, the fort was again captured by the Moghuls. The Peshwas kept a garrison on the hill.[1] The fort was captured by Captain Briggs of East India company in 1818.
There are many forts in the mountain range starting from the Saptashrungi fort in the Nashik district. Saptashringigad, Markandya, Ravalyajavalya, Dhodap etc. Forts come in this mountain range. Markandya fort is located on the hill in front of Saptashrungi fort. In ancient times, Markandeya sages lived on a hill separated by a ravine from the forts near Saptashringi gad and Rawalya. Therefore, this hill and its fort are known as Markandeya Fort.
