I noticed as well that they place heavy importance on "designer clothes" (more like stupidly overpriced clothes). Not saying this behaviour isn't prominent in the west, but in Europe where I am from i was never exposed to this type of materialism or emphasis on wealth, so being exposed to Korea's "golden-spoon" "chaebol" classist society, and classism based bullying, really was shocking to me....
why do you broaden the Korean matter to "lots of Asian societies" all the way? I have also seen the study case about the value comparisons by country that he mentioned and, Korea and another country (probably spain) was the only different country about the collected answers for most important thing for life, that is, material wealth. Also about Fashion, the girl in the middle of the video mentioned like Japan and Europe people wear Uniqlo fashion more. that means Japanese people care less about their designer clothes. it depends on the term "a lot of" but when you say a lot of East Asian countries, it usually means China(Taiwan) and Japan whether you add" in general" or not , right? then actually materialism isn't as intense in Japan as you consider.
