Initiation into Odissi: In Conversation with Sharon Lowen

A prominent Odissi dancer and guru, Sharon Lowen has made outstanding contributions to Indian classical arts through a career spanning four decades. Born and brought up in the US, she was fascinated with dance right from a very young age. In this conversation with Madhur Gupta, Lowen talks about about her initial learning days in Manipuri and Chau and how a workshop conducted by Odissi guru Kelucharan Mohapatra changed the course of her life forever. Lowen started learning Odissi under Mohapatra and was able to establish her place among the first rung dancers in the country. She talks about the challenges that she encountered in this journey.
Madhur Gupta is one of the leading Odissi dance exponents of his generation. He is also an author and columnist widely featured in national and international publications for his sensitive writings in the field of arts and culture. Apart from extensively performing and writing, Madhur also teaches Odissi at Sangeet Vidya Niketan, New Delhi.
