    A Russian invasion of Poland would be political and economic suicide for Russia, Poland is quite a lot richer than Ukraine and more modern but more importantly, they are in the EU, I know we have article 5 with NATO but it's just a word that hasn't been tested, not really much holds those countries together in NATO because they are not really integrated together.
    The EU is quite different, from the early days shortly after the second world war with the Coal and Steel Community which was designed to pool resources among its members and make it almost impossible to go to war with each other, well that impact the same if a country was to invade any of them, basically, it would hurt them all which would compel them to get involved in a much more forceful way than we are seeing in Ukraine out of self-interest, integration is key to how much effort others are willing to do to help.
    It's also the reason why with talks of Ukraine going neutral, they are willing to put NATO on the table of not joining but they are not mentioning the EU because the EU is the real prize they want that more or less offers the same security and protection plus a lot of other benefits, the truth is, an attack on an EU and probably a NATO member could quickly escalate into a major war, something I highly doubt Russia is willing to do with its poor performance in Ukraine.
    With all that said, Ukraine should try to join both the EU and NATO, every level of protection adds more security and stability to the region, NATO does have its uses but because some of the big members are far away from the conflict zone, it doesn't impact them as much, whereas the EU with a war on its door step, well all of a sudden, there's a much bigger incentive to intervene, the problem is, the EU is quite powerless to do much on the military front as it's mostly a national thing, thats a major problem because the members are pulling in all directions which is the weakness Putin plays on and it really makes me wonder if the EU had its own military and one voice, put 60,000 peace keeping troops in Ukraine before the war started that we could have prevented the war from starting, the US could have done the same but the reality is, they rarely care about things outside it's boarder, the EU being as the war is on its door step would likely intervene because no one wants a war zone on its door step, so basically, Putin is taking advantage of our division in Europe and not just Europe, but even the divisions the EU and US have shown over the last few years.

    2:14 While technically correct. It could/should be pointed out that this obligation to come to the fellow NATO state's aid does not require the member to do so militarily.
    The wording of article 5 was chosen carefully in order to facilitate this. And is an important pretext to European leaders questioning whether the mutual protection provided by NATO is good enough.

    3:48 While the hilarious irony of the chapter on the EU being overrun by the chapter on NATO is not lost on me.
    It did mean that you didn't touch on article 42.7. Which is the direct equivalent of NATO's article 5!
    And possibly even quite a bit stronger than the NATO article, is it forces every EU member to actually join the fight.
    Unlike article 5, which leaves room to assist however the NATO member sees fit (so possibly not militarily).

    • @redred7289
      @redred7289 2 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Article 42.7 does not oblige EU members to join the fight because it allows for the neutrality of Ireland, Austria, Sweden and Finland.

    • @Janoip
      @Janoip 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@redred7289 yes no direkt fight but
      There, Art. 42(7) TEU stipulates that in the event of an armed attack on the territory of a Member State, the other Member States shall owe it all the aid and assistance in their power, in accordance with Article 51 of the Charter of the United Nations [UN Charter]. Article 42(7) TEU also makes clear that obligations and cooperation in this area shall remain consistent with those undertaken within the framework of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization [NATO].
      What are the consequences of invoking Art. 42(7) TEU?
      The obligation to assist described in Art. 42(7) TEU clearly goes beyond the content of Art. 5 of the NATO Treaty. Indeed, Art. 5 NATO Treaty only requires a duty to render assistance that is deemed necessary, whereas Art. 42(7) TEU obliges Member States to do everything in their power. The use of armed force can therefore be demanded from the member state declaring an alliance situation by invoking Article 42 (7) TEU.
      However, Art. 42(7) TEU does not offer a limitless obligation to assist. All measures must be taken in close coordination with the United Nations, since NATO's tasks and objectives under Article 42(7) TEU may not be impaired by the activation of the European mutual assistance clause.
      Invoking Article 42(7) TEU also has the advantage of appealing to the solidarity of member states that are not members of NATO, such as Austria, Ireland, Sweden or Finland.

    • @lal12
      @lal12 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@redred7289 well that's not completly true, the wording "all the aid and assistance in their power" would include joining the fight.
