  • Ever wondered how much authors make if they self-publish? Today I'm showing exactly how much money my first book currently is earning, two years after it was released.
    Join the Bestseller Book Launch workshop: www.gillianper...
    The #1 deciding factor of how well any book will do (especially a self-published book on Amazon) is how much traction it gets during it's launch. The better it does in it's first few days, the more visibility it will get, and the higher it will rank on Amazon. This means it will continue to be more visible and make more sales.
    Without a strategic book launch, a self-published book will get lost in the millions of books on Amazon and never stand a chance.
    Learn the strategies that allowed my first, self-published book to become a #1 international bestseller within the first week after it was released! Join this month's Bestseller Book Launch Workshop here: www.gillianper...

      @@babyreps365 I know this comment is from 4 months ago but just in case it does help a little bit, I am going to post this comment. You could approach it as a stand-alone product but the best would be to approach it from a business mindset/business perspective by creating and establishing an author's platform. Research marketing and advertising as well as an author platform, and after learning and understanding the information, figure out a way to apply it as you see fit. There are great sources out there! The most important factor to remember in all this is "to write, write, write, and write because you can't promote something you don't have!" (something one of my professors said to me)

      @@stepahead7589 honestly i didnt do much. Definitely keep SEO in mind when writing your description and all that, for me my book is about welding, so i made sure it had a very relatable title. Aside from that, i ran amazon ppc and did ppc facebook ads for about 2 montha last year to research. I did a giveaway about a year after i listed the book, which i was already probably making $300 a month. Facebook ppc didnt seem like it was working until i went from like $300-400 a month to $1000 profit in one huge jump. But i havent had ppc running either on amazon or facebook for about a year now. I have $1,008 total to be deposited into my account in 2 days and at this point its all organic searches no ppc or marketing of any kind. I do plan to turn ppc back on, id like to try and double my current sales, so we'll see.

    • @sjm98126
      @sjm98126 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@cristina9202 theres not a $100 threshhold as far as i know. My first payments were less than $20 i believe. They pay once a month on the 29th, and you get paid 90 days after the sale. So if you start selling books today, it will be at least 90 days until you get paid on those sales, but once its consistent youre getting paid every month. Also each market pays separate so if i sell a book in new zealand or india for example, i get a separate deposit from each country. But when i sell like 1 copy kindle dowload to india, i get a payment of like a dollar. So knowing they all pay separately, i dont think they put a threshold of $100 or i wouldnt ever get paid on my foreign sales.

    The best thing to do to increase sales is to write the next book. You can't make money on a book that isn't out there. Last year, I sold 1400 copies of a trilogy I wrote in the early '90's. Under one name I've published 24 books, in my other name, I have 15 books plus 4 short story collections. A launch is questionable time spent. The more you have out there, the more people you catch.

      It's very strange how reluctant we are to talk about money with other writers. I think that has something to do with being artificially competitive, which makes no sense at all, especially since staying silent about the business side of things prevents us from doing things like establishing standard market rates for our work. Editors talk about what they charge all the time, and as a result there's fairly consistent (and high, and fair) return.
      The one thing I've discovered in my years writing is that the "competition" is an illusion. The thing we should be doing above all is connecting with each other, making other friends in the industry, and especially in our own little corner of the industry. It's not a game of winners and losers: when your friend hits it big, it doesn't mean you fail. It means that they are helping to make your genre more popular, and helping to bring more attention to you and make it easier for you to succeed. As an independent writer, the success of any other independent writer is good news to me, not bad. If we could all realize that we'd be a much better resource when it comes to helping one another.

      B.L. Alley, I 100% agree with you. I was pulled in to a vanity publisher who was a friend of a friend. She took about $3,500, did the bare minimum to have someone else edit and create a cover and that was all. No connections. No promotions. And I ended up buying copies on my own to promote and sell. I've since been working with a new publisher who is putting in their own money to fix the injustice and rebrand my series. I've also published other books on Kindle which is much easier/practically free.

    • @LeonAllanDavis
      @LeonAllanDavis 6 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Let me analyze your problem, JD.
      You wrote a "vanity book".
      In other words, you were writing for an audience of one: yourself.
      Nobody cares about you. Not enough to read anything about you anyway. Nobody gives a shit.
      You should write stuff people want to read.
      What do people want to read? Duh!
      Go to Goodwill and grab an armful of books you like. Read all the books.
      Go back to Goodwill and repeat the process. As many times as necessary.
      By the end of a couple years you should have read two or three hundred books. Minimum.
      Then come up with a plot and start writing.
      If you have trouble putting words on paper, go back to Goodwill.
      If you can't find any books you like at Goodwill, you are well and truly fucked. In a million years, you'll never be a writer.

    • @JDClair
      @JDClair 6 ปีที่แล้ว +39

      Leon Allan Davis I have a degree in English and I've read plenty of books. I chased publishing agents for years but the market is saturated with so many authors that most agents are not willing to waste time on a nobody. I used the vanity publisher as a starting point, hoping that I could gain an audience. It didn't work. The people who did read my work liked it and shared it but these are small waves in the ocean of literature. That isn't to say I've given up. In fact, I've continued to write and am currently working with a new publisher who is paying to re-brand my series. I also just had a short story picked up in an anthology series. So there's hope for me yet.

    This was a great and honest overview and it also highlights the need to learn online marketing and take a self publish book launch as serious as having a business. If she would've had online sales funnels and was actively promoting it the sky is the limit as to how much she would've made. She did say this though but it's very important new self published writers understand this if they are expecting to live off of writing. Learn online marketing and you'll kill it or hire someone who can promote for you.

    Hi G. I have been enjoying your videos. Just a thought about your book and your earnings. I am an author as well (this is a pen name). You might actually earn MORE royalties by lowering the price of your ebook. Many ebook buyers shy away from such expensive books, especially short ones. Fiction wise, 35,000 is actually a novella, not a novel. (Not trying to dis you about your book at all, just mentioning it because you are so straightforward yourself.) If you lowered your price to 5.99 or 4.99, you'd make less per book, but potential sell many more copies, raising your visibility on Amazon. Many successful authors operate on this theory. Remember, you can lower the price for a month and see how it goes. If it performs better at the higher price, then you can always mark it back to it's original price. Keep going kiddo. You are inspiring to watch! Li

    Good video. You always hear claims about people making so much money on the Internet and most are bogus. It's good to hear that somebody did realize some success and has had some passive income to boot. I ran several ecommerce sites for several years and never made anything for all of the hours invested. Most of the people who have commented haven't realized anything from self-publishing. The degree of success that you have had is exceptional and it's good to know how it came about.

    Love your video! I have been getting small royalty checks from Amazon for over two years now. I am a self published author with 14 books under my belt, with two more books ready to be published next week. Writers with Amazon receive 35 cents per copy sold, if the book sells for 99 cents. So it takes a lot of copies to earn 100.00 dollars, lol. I also have several hard back books that sell for more money, but in the long run, unless its a "How To Do", or a "How to Learn something" book, the "profits" are meager, unless of course, you happen to be a well known celebrity! Most self published authors have over 100 books published under various names. However, because I love to write, and although competition is fierce, I will keep plugging away until I reach that magical number of 100! TB Riggs.

    I have sold over 250,000 books in five years, and made over $600K., I know I'm unusual, in fact, some big name authors I know call me an anomaly. And my first traditionally published book, part of a three book series, is coming out in June. How did I do it? beats me.

    Now this is how I did it: I write about Texas history (1836 era). Now, did I go to a vanity, or 'real' publisher? NO! I took my MS to a local printer, had 50 copies printed, then sold them on Ebay/Amazon sites, and they sold well! I only printed in small batches of 25 to 50 copies, so I would not have a garage full of books printed by some vanity company. In other words, I printed only what I thought I would need, and kept the whole price/profit for myself!!!! It works folks! On the sites, I price them from $12.99 to $19.99, and kept the whole price. Sometimes I included shipment, or the buyer paid it. Local libraries have my books, Yale, etc., and even in far off Texas! It's been a blast!

    You said you earned $3000 on 15,000 sales? What am I missing here?
    Even if you gave away 5000 of that 15,000 for free, that's still 10,000 sales
    I don't know how much you're selling your book for, but even if it's $5 a pop, you could still easily earn $1-$2 per sale
    So to me, 10,000 sales could at least be about $15,000
    You said you only made $3000, are you really spending $12,000 on the launch and advertising?
    I'm super confused. What factors am I missing?

      Chase The Vase and then later she says she's selling books for ten and making 7 or 8 so she got in on the Amazon authors plan where they give your book away and give you a small slice of a very large authors community type royalty pie.... Which is awesome to get your book read but if your objective is to sell books🙄🙃 it's still a good idea to an extent..... Not making much money this way but she got her book out there and in the future she sells her books at whatever her paperback price happens to be and makes fair royalties, which Amazon is actually known for as far as I know, and if she writes a book that gets a following she'll end up with a fan base

    My novel is incredibly topical right now (midlife women fight against the divisions of hate, usher in a new era of peace). I promote it every day through social media memes, FB page, website, etc. Spent $100 in advertising this past month. Sold 5 copies. I paid $197 for book reviewing software. Sent out 2,000 targeted emails. Got 5 reviews, all 5-star. Spent 13 years writing the book and over 16 months promoting. Have made maybe $100. Trying to sell to libraries right now, but just about to walk away.

      My opinion, for what it's worth. Your book, on what you've stated above, is only going to appeal to a very small market. You are also an unknown author. You can do all the things you listed above, but if the market appeal isn't there, it's not going to sell. There's also the factor of luck. I wrote a bunch of children's books and self published them about five years ago. Most didn't sell, or only sold a bit for a short period of time. However, one of the books was a hit. It's not selling near as much five years later as it did the first few years, but I still make (what I consider to be), a very decent sum every month. The book is ten pages long and took a weekend to write. I hardly marketed the book at all. I got lucky (and I thank my lucky stars!).
