Thanks for this instructional video. I am getting ready to purchase a fence for my home, and I am debating between pressure treated pine, and red cedar. The cost for cedar is about 40% more...which is a lot. There is also an option for pressure treated pickets, and cedar boards for about 20% more. My question based on this video is, as long as you stain your pressure treated wood, does it help prevent or delay the inevitable wrapping and natural decay you might see over time, or does it only improve aesthetics with no real structural reinforcement ?
    Thanks!

Yeah, this video was great and answered all my questions, mainly, I was needing to know how to tell if wood was ready to be stained.

Thanks for explaining in a few short minutes the difference between wood sealers and transparent, semi-transparent, and solid stains. Now I know what I want to use for my pressure treated deck.

Thanks for explaining the stain variations. Very helpful!
I have a years-old, pressure-treated deck that's never been stained. I was planning on using TSP (trisodium phosphate) & bleach to get rid of the mold/mildew on it, then power wash it, and after it's dried, stain it with a semi-transparent stain. Are there any interim steps I should be aware of?
Are all of the stains oil-based? I assume oil-based is best, regardless, correct? And would a China bristle brush be the brush of choice, or a sponge brush like you used in the video?

Do they have a white stain? And what about wood that has already turned grey? How do I bring back the natural color or is it too late? It’s a teakwood turned grey patio lounge chair. I don’t know if it is treated or not but I doubt that it was treated. The wood seems dry. Thank you Sir.

Sorry for the delay getting back to you. We missed your comment! Yes, there are white deck stains. Teak won't have been treated. it's a naturally resistant wood, so treatment isn't required. Restoring the original color may not be possible. You could try scrubbing the chair with deck cleaner, but the color bleaching--which is caused by UV exposure and weather--may go pretty deep. Sanding might help, but it would take a lot of work and it might be tough to get to all the surfaces. Another option after cleaning is to stain the chair. There are colors that would mimic teak.

Kreg Tool thank you for taking your time to answer my question about my teakwood patio. I should have done some kind of protection before it started turning grey. I bought a stain but I’m not sure if it would help in preserving the wood. Ah I should have read your suggestion on staining! Thank you very much for your help.

Will this work for the brown pressure treated lumber?

The stain color will look different depending on the color of lumber you are using but, yes, you can stain it.
