Enya is a brilliant composer, but a mediocore singer. Her voice is pleasant, but her range is very limited and her calm tone comes from a lack of power - thanks to a bad technique. She IS a nice singer, but she is mainly a composer. A very good one, indeed. Hayley though is a far superior singer. She has lots of power, a natual perfect pitch, a good technique and a wide range. She isn't perfect, of course. And her version of May It Be is more energetic, less boring than Enya's. It's still very spiritual, but in a different way. And I don't mean to offend Enya, she is a very good performer in her own right.

We saw Haley at DAR in DC about this time, 2007. She was with Il Divo and had everyone in her hands when she sings. She's from New Zeland and does sound like the Celtic Women but she can make your heart soar with the clarity of her voice. Hope you enjoy and share.

I think people are missing the fact this lass is singing live here, with no advantages of studio technology including the echo chamber, all of which Enya uses to great effect on her recordings. Maybe that's why she's avoided live performances?

Mirana Luna, if that were so all music would die with the death if its first performer. It is not only the pitch that decides the voice type. A soprano(o not u) is bright and airy like sunlight. A mezzo is usually not much difference in pitch. More modern performances of say, the B minor Mass have the wonderful arias Laudamus Te and Agnus Dei, performed by light, bright mezzos.

However I feel that Hayley's voice is a little sharp for this song which, in my opinion, should be softer.. I, personally, prefer Enya's, and Lisa Kelly's versions of May it Be because of this.

There really is no comparison between Hayley and enya. This version to me is a beautifully sung song and Hayley has a fantastic vocal range. Very powerful and technically brilliant. Enyas voice isn't as strong as Hayley's I think we can all agree, but enyas has something that Hayley's just lacks. I know this is a live version. Enyas voice isn't the strongest, but it's that gentleness in her voice that makes enyas version still incredible. Enyas version just feels like it is delicately floating over the the skin, Hayley's is being sung and heard by the ears. Both versions are splendid and I'm not knocking either of them. I just had to say :P
Exactly what I was thinking; Enya's airy and light tone is better suited to the particular song than Hayley's heavier, classical sound (which is beautiful as well). Of course, I might be biased towards the original - but Enya's version is so ethereal...
If there is debate between who is the better singer of this song: Enya or Hayley: it is not a comparison that I like to see being made. Hayley has a more trained perhaps more powerful voice yes, Enya's is a bit more frail and soft, surely not as durable. But the version that I like better, not because it is sung any better than the other's is Enya's. That soft ethereal voice suits this song, trembling as it stream, and that is the kind of voice I think suits this song especially since it is the ending of one of The Lord of the rings movies. Unrushed and serene. I mean that's my opinion. Hayley's singing is absolutely lovely, a wonder to behold. But Hayley and Enya have different voices, both beautiful, yet different. I shall hope that people should just enjoy both versions and try not to let there be comparison voiced for it might only cause further debate or conflict. (Lol I'm a hypocrite but I'm also young xD)

You've got to be joking... this version is so generic compared to the original. The speed here is rushed, and the voice is something you hear anywhere and everywhere - nothing unique. Enya's version is wistful, ethereal, dreamy, perfect for a fantasy movie setting. And Enya's voice has so much more depth. This version isn't terrible on its own, but compared to the original, it's a pale copy.

Your comment about the speed being "right" is arguably inherently wrong, because the mood in the movie that the original version was made for was surely one that called for a slow, ethereal, fantasy-world feel. It is a decidedly unique sound, and very "un-generic", for a very "un-generic" movie. You can almost imagine elves making the song. And calling Enya's enunciation "slurred" is right out of left field.
People are really comparing Enya's studio version to this live version? There are SO many effects in Enya's studio version to make it sound the way it does. This live version had a bit of reverb added to the mic. That's it. Obviously the touched up studio version is going to sound more polished.
I just listened to Enya, Lisa Kelly, Alex and Hayley. I'm *so* glad I don't have to choose just one. I still think the Slane Castle "Celtic Woman, Reinforced!" configuration was as good as Celtic Woman is likely to ever be. Thank whatever gods there be for digital recording.

I must say it again. Hayley is true angel with angel voice, angel face and angel soul. All her songs are amazing. Bad, crazy, sometimes naked singers like Justin Bieber, Miley Cyrus, Nicki Minaj, many rappers etc. has Billion views, while beautiful talented Hayley with perfect voice and perfect luxury has just 7 million. Why? What is happening with todays people. I am frustrated.

The fact that someone is singing a song already recorded by someone else means nothing. Frank Sinatra (who, so far as I know, never wrote a song) was not trying to "imitate" anyone else. He was just singing. Here Haley is just singing a song. Written by someone else. Again. What's your point.

She's soo good. Right speed. Right voice. Right everything. I like this better than the Enya version. And the words are moving and full of hope.
You've got to be joking... this version is so generic compared to the original. The speed here is rushed, and the voice is something you hear anywhere and everywhere - nothing unique.
Enya's version is wistful, ethereal, dreamy, perfect for a fantasy movie setting. And Enya's voice has so much more depth.
This version isn't terrible on its own, but compared to the original, it's a pale copy.
Enya puts me to sleep and her enunciation is irritatingly slurred. Hayley Westenra's speed and sweet voice tops her big time. To each is own, huh?

Your comment about the speed being "right" is arguably inherently wrong, because the mood in the movie that the original version was made for was surely one that called for a slow, ethereal, fantasy-world feel. It is a decidedly unique sound, and very "un-generic", for a very "un-generic" movie. You can almost imagine elves making the song.
And calling Enya's enunciation "slurred" is right out of left field.

People are really comparing Enya's studio version to this live version? There are SO many effects in Enya's studio version to make it sound the way it does. This live version had a bit of reverb added to the mic. That's it. Obviously the touched up studio version is going to sound more polished.

I just listened to Enya, Lisa Kelly, Alex and Hayley. I'm *so* glad I don't have to choose just one. I still think the Slane Castle "Celtic Woman, Reinforced!" configuration was as good as Celtic Woman is likely to ever be. Thank whatever gods there be for digital recording.
