Is living Off Grid a Utopia & is leaving Society even possible?

More and more people are talking about checking out of society. Leave civilization. Turn your back on the hamster wheel. Escape the Matrix, so to speak.
To live freely and independently. Perhaps to find peace, tranquility and undisturbedness. And to be able to take care of yourself and live the life you want. A life that is not dictated or determined by society, or anyone other than yourself.

There is a growing longing in many of us. A longing to connect more with nature. Connect more with our own inner authentic nature. And to live in inner balance and as free and independent people. A trend that presumably stems from the growing dissatisfaction with society. Which for many seems more and more clinging and imprisoning.
We are fascinated by shows like "Alone" and people who do what the rest of us dream of. Namely, the notion of living completely out in the wilderness as a free and independent person.
However, is this just a utopia and an illusion for most people, which has no hold in reality?
And is it even still possible to check out from society and turn your back on civilization?
Or is it too late?
