The Doctor and the TARDIS. It's one of TV's greatest ever double acts, with the TARDIS serving as timeship extraordinaire ever since "Doctor Who" debuted in 1963. So, what do we know about the backstory to this magnificent piece of time-travelling machinery? For this episode of Origins, we scour time and space for all the information on that iconic police box.

I love how they turned a plot device into a symbol. The police box. A symbol of helping wherever you can. That's who the Doctor is. A time travelling police officer. Bringing hope, justice, and help wherever they go.

I always liked the dr's gallery best. He goes around picking up famous paintings, just before they would be destroyed in their own timeline; and puts them on his wall.
One of the paintings is a Galaxy held in stasis, on the brink of going supernova.
That and the draft fact that there's ment to be a spare key hidden behind hide the "P" in the police box sign. :-)
Apparently the new incarnation of the TARDIS is capable of dispensing custard creams on request, a very handy and much needed feature.

The Tardis is a live but but the 1st doctor didn't know until the third story edge of Destruction.
The explanation of TARDIS was originally made up by Susan for a laugh, and not intended to be taken seriously.
Recent fans need to understand that a lot of the back story regarding Time Lords etc has been added. Originally he was an irascible old man who had escaped from his home world but the implication was that he had built the Tardis himself to do so. It was also implied that he had been some kind of noble or even a deposed ruler.
Dude I remember and there was like wheels and steel wheels inside the Tardis like an old steampowered or something I remember he was being chased and he had a young girl with him there was white horses and the had to get in and close the doors quick

I would have preferred clips of the few excursions into the TARDIS interior. Not nearly enough over the years. Only with Peter Davidson did they ever get around to showing companions' rooms. I want to see the kitchen.

Michael Holloway , there is a episode where the forth doctor walks around inside and goes through the hospital.
Yeaaaaaah. Well, that was the only time the swimming pool was actually shown, and shown being used by a curvy female, but it was too obvious that they spent zero effort filming it and immediately lost interest. It looked as though they had just trooped around the studio building, Tom Baker saying "Hello warehouse. Hello infirmary. Hello workshop." and then shot a couple scenes at a neighboring hotel pool. They actually made sets only in Baker's very last episode, and Davidson's first series, then it was all forgotten again till Smith, though one room in addition to the console room was made for the doomed US movie/pilot.
It's just another example of how they usually fail to flesh out the Doctor in any significant way. If the TARDIS is supposed to be the Doctor's (damn pronouns are problematic now) home why not show the Doctor at home often? It was done just once by those nasty Yanks with McCoy in the Doctor Who/McGann pilot. Guess they didn't get the memo from the BBC not to do that sort of thing. The Doctor is relaxing in a comfy chair with music, a cup of tea, and a book. Doesn't look like there are any plans for that now. Hard to imagine anyone relaxing in that new console room set.

Well in the episode “journey to the centre of the tardis” we see more rooms including the library and the swimming pool.

The Tardis which has a number of times been referred to as “like being a married couple!” And “get a room” and the Tardis is always referred to as a “she” or “her” the Doctor And Tardis are as old as each other and been the only constant in each other’s life.

@@samuelparker9882 I am going to guess that the Tardis and the word were dreamed up by either Sydney Newman or Verity Lambert who created the show, or to Anthony Coburn who was the original writer. Within the show it was susan who coined the word.

Here’s something that doesn’t make sense. If the tardis can discize themselves. Why not become human to act as a good hideout?

In 'Frontios' the TARDIS was destroyed by a ballistic strike, although repaired at the end of the story. However the original plan was the TARDIS would be destroyed and The Doctor would be forced to use other means to travel. In fact the ending of 'Frontios' sees the TARDIS get caught in a DALEK time corridor, originally The Doctor was to have been using a small ship and trying to create a corridor before inadvertently getting sucked in to the DALEK one. Which is why the TARDIS barely features in 'Resurrection of the DALEKs.' The reason the plan to destroy the TARDIS was aborted was that Peter Davidson decided to leave and pushing a new format and a new Doctor wasn't seen as a good idea.
