    Salmon Plunking Rig! Here is my favorite way to set up for plunking!
    Plunking is where you throw a lure with a heavy weight in the river current, and let the fish come to you. Fishing for salmon by plunking is one of the most relaxing ways to fish. Just sit back and wait for your rod to start bending over!

    Great video, good to see you younger guys hitting the river banks. Couple points, add a good swivel on end of the leader at spreader a spin glo can REALLY generate a lot of line twist. tie on little hank of yarn to egg loop bow makes it easier to open with wet cold fingers. Been fishing like this since mid 1960's it will catch salmon, trout and steelhead anywhere they swim...

    New to plunking and I just picked up some of those spreaders from Anglers West with a scent chamber to try. Haven't used them yet but have you ever had any issues with the wire bending on a big fish? I'm just curious with that 90 degree bend from mainline to leader.

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Awesome! I have used those spreaders as well and they are great. I have never had an issue with the wire bending so much that the metal breaks in half. The only bend you will most likely get is just more of an arcing bend. Once you land that fish, you just need to adjust the wire back to straight (unless of course you see real damage on the wire.) I hope that makes sense and good luck out there!

      TightLineOutdoors
      I find my spreaders at my local tackle store, Fishermans Marine and Outdoor. A lot of people will hand make them. If you buy wire that is used to make spinners, you can make your own custom sized spreaders. At fisherman's, the spreaders are near all the swivels. I hope this helps.

    If you fish on the Columbia river, how far do you cast out from the bank? Thank you

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      If I'm on the Columbia I'm usually hucking my gear as far as possible without really putting horrible stress on my rod. But if I am not getting into any fish at that distance, I will aim/reel in to a closer spot to myself. I usually wait 30-45 mins before recasting. Having a line counter reel can help you fine tune your distances, but sometimes doesn't allow for further casts. I personally prefer a line counter reel, so I can take note of what distance I am at when I am getting into action. With that, I try to get my line counter and casts as close to that mark as possible to hopefully get better chances at landing more fish. I hope this makes sense and helps!

      Also rod action thanks in advance

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      So for me personally, I have been using the same old Okuma Celio Heavy rod (Okuma Celilo CE-C-1102)
      that I got for one of my first Plunking rods. I did one time have the Okuma SST 13FT 10IN rod, but ended up selling it because it was just overkill. There are definitely some higher end rods, but I never took the time to find out more because my old rod just works! Your main goal is to have a rod you feel confident flinging 6oz up to sometimes 16oz out into the river. Heavy rods that are in the 10-12ft range with heavy lure weight ratings would be my suggestion. I hope this helps!

    • @FTWQ

  • @davidsung8598
    @davidsung8598 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Is plunking good for fall Chinook? Also, do you add roe or shrimp to it?

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Plunking is definitely good for Fall Chinook. Actually I like to use tuna. Just grab a can of tuna in oil, and then smoosh it around your hook. You will want to secure it with some stretching thread, such as miracle thread. The tuna will disperse into the water behind your lure and some will stay on the hook. Roe and shrimp are great baits as well. Just depends on what the Salmon is craving that moment! Doesn't hurt to try them all. Hopefully this helps!

    • @nguyencao8873
      @nguyencao8873 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@FTWQ Really appreciate for the informative video. I am wondering if there is no bait on the hook, can we still catch fish?

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@nguyencao8873 Yep you definitely can. Honestly, I almost prefer it because it is easier and less messy. Plus, there are days when the person without bait is getting all the strikes. So yes, you can fish this rig with or without bait! 👍. Also, you can just bring your favorite scents with you and just lather the spin n glo up. This is a good way to add scent without dealing with bait.

    • @FTWQ
      @FTWQ  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The way I like to cast is to get the rod ready behind me... And lay the weight down almost on the ground... Have all the line and lures hanging clean. When I cast I try not to cast straight over my head, but more of a 45 degree angled cast and almost swing the lures around me. Almost making sure that weight is doing more of the work pulling your lures out, rather then the rod flinging everything. I hope this makes sense and potentially helps.... But I would say practice makes perfect!
