The flip screen is not a compromise. It allows shooting with closed screen.

    • @brownbear100

You can turn the screen off with any camera and add a screen protector if that's the concern. Putting a screen optimised for video on a photography focussed camera that is actually worse for that purpose is certainly a compromise. I'd go further and say it's a bad decision. At least a Sony ARV type screen if it's got to flip.
The cameras this camera is trying to ape were of course photo only. And why photography first users are drawn to them. Really not the best option for video first users even if it is workable. Those old cameras didn't have flip screens either, but those are far more suited to photography.
The problem this camera has is not the performance or design, it's the implementation trying to please everyone that gives it a split personality. Basically it seems Nikon wants the looks to join the Fuji hype train but will not fully commit. Really they should have released the Z6III, and then this as an alternative without the flip screen, or PASM switch and with some lenses with apertures.

Oh, I have a few thoughts to share.
    1. This is a 710 grams camera with no grip! Keep in mind the ff lenses weight, too.
    2. Nikon has a z6, which is a beautiful camera, lighter, less expensive and has a proper tilting screen. The fact that they chose the flip screen on this retro model is insane.
    3. The camera looks like a replica of an old camera. Fuji has a different approach: the x-t5 looks like a modern camera with analogue dials. This point is a matter of taste.
    I would consider nikon z6...

I disagree with your assessment of the 40mm F2 for the Nikon Zf. It is not as bad as you make it sound. And the Nikon Zf is a much better camera than the Fuji Xt5 in terms of quality all around. I have both! with several respective lenses. However, to each its own. For me, fuji glass is nice but other than being smaller and less heavy, it is inferior to the Nikon Z glass in performance. If you don't like the 40mm f2, go with the 26mm f2.8 pancake or with the very highly regarded 50mm 1.8. Just one person's opinion. Thanks!!

An underrated full frame Nikon Z pancake lens is their 26mm 2.8. It has some compromises, but it is a better lens than the 40mm 2.0. The 26mm also doesn't use the cheap plastic lens mount.

Thanks for the video! I’m looking into Fuji (from SoNikon). How is a flip screen even “retro”? The 3-way variable provides more options and helps me personally compose better at extreme angles with the added bonuses of screen protection, lcd-free shooting, and vlog usage. If I buy into Fuji I’ll purchase either an X-H2 or X-T4 partly for the screen style (and battery grip). Would love to see direct comparisons between ZF and Fuji if get your hands on one.

Starting in Leica rangefinders I value a compact setup that’s easy to carry for long periods. I think the Nikon is a great camera for some people but probably not for me.
1: it’s to big and uncomfortable to hold without a bracket, making it even bigger.
2: they dropped the ball with the lenses, a beautiful retro looking camera with very modern looking lenses. Not an aperture ring in sight.
3: I really don’t like the vlogger flippy screen but again that’s a personal preference. Give me a screen like the xt5 any day.

If I order this new Nikon (which looks beautiful), then I know I'm really suffering from G.A.S. in the worst way. lol. I'll stick to my Fujifilm. For now. lol. I do agree that the tilt screen (up and down) vs the articulated flip out screen to the side is better for street photography. I do not want to go back to a fully articulating screen for street shooting... (although I do like having the articulated screen on the cameras I use for video work). So it is a hard pass for me right now...not to mention I like very much the Fujicron lenses for quality and size. I'm quite satisfied. Then the film simulations are hard to beat on the Fujifilm. But if Nikon were to come out with a rangefinder style body design, with a tilt screen, I might jump ship ;-)

On the Z you can get the voigtlander 40mm f1.2 if you dont mind manual focus. And it's not that big. I agree about the screen, photographers dont like it so it's a bad choice. Nikon image quality is for me levels above fuji but their retro system can't compete. They need to make small lenses with aperture rings. Then they will be able to compete with fuji

Aside from Leica M, about half of Fujifilms lineup, Panasonic Lumix LX100 (and in the analog world, cameras like Nikon FE2 or FM3a) nobody actually does the ”retro” inspired dials correct. What do all these cameras have in common? No PASM dial/switch. You just set settings, or leave them in auto. No thinking about which exposure mode you're in, you leave that to the camera.
With both the Nikon Df, the Zc and not the Zf Nikon clearly do not understand this. They just make surface level styling without fundamentally making sure there camera works in modeless fashion. It's really too bad as they got it right with their own analog cameras like the afermetioned Nikons. Talk about forgetting your own history!
It's really too bad, because otherwise they got a lot of things right.

Having owned an RP with lcd focus point options… I loved it, and have preferred it to every joystick I’ve owned… same with the D5500. The micro SD inclusion I think was a great idea. Most reviews have not had any buffer issues and many photographers simply use it as a backup… Micro UHS II would’ve been better but at least Nikon provided something. AF on the ZF is 90% what the Z8/9 is which surpasses the Z6ii and Fuji offerings. I’m looking seriously at Fuji for SOOC Jpegs, glass size and price, etc. but low light and AF performance are my 2 hangups. The 40mp X-H2 and it’s 3-way lcd is a very compelling package for this SoNikon user. A good example of how Fuji leaving their typical screen style is also drawing Nikon users.. I’d also consider an X-T4 over the X-T5 for its screen and battery grip features.

The flip screen for many was a reason not to get the Fuji x-t4, a camera cancelled after less than two years while the x-t3 coexisted as one for the purists. You'd think Nikon would have been aware of not just the hype it wants to jump on, but what has and hasn't worked for the yardstick of retro cameras over the years.
Really Nikon should have first released the Z6III with the slip screen and allowed video to share priority with stills, or even be the focus. And then release this camera as a photography focussed version.
Not just the flip screen but other aspects point to Nikon hoping to cash in on the looks rather than rhe whole retro camera shooting experience. I mean what is a PASM switch doing there? That's what the dials are for, that's how you achieve the PASM!
You mention quakity of the lenses more as a secondary issue. I think its the main problem with this camera. Not the quality per se, but that there are none with an aperture ring. Not even one as a kit option. And using a lens with a marked aperture is half of the retro experience.
So retro, photographer's camera with video screen yet poor grip for video, no lenses with an apeture ring and a PASM for video again, or just to please those that only want the looks but not the function?
I guess Nikonistas will point to third party lenses and vintage lenses with aperture rings, but that shouldn't be the only option.

Though I typically prefer “slip” screens (great descriptive btw) on all my cameras, your reasoning considering what has not worked for Fuji is veritable. Also makes me think perhaps this is not aimed at snagging Fuji adherents but capitalizing on Fuji’s marketing ideas with their own real legacy and user base at heart. For example, the D5500 series I bought largely based on its screen options… including the lcd based digital “joystick” (though hardly retro). If Nikon can flesh out some appropriate lenses with good size to performance ratios (and programmable rings for aperture)… like a Tamron 20-40 F2, they may have a new successful line. Especially considering accessorizing possibilities. If the ZF sells extremely well, Nikon should consider releasing a special edition with just a flip screen. As a former Z6ii owner, I agree with your Z6iii thoughts.

Nikon Zf is 4K60 with ridiculous crop... not really for videographers. That's Fuji X-T3 era stuff.
