Thank You!! I’m 6 weeks in and starting seeds over. Thank You for this info! Now I know why mine didn’t make it. Thank You! I’m excited for my future success!
I’ve been growing all my veg starts for over 15 years and just got into cut flowers. I have been enjoy your videos. This came up next after the snapdragon video and figured why not have it play in the background while working. Excellent info for any new growers out there. There was some good videos but not much when I started. Keep it up. New Subscriber from Canada (zone 3).
Perfect timing, my seeds are starting to come up - so exciting!! Iam starting flower seeds in a bright corner window with heat mats. My first batch of sprouts are leggy, these are the trailing Nasturtium. The past couple of weeks we've seen more gray days than blue so maybe that is contributing to the reach for light. Thanks Amanda for addressing what to expect after the seeds sprout. Your channel is GROWING!! YEA!!
Vermiculite will help tremendously. Mix in the seedling mix, and/or sprinkle a thin layer on top and mist it so it doesn't blow away. Make sure you have air flow, but not too much, and not all the time. 👍👍 Been growing plants my entire life, still making the same mistakes, and all new ones! Best of luck!! Keep on growing!!!
I understand that we need to place a humility dome when we begin germinating the seeds. How should I manage it? Should I slightly open the holes or leave them closed? The process has always confused me. I'm grateful to have discovered your channel. Thank you for sharing your knowledge. 💖
You should vent it, unless it's very cold in your house or the air is very very dry. It gets vented even more when the first seedlings popped up, then removed entirely and given some soft airflow.
@@RealBradMiller When I checked them in the morning the humility dome is wet. That is the reason, I was confused if I should open the vents. Some of the seeds are already germinated. Thank your advice.
I usually leave mine closed and then remove as soon as they germinate. But it’s different for everyone … if you have only a couple of seedlings germinated and want more to do so, then venting it helps control the humidity while you are waiting for the rest to germinate.
Thank you for this video. I want to try starting some seeds. I think you do a really great job with your tutorial videos. You explain the process well, cover question areas; and you are an excellent encourager.
Wow, this was so incredibly helpful Amanda! I'm in zone 6b & started my lisianthus a few weeks ago. Germination has been really good but you answered so many questions for me. Thank you.
your sister turned me onto your channel for gardening. I am SO GLAD I watched you. I have lost so many seedlings in the past 9 years of my gardening. My husband and I built a fenced in garden to keep out the deer so them won't eat the plants. I also have issues with not producing enough fruits and veggies each grow season.
Love hearing firsthand knowledge on a such an important and overlooked topic! Where I live, we only have about 110 frost free days so many things spend weeks to months indoors , with 1 or 2 re-pots, before they go out. My tom developed visible magnesium deficiency after 2 months . The seedling mix is truly for seedlings only!
Thank you for going over this! I'm just starting to grow from seed again. Tried it before without much success probably because I was overwatering. Now I know what to look for. ❤
Really enjoyed this video. Starting my first round of indoor seeds this weekend. Trying begonia seeds for the first time so we will see...... To adjust keeping the seed trays close too the light I use those produce crates/boxes that you can get free at Costco that come in different sizes and heights. Turn them upside down and they are sturdy. Nothing fancy but it works great:-)
Amanda, your videos are awesome. You are really appreciated for all the information you provide. This video was really necessary because it is really difficult to find information on this specific growing part.
Thank you this was very helpful. I have had some issues with damping off and some seeds not germinating but overall I'm pleased with the outcome. I'm in zone 9b SW Florida I started my seeds indoors at the end of August for my fall and winter garden. The garden is doing very well and I've had a pretty good transition rate from my seedlings into my raised beds. I do vegetable gardening so right now in my zone I'm growing cool weather crops. Happy gardening in 2024 😊
Thanks Amanda, I feel better now . I’m struggling with seed starting this year! The wind did a number on my winter sowing jugs but my micro greens failed to germinate in my greenhouse. That’s never happened before! I feel better after seeing some of your seed starting mishaps. Thank you
Oct 11 2024. Thank you for sending this to me from another comment in another video! Yes, you are correct, this answered my questions. I now see my mistakes. As always, thank you for the info you give us. You are the best teacher in gardening I watch.
@@shesamadgardenerThanks for the video. I'm going to start with seeds in 2025. I have dahlias, zinnias, poppies, daisies, Irish moss, sheep grass, and some sweet peas. I'll see how I do with those seeds. Your video is super good, thank you very much.
Thank you so much for this amazing video!!!!! You answered so many of my questions and helped me feel better about starting my new journey of sowing seeds indoors.....
This was a super great video you addressed and touched on a lot of issues I’ve been having I just started this year raising petunias from Seed and growing other flowers.
Up until last year, I used seed starting mix when planting seeds. Most youtubers stress using it. However, the last couple of years I started using a good fine potting mix. Seeds sprout great and the potting soil has a lot of nutrients and fertilizer to feed new seedlings.
I've gailed with eggplants 3 years in a row. I am starting using a heat mat this year. I am hoping that works. Also, I started pepper seeds on a heat mat 2 weeks ago . When we've gotten pepper plants to grow, they almost never produce mature fruit due to time running out. Crazy since we live in E TN zone 7a. Peas are also a problem here with the erratic weather heat/cold. Great information! Shared to social media.
Darn about the pepper plants … can you start them from seed earlier? Or over winter the pepper plants inside like I did so you can start with a more mature plant?
Thank you so much for this video! I am in the same area and tried this last year with exciting seedlings but no clue from there. Unfortunately all perished from dampening! This was sooo helpful and I don't feel as apprehensive about starting again. Thank you!❤
AMANDA!! You saved my life 😊 1st year doing seeds and my results were good so far but I have to - move the seedlings closer to the light - get them out of standing water - put a fan in there - take the heating mated aways after they germinated - stop using the humidity covering - liquid fertilizer THANK YOU💚💚💚💚
New gardener > 1 yr great infor on removing seedlings from heat mat once they sprout 🙄 wondered why the got leggy and eventually died 😁🌱 And I've watched 100s of vid on gardening last 2 yrs. 😍 Zone 8a GA
Great vedio! I'm trying indoor seed growing this year. Starting small with onion seeds. I have just one small grow light. I don't really know what I'm doing! It actually is making me nervous. 😮 I want it to succeed to prove I can do it. You are so helpful. Thank you😊
Thank you thank you !!!! My dahlias sprouted and was leggy so will be moving them closer to the light. I have fish emulsion but need to get better at feeding them. Thank you so much. I too was looking for how to care for the seedlings.
GREAT video! Thanks for sending me the link! And yah, my classic over watering problem definitely manifested as yellowish seedlings, but also they just SAT. I am assuming that was because their roots didn't get enough oxygen. Better luck on my next round--coming up soon!
Good info thanks! I am in zone 5b so your info is timely for me as I get to see the info before I need it! One thing - just FYI - it is Damping off not Dampening off🙂. Keep up the good work!
I always struggled with dampening off. Then I had a seed (I don't recall what) that recommended vermiculite on the soil. I had to buy this giant bag, so I started using it on all of my seeds. I haven't lost a seedling to dampening off since!! Other things yes 😂 but not that!
Thank you for sharing. Just got into starting seeds inside and have been struggling with dampening seedlings. So excited to see them sprout but then lose them within a week. All say to not let them dry out but looks like I am watering too much even in my bottom watering tray. I will try your suggestion of leaving it for an hour or two then dumping off the excess water. Please keep sharing.
I started some zinnias and they did great for about ten days and then they stopped growing. They look OK but they're not getting anywhere, no growth in about three days... I think it's an overwatering problem, so I turned on the ceiling fan (like you suggest near the beginning!). Hopefully they will start growing again soon! I was always planning on starting them in successions, so I'm not too fussed if the first set doesn't work out. I can't stand thinning out, so I just start one seed per cell - if it doesn't germinate, I put a seed from a really easily identified plant in the unsuccessful spot. Usually a lettuce of some sort. My other trick is, I start more plants than I need so I can prune most of them but leave one of each variety unpruned for fast flowers/fruits! It's the best of both worlds and I can pull the early producer (if it even made it into the garden) to reclaim the space and direct sow or transplant something in that spot once the regular crop starts to come in.
Alot of useful info. I have not had much success adding a thin layer of vermiculite to the top of any seeds. I've seen that done in videos from the UK so tried it myself w/o success. Off topic but what's happening with what looks like small poinsettias on the shelf behind you? While watching you, I get distracted with curiosity about those poinsettias which don't seem to change in size?😅
My seedlings are mostly doing really well so far. I’ve lost a few here and there, but not whole batches yet. Well, except for some columbine that didn’t germinate, but they were old seeds so I knew it was a crapshoot.
Great video! This is my first time starting from seed and I realized I don’t know what I’m doing. This video is very helpful. Side note what are the red plants to your right on the second shelf. They’re beautiful.
When you cut the seedlings back can you put the cut ones in soil to root and have more? I have noticed on occasion when I do that it works..and so more plants lol... I love your videos.. I look forward to them every day ❤
wondering if your begonias failed because you didnt pre moisten the growing medium? this would have allowed you to control the moisture level better. Think you over saturated and then compounded that by placing a humidity dome on top. I'm about to start my begonias here in zone 5b. I've always had success using a sterile seed starting mix, no mold issues. Wonderful video and great info.
Thank you for this very informative video. I tried seeds last year - I don’t want to say for the first time, but it was definitely the first time that I sowed more than one variety and the first time I had any real hope of anything growing. It was an abysmal failure across the board. I figured I was just doomed to only growing what the garden center had to offer. Now, I feel like I can try again with a little more knowledge and maybe get a better outcome. I don’t have any room in my house to start seeds or grow indoors (and the garage is a nightmare) but I do have a glass greenhouse outside. I have a propane heater in there for the really cold nights, but I usually can only manage to keep it around 50 degrees max. Do you think if I set up grow lights out there and do the best I can around 50 degrees (with heat mats for germination) that it would work? Otherwise, I’m going to have to wait a little longer … plus my greenhouse is currently stuffed with my tropical plants for winter.
It’s worth a try but perhaps winter sowing might be a better route for you. Try looking up easy winter sowing on TH-cam … it’s super easy and ideal for those that don’t have room inside or grow lights.
Are you aware of any good websites that have a list of best flowers/perennials/annuals to winter sow or to seed tray sow or direct sow breakdown in our Dallas zone 8?
Thanks so much for this! Exactly what I needed to know! Question: I have self watering seed trays, where the trays sit above the water and absorb it through wicking. Would you recommend that I use your method for applying the fertilizer and then refill the trays with fresh water again? Also, is it ok to mist the seedlings once they are up to just top them off if they seem a tad bit dry? Thanks again for your help!
Hi there! I’ve never used the self watering trays so I can’t give advice on that but as for the misting, that’s fine as long as you have good air circulation… too much water on the leaves can cause disease.
Thanks so much for the info!! Just the video I was looking for so helpful 😊 I have a question - so when you pot up the seedlings do those also go under a grow light? And if so what does your set up look like? Thank you again for the information
Yes they go back under the grow lights until they can be moved outside … I set up a cheap temporary greenhouse in late winter and start moving plants in there to make room as they get bigger.
Such good info, thanks so much!! Can you please tell me on grow lights, right from the beginning, do you set timer to 16 hrs or is that after sprouting? It’s Looking like my Lisianthus is going to be a fail😢 Thanks for your help!!!
Hi - I live in Southern Ontario Canada - zone 6b and so am just getting on this bandwagon. haha.... What are your thoughts about the distance of sprouted seeds to LED full spectrum grow lights? Should I be using the full spectrum? Or just the white part? This information is very hard to come by and doesn't come with the lights I bought from Amazon. Thank you! New fan here!
I don’t stress about spectrum lights … I typically use LED lights that are for workshops … cheap and they are efficient. I keep my seedlings as close to the light as possible so my seedlings don’t get leggy.
I’m curious where you’re keeping the seedlings that have germinated; your back drop shows the seed starts but do you transfer them to a greenhouse/other shelves?
Help! My son started a tray of tomato seeds with a kit from a store. They are still under the plastic and each pod has several leggy seedlings. I just took off the plastic cover, but is it too late? There are only two leaves per seedlings and they are already almost three inches tall.
Any suggestions on the smell of the fish fertilizer in one’s home? I have my seed starting station in my basement and it literally fills the home with a smell of fish. It’s disgusting.😂😂😂
The best thing to do is really dilute the fish emulsion with more water … less emulsion and more water … once you water everything g give it a few hours and then drain off any excess water to prevent overwhelming smell … and good air flow with a fan helps too!
Great info! Wish I knew all of this 3 years ago when I started. I've not seen such thorough info as yours. It will certainly help new growers.

Glad you like them!
When you cut the seedlings back can you put the cut ones in soil to root and have more? I have noticed on occasion when I do that it works..and so more plants lol... I love your videos.. I look forward to them every day ❤
Yes you can and I totally should have in this case!
Super informative! Started stocks and snapdragon for the first time. They have germinated but super tiny, how long it takes to grow big?
A little while but the hard part is the sprouting so good for you! Make sure they are very close to the light source!
@@shesamadgardener Thanks, will sure see to it!
Your seedlings are doing great and I appreciate the tips 😊
Curious to know if you can take those trimmings from the petunias and root them?
I should have 🤦♀️🤷♀️
wondering if your begonias failed because you didnt pre moisten the growing medium? this would have allowed you to control the moisture level better. Think you over saturated and then compounded that by placing a humidity dome on top. I'm about to start my begonias here in zone 5b. I've always had success using a sterile seed starting mix, no mold issues. Wonderful video and great info.
Perhaps! I’ll definitely makes some changes if I start them again! I’m still thrilled with the ones that I did get!
Thank you so much for all of this great info! Does the fish fertilizer make the whole room stink?
Yep, it’s pretty stinky but dissipates fast.
I’ve heard scabiosa needs cold stratification, you might have more success with them then? Thanks for your videos!
I’m definitely willing to give it a try for better germination!
Begonias are so hard to germinate, in my experience. They take forever and it’s hard to get them going in January in Michigan. LOL
Yup … I’ve learned that now!
Such good info, thanks so much!!
Can you please tell me on grow lights, right from the beginning, do you set timer to 16 hrs or is that after sprouting? It’s Looking like my Lisianthus is going to be a fail😢
Thanks for your help!!!
I set it right away unless the seed packet calls for darkness to sprout …. Lisianthus take a while so don’t give up yet!
@@shesamadgardener ok, thank you so much for helping!
I have a seedling update this week where I show my setup! Thanks for the suggestion!
Thanks❤❤❤❤
You're welcome 😊
love you`
Thanks!
Help! My son started a tray of tomato seeds with a kit from a store. They are still under the plastic and each pod has several leggy seedlings. I just took off the plastic cover, but is it too late? There are only two leaves per seedlings and they are already almost three inches tall.
Tomato seedlings can be potted up and planted deeper, so you might be able to save them.
I need a heating mat
❤️ it helps a lot
