  • Hayley ヘイリー 海莉 singing the National Anthems of the United Kingdom and New Zealand at the dedication ceremony of the New Zealand War Memorial on 11 November 2006 at Hyde Park, London. This took place in the presence of Her Majesty The Queen, other members of the Royal Family, the Prime Minister of New Zealand, Helen Clark and the Prime Minister of the UK, Tony Blair.
God Save The Queen and God Defend New Zealand have equal status as the official National Anthems of New Zealand.
This version recorded from Sky News TV by Steve Hayter for HWI, edited and belatedly uploaded by Dave Ludlow nearly three years late (oops!)

If we all pull together, and invest our shared values and interests in the Commonwealth, we can create a force for good, in the world. The Commonwealth has unlimited opportunities.

Dead men tell no tales 1914 Completely untrue. As I've jusr mentioned, they're about to get Buckingham Palace refurbished at a cost of £300 million +, something which was just approved by the government, and will be funded by the tax payer.
Every time you see the police or the army with the royals, that's tax payers' money in use.
Royal weddings, ditto. The public will be paying for Princess Eugenie's wedding despite her having no offical duties.
And if you die without a will within the Duchy of Lancaster, the queen can get your property. If you die in the Duchy of Cornwall, then Prince Charles is the one who will get it.

No, it is not the Commonwealth Nations that share the royal anthem. The Commonwealth Realms do. They're a bit different.
Comm. Realms recognize The Queen as their sovereign/monarch (in form of personal union with UK), e.g.: Canada, Australia, NZ.
Comm. of Nations is an organisation of the Comm. Realms plus countries which have past ties to Britain (but not necessarily have The Queen as their sovereign) e.g.: India, Malaysia. The Queen heads the Comm. of Nations, though.

On a per capita basis, New Zealand's losses were the highest in the Commonwealth - approximately one out of every 150 New Zealanders died on war service. for a small country especially during ww2 New Zealand stood up and went far and beyond the call of duty

Obviously what this is all about is unclear to some people who are not British or Commonwealth citizens. The ceremony is the dedication of the New Zealand war memorial in LONDON i.e. the centre of the Commonwealth. NZ is a fully self governing country that chooses to retain the Queen as head of state, like several other countries with links to UK. Also as American author Paul Theroux once wrote "London is the spiritual home of all English speaking people". He was less kind about it after he had lived there for a while but that's beside the point. The singer is Hayley Westenra, a NZ citizen as are most of the other participants. Will NZ become a republic? Possibly but unlikely for a long time - the republican movement here is small. God save Elizabeth the queen of Aotearoa/New Zealand

+Philip McCann Well, we have just had a referendum on whether to change our current flag which has the union jack in one quarter versus a new one said to be more representative of NZ. The old one won. We remain the South Pacific "Poms"

David H To us Britons, it's not a flag of ownership, more like a family name. Kiwis (the none aboriginals anyway) are Britons that set sail a long time ago. Our ancestors were very good at exporting their own across the planet :)

I respect NZ contribution to war efforts. Sadly the Crown did not embrace the "animalistic" contraptions the Maori called fortresses. WW1 would have gone a lot differently if NZ figured out how to have Europeans conquer them.

God save the queen holds equal status as new Zealand's national anthem. It is not a royal anthem, but a national anthem. And Tennessee44444, please don't compare us to the states. Living with queen Elizabeth as a constitutional part of our country hinders us in no way and offers us a deep sense of structure and roots. Unlike the states, we don't stab the country that allowed us to live here in the back. God save the queen!

This is beautiful. Though I am not Kiwi nor British, I do believe that the history and future of both nations are intertwined so much and in the most beautiful way, that to sever such a relationship would only mean to degrade the value of the commonwealth with an inferior republic. That they both have in common the Queen, not as a person, but as a symbol of both nations within an idea of civilization, so foreign to those who dislike it that they are unable to comprehend its value and meaning.
