I must say, having recently bought both Verdun and Tanneburg, I can safely say that I've had the most fun I've ever had playing an FPS. It's such a breath of fresh air playing a game and not having to worry about an anime cosplayer 360• no scoping me out of nowhere. I just wish I could play against more players. I'm super excited to get Isonzo after these two bangers.

I think BF1 and the WW1 series (Verdun, Tannenberg, and Isonzo) are the only ones with any staying power, which kinda sucks because the others are somewhat creative. The problem is, WW1 is much harder to make a game about: too authentic and it's boring or frustrating, too many liberties and it's not WW1.
Also, for the WW1 series, you went with the Belgian M1889, the Romanian M1893, and the Mannlicher M95 stutzen, which I point out because those are all my favorite guns from each game lmao. Just a neat coincidence :)

@@Dourkan budget is really the thing. The main reason indie games cant compete is they lack the scale in their games. If you can have hundreds of players like in battlebit in a ww1 game with an actual functioning commander system (so frontlines actually form like in BF 1942), you can easily have an authentic and fun WW1 experience without the need of arming players with SMGs and LMGs like in BF1 while appealing both casual plebes and people who appreciate historical authenticity.

It's sad Isonzo isn't appreciated as it should be. I have about 100h on it, and it's a really fun game, that gives a good experience of an otherwise mostly ignored theater of war. The maps a pretty diverse, the weapon selection is well crafted, well balanced and the gameplay is quite easy to grasp.
You have a number of classes you can take, which all have different attributes that actually impact the battlefield (building defenses, spotting from afar, calling in artillery, etc...) and pushes cooperation between teammates.
I played verdun when it came out, and later when it died down, it's really not the same experience but you can sense that Isonzo really learned and expended on the lessons from the previous games

Beyond The Wire was by far the most fun for me when it was still active, since it really is just Squad in WW1. Great audio, incredible details in the gun models, and a really intense feeling when playing against dozens of players inside super crammed trenches or small villages. Sad to see the approx. 15 players that still play this game only on saturdays, tho. Like trying to ride a dead horse...
Tannenberg and Verdun are classics, but I doubt the series will ever be majorly successful since the playerbase is already split between three reasonably similar games (with Isonzo).
BF1 was the most arcadey but also by far the most popular, so that goes to show what modern audiences want in a multiplayer FPS. One of the reasons Beyond the Wire dies, I guess.
Holdfast was super fun and increadibly chaotic when hundreds of guys on both sides just ran into each other, but the players eventually migrated back to the classic linebattles since it is a little less hectic than the MGs and artillery of the WW1 Frontlines mode.

i played verdun since it was playable on steam. At the beginning of the games life when you had loads of full servers the gameplay was insane, especially when they increased the max playercount on a server. The hail mary pushes, the frantic respawning to releave a foothold in the enemy trench, working out the perfect path through nomansland, getting ungodly amounts of kills with a forward deployed mg08/15, comebacks from your last line of defence or even slugging out a victory by capping just one trench that changed hands 10000 times already. In those times Verdun oftentimes felt like a 30min cs 1v3 clutch

One of my favorite memories of Early Access Verdun was playing in Flanders. I remember at the time it was such a nightmare to cross compared to later in the game's life with the new squads. I remember just basically starting from my trench on the far right [Entente Side] on the absolute edge of the map. I would crawl all the way to the enemy trench, then allow my squad to spawn in, and we were able to make some headway on the first trench. But I always enjoyed doing it. I remember a guy coming with me slowly crawling, only to get sniped. You get that "Oh shit I'm in danger now" feeling, especially knowing you have to spend 3 minutes crawling again if you die.

The weekends have play sessions hosted by the community in the last weeks we had around 70-80 players at one time anyone is welcome and they are usually around 1pm EST. 3. i like the Video but you are not giving Beyond the Wire enough credit, its a fantastic ww1 game and probably one of the best ww1 games if they would still be working on it, they just never fixed a lot of the bugs, performens is ass and the content they did add wasnt really amazing, you have like 6 allied factions and only 2 central powers factions and both are german, they didnt even add the ottomans when they added Australian forces, they never even talked about adding Austria, italy or russia
For a while they really werent connected with the community at all and the game got a bit COD'ish
Overall tho the gore, gunplay, melee (wich is still bugged), sound (i think the sounds are awsome) and maps just make this game so great, i have never played a game where CQB was this much fun, just people shooting stabbing or clubbing each other, getting your saber out and slashing away, flamethrowers wiping out an entire squad, unloading your entire Revolver into a medic that sort of stuff

Two things that always seem to stick out to me about common critiques around WW1 games.
    1. The content “lack”. For WW1 enthusiasts, many of us like unlocking obscure semi auto pistols and funky bolt action rifles as many of us are reenactors and collectors who own this stuff irl and know that the guns perform and feel different. This can be immensely satisfying when done as well as Isonzo where you can feel the difference between the rifles. They do however need to bring Verdun and Tannenberg to that level.
Secondly, BF1 being “the least WW1 game out there”. BF1 is WW1 in microcosm and is VERY WW1 for those who know more about that war as a world war and not just a European fight. It’s weapons aren’t even as far fetched as it may seem at first either. 80% of the weapons in game were used in SOME Capacity and it’s great that people can see how large of a leap forward in tech WW1 was. People don’t seem to complain that WW2 games over represent their automatics even in games like HLL so we need to cut BF1 some slack, especially considering it covers more fronts currently than any other WW1 game.

  • @Malpaise_Legate
    @Malpaise_Legate ปีที่แล้ว +1

There was something about Isonzo that was really promising. It seemed like it had everything going for it, along with a decent budget to pull it off by comparison to previous titles in the WW1 franchise.
My only issue with Isonzo was the weapon locomotion in this game. The player character emphasizes the recoil impulse of the rifle to a degree that feels... "cartoony." The jerk when firing looks like someone is holding the rifle in both hands, but not pressing the stock firmly against their shoulder. A weird flip-up on the muzzle end, with a rebounding wiggle from the action end. Rifles do not do that when firing with a proper stance, and I noticed it immediately. Verdun and Tannenberg managed to do this much more accurately, and it was strange to see it done this way so far into this franchise.
It's a shame that Verdun is the only game to maintain much of it's player base, and get plenty of returning players. Isonzos gameplay was actually quite good. In my opinion, a bit better than Tannenberg, while still being more motion-driven than Verdun. Sadly, it looks like its servers will be left to slowly die out.

Verdun, Tannenberg, and Isonzo are amazing games. Ive played all of them extensively and dont regret getting any of them even a little. The one thing that hurts them is one of the things that makes them so good. They've isolated each title. What I mean by that is Verdun is exclusively the western front, Tannenberg is exclusively the eastern front, Isonzo the Italian front. It limits the content, obviously if you had French soldiers fighting in Russia it wouldn't be historically accurate and would kill the immersion. Their decision to do it that way made it so they could make each game stay true to history in a way few games do which I for one really like and appreciate. Easily the best WW1 game out there, they can make one more covering the events that happened in the middle east. Bet they call it Gallipoli, and hope they find a way to honor T.E. Lawrence.

The Verdun series holds strongest to me because of the game modes. They don't always win in the models or animations or sounds (though Isonzo was a big improvement) but the game modes and how the play style works nailed it in representing that era of warfare.
The feeling of attacking and defending in Verdun just to end up tied and everyone back where they started. Throwing your entire team over wide open fields in Tannenberg to finally break into a church. Lobbing grenades over cliffs in Isonzo as the enemy team slowly climbs their way up. These aren't inherently unique game modes but combined with little details it makes it all work.
The other games, even when more realistic in some ways, suffer from being the franchise's existing play style in WWI. I liked Beyond the Wire feeling sluggish for example, whereas Verdun can be very fast and twitchy in comparison, but a BtW game always progressed to me more like a WW2 game or late 1918.

You honestly should've played Screaming Steel, which is a free WW1 mod for Day of Infamy, a WW2 shooter by the developers of Insurgency (and it's sequel Sandstorm). It's a bit dead, because there's generally like 30 concurrent players, most of whom are playing the PvE mode of the main game, but it's not a big deal. The gameplay is more similar to hardcore CoD with small maps and teams, and the PvE mode is playable with just a few human players.
