We want to share our passion for efficient, sustainable homesteading that brings the family together. On our homestead we do chemical-free gardening, grass-fed milk and beef, pastured eggs and broiler chickens, and free range children :) We love to go on adventures as a family, so if we're not workin on the farm, we're probably hiking or out getting ice cream. We're all into DIY, and being inventive and creative. We believe in homesteading that's sustainable, not just sustainable homesteading. In other words, we want to show you that homesteading doesn't have to wear you out to the point that you give it up. We've seen it happen, and almost came to that point ourselves. So go ahead and take a whack at that subscribe button if you'd like to join us on this crazy ride. Get ready to learn and be inspired! - บันเทิง
If one of your kiddos are doing the filming they are doing a great job!!! (Just wondering cause you are both in the video)❤❤❤🕊️
yes, when we're both in the video, our ten year old is filming:)
Wow, that’s amazing! I was also wondering who was doing the filming when you both are in the video…. Your 10 year old is incredible! You can be so proud!
I had the same thought.
@@morethanfarmers he knows what he's doing, what a blessing and great way to help the Family out!
Really love your channel ❤❤❤😌
Cody & Michelle. I am just blown away by the questions people ask you. I've heard of this from many other TH-cam's, and it just seems like everyone, wants to be everyone else's dictator of control. SO what if you are barefooted in the garden, of who cares what close or sandals you ware. I could care less if you were eating the dirt, and throwing cow pies at one-another. Why can't people just ask true questions of education, to better themselves in events they need to learn about.
I've been growing our foods for 50 yrs, I'm still learning.
About the need to mulch potatoes: The green on the potato is chlorophyll, which is not toxic BUT when chlorophyll is present the potato might have also produced solanin and chakonin and those are toxic (can cause nausea, stomach ache, diarrea). These substances are mostly concentrated near the skin, so peeling the potato will lower the amount. Still, it's a good idea to avoid eating spuds if they are green.
I love walking around barefoot around my yard too. I do occasionally step on a thorn or thistle needle, but it’s pretty rare. I can’t justify the plastic weed fabric, so I collect cardboard boxes from friends and family and then stop a tree company in the area to dump wood chips at my house if I see them working in the area. Also in Ohio!! To stake down the cardboard I use homemade stakes. My uncle gets his work shirts dry cleaned so he ends up with a lot of really thin metal hangers. So while I’m watching TV or doing something mindless, I grab a pair of wire clippers, and start cutting the angled corners and I end up with mini yard stakes/pins.
I LOVE being barefoot outside and in the garden ❤ getting grounded is everything ✌🏽❤️😁
I just love seeing the two of you working together. That is what my husband and I used to do ; however two and a half months ago he went home to be with our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ after a battle with cancer. Now when I work out in the gardens alone I cherish the beautiful memories I have of my precious husband and I working together. Take a lot of photos. You wouldn't regret it.😊 Canada
I'm so sorry for your loss ❤🙏🙌🙏💔
Leaf mulch is truly golden and free!! The sun was eating my 9B garden alive and despite having a light layer of leaf mulch I went back and added a thick layer and it has saved my garden. The leaves really help with holding in moisture and depressing weeds. Your secret sauce does work!!
We will try that this year. We have 80% raised beds, and I'm still going to use them. I think if we could use 40% shade cloth, it would help the garden live longer. before it kills the plants with the UV.
@@coryrusk6277I just added 40% shade cloth to my raise bed garden in zone 9b. And waiting for another shade cloth for the other side. You can’t believe the difference in the side that has the shade cloth. The plants are noticeably darker and leaves aren’t wilting, great decision I made. The other plants are doing ok, but can’t wait to add the shade cloth to them.
Agreed! I’m in 9a in Texas I just don’t use certain leaves that don’t compost well. They just sit on the soil for more than a season and it’s a slippery mess
I find your family so calming, besides leaning so much.
I would remove the leaves on the landscape fabric since that will turn into soil and grass will grow through the fabric and you'll have to replace it yearly. I lay the Dewitt fabric down and nothing else.
The filming of this video is better than 90% of the Homesteaders l watch. Seriously. Was it a professional, or one of your children? Good job whoever 👏 filmed!!! God Bless you all and ☦️ many prayers. Nurse Judi in Scottsdale AZ and Eucharistic Minister ☦️ 🙏🏻 💙 ❤️
I think they alternate the dad and mom
Their oldest films a lot too.
You guys doing great. On the first say i noticed your channel, i watched 15 videos within 2 days. Thank you for sharing valuable tips for us❤️greetings from İstanbul, Turkey.
Those leaves are more than just mulching. In the long run they'll be incorporated into the soil as organic manure. The simplicity and hands-on approach in your day to day work is so great. This is what I call back to basics in terms of bringing up your family and I wish you the best as you go on. I'm from Zimbabwe and I buy 100% into your philosophy. I'll keep on following for inspiration and hope we'll engage in exchange and more correspondence in the future coz m also up the same track though a bit behind in a number of aspects. Much respect and all the best. Keep them coming
I’m so happy I stumbled across this channel. I’ve been so hooked the past week watching. Makes me stay motivated in my garden.
About the mulch on the TARP. I use Cedar Chips. They last about 4-5 years before biodegrading. Cheaper than pavers and feel OK on the feet.
Hello! Im a single mom and i love this time of year, growing season! Im proud of you guys for actually accomplishing what you do! I try more and more gardening every year. I find it so satisfying. Wishing you guys all the best and thanks for teaching us!
When I found this channel a few months back, I binge watched. They are a lovely family. Michelle and Cody are full of all sorts of information. I have been gardening since I was young with the family. I'm now sixty-six and have learned plenty about the herbs that I grow. They won't disappoint ❤
Weed fabric should be enough, easy to walk on without adding leaves. Hope iT all works ok. Appreciate all the tips. Michelle is so right about a huge garden. I had 100 tomato plants one year and 200 the next. Wasted a lot of tomatoes and many did not do well. Only 22 this year. I'm 70 and can hardly walk in the garden. Wishing I had tall raised beds.
Living in rural Southern Australia I am lucky enough to have a garden all year round, therefore, my garden has never been as large as yours. I've just picked the last of my tomatoes at the beginning of this month (it's winter now). At the start of August my asparagus will be ready. I almost always garden barefoot, but I grew up in the country rarely wearing shoes at home, even in winter, so barefoot gardening is normal to many of us.
Tbh I love that I'm seeing some sponsorships on your channel, I love you guys and I think you deserve to get something in return for the great videos you make and maybe it can go towards that family getaway to the woods💕
Greetings from Healesville Victoria Australia….cold here at the moment, but really enjoy having found your u-tube, to inspire my plans for spring.
In the past I used to put saw-dust/shavings on the paths with a layer of chicken manure in between.
The next year it was nicely rotted and top dressed the beds.
We’re so lucky to have this amazing facility to share all around the world, and learn from each other.
Blessings to your beautiful family 🎶💕🐸
We really love how you capture the movement and energy of each moment in how you film it. Every shot is busy, in a good way. Very creative and unique. Keep up the great content.
You guys are my favorite I love to see your garden and how you preserve your food and feed your family. Blessings for your family from the father above.
I love the bare footing also. Bringing your skin in contact with the soil is healthy. Keep on keeping on.
I watch a lot of homesteading videos and I really love how 'Real' you two are. I learn so much and you break it all down for us. Thank you!!!
Looks good but I'd suggest getting the leaves off and just leaving the garden fabric. Stuff is going to start growing in the leaves, especially next year when they are broken down more. It looks good though!! ❤
My neighbor contacted a tree service company and they dump sawdust from the cut trees in his backyard every so often. It's saved the tree company money to not dump at the Landfill . FYI. I'm using some around my raised beds. 😊
Ive been a nerd my whole life,... so lets go down this research rabbit hole! 🙌
Pavers will generate more heat and increase the water requirement during the hottest part of the summer.
I used your trick for growing carrots under a board- THANKS FOR THE TIP!!
Ive been sleeping on a grounding mat for years. I had a feeling you both were going barefoot for grounding purposes. I love it!
Really loved how you answered the sandal question. ❤ Going barefoot strengthens your foot muscles. 💪🏼
I'm always barefoot in the garden and honestly not only the grounding but also my legs and knees feel much better at the end of the day 💯
Thanks for all of your growing gardening knowledge and sharing your best tips and tricks which help us all out.
I love your videos so much! So many helpful tips and tricks. I enjoy your energy and how realistic you are💕
My experience with mulching on top of landscape fabric has been that eventually, when it breaks down, you will have all the same weeds on top of the fabric growing in the broken down mulch . When I put fabric around my bee hives and raspberries this year I didn’t cover it with anything. It is doing much better than the fabric I covered with mulch over the past couple of years. Maybe you will have better luck in that than me. But that’s been my experience. 🤷🏻♀️ beautiful gardens by the way!
One of my most favorite homestead channel. So real and authentic. Watching from the Caribbean.
A friend recommended your channel and I am hooked. Love seeing your faith shine through all you do and how you raise your family. I am from NW Ohio and take regular trips to Holmes County. Made a stop at Berlin Seeds and can't wait to go back next spring for my garden seeds. Also picked up supplies for our fruit trees. Blessings to you all and keep the wonderful videos coming!!
Love it. Everything looked so neat and clean
Those leaves look like they are breaking down into a rich mulch already. I enjoyed walking in my garden barefoot until I stepped on a hidden nail and had to get a tetanus shot. Also, I stepped on a red spider who bit me, thankfully he was not toxic and I felt bad for him as he limped away. You are doing everything right in the homesteading life and learn the best methods along the journey, thanks for sharing .
Thanks for sharing your harvest
Love all your great advice. I have been gardening for a short time and get so frustrated at times. The ducks look happy with the outside run and pool.
I love love love the leaves that you put down. What a feeling to walk on!!!! Great job.
I'm getting so many ideas and inspiration from yall. I love how you do your videos. Love the shout out to Gold Shaw Farms!
Everything is looking amazing guys!!! Fantastic job!!!! Two years ago I made a small garden next to my house. Just for some “extras” lol, I doubled up cardboard boxes, overlapping, and added woodchips on top. It’s crazy but I have gotten ZERO WEEDS still!!!! I’m still shocked. I get a random weed or two around the edges but whoa. I’ve tried everything else for 18 years and nothing works like this. Truly amazing. I’ll never go back. Now I want to find leaves bc it looks gorgeous in your gardens too.
Y’all are such a good team. Makes me happy to see you work together so well ❤️🙏👏🏼☀️🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱🌱
I love watching y’all grow! Everything is looking awesome.
Fantastic work guys!
I am literally going to be doing the same thing around my garden beds of putting the weed fabric down. So much time spent on battling weeds outside the garden is so frustrating. Its one of the projects ill be tackling this year. Great work!
Everything looks amazing. 😊❤
Awesome video guys.
Thanks!
Garden looks beautiful! Well done.
I loved this video! Especially your encouragement to improve a bit every year. And the advice to do a smaller garden well. Thank you!
You two do your share of the work plus a whole lot more! Looking really good in the garden. Thanks
Love all your great advice. 🤩
You’re both doing great!!!
I just canned 17 quarts of green beans...took me 2.5 hours to pick them. I use both leaves and grass clippings and it is amazing how quickly it changed my red clay soil.
You folks are awesome great to see n hear young ppl do what you do
Very cool. Wishing you and your family a happy and joyful weekend.
You guys are helping me more than you know! I’m getting ready to move back to several acres on the family farm in SE Ohio and I hope on using much of the knowledge I’m getting from your channel.
Wonderful, thank you! ❤
Appreciate the content, just got an acre just outside of springfield, this has inspired me to be more self sufficient.
My wife Shirley and I love your videos. We live in Savannah Georgia. We are getting ready for planting some vegetables in the spring. We wish we had more room in our backyard. We want to have more healthy food choices. Love your recipes. Mack & Shirley
Michelle's shirts are always so cute omg 💗 love the new video!! I have learned so much from you guys :') One of my most favorite channels on youtube!
Great video! I appreciate your content.
You ever try grass clippings to cover the grass? It creates a great barrier, and you have plenty of yard grass.
I've used leaf mulch/mold in my garden beds for a couple decades and it forms fantastic soil.
Beautiful garden. We have had a garden for the past 40 years. We use grass cutting as mulch for our garden. It keeps the weeds down and is easy on bare feet.
Beautiful video and informative 😊
Cody and Michelle im sending hugs and kisses all the way from south africa!Do your thing ,people will always talk whether you do good or bad ,here i do what i please ,i walk barefoot and i can bath and put on pj's ,i literally don't care what others say,i only focus that im comfortable.
I enjoy your videos so much and hats off to your 10year old child that is filming and capturing everything.
And your ducks have grown so so much! You guys are living my dream!
And all the best with saving up for new cars(upgrading!)
This is great content and great editing… keep it up
amazing video!
A lot of home-gardeners in CA used DG (decomposed granite) for walkways between planters.
It's a pretty light yellow and easy on the feet.
A layer of gravel over weed cloth, tamp it down with a tamper, level, add decomposed granite--tamp and level.
Good Morning!!! I just love your videos!! Michelle you are Thee Strawberry Queen!!🤯🍓 Your Garden is so Beautiful!! Keeping it real & giving sage advise💚 Thanks!!
Love your content!
Love watching your show. I get great ideas from it. In relation to pavers around your raised beds, I wouldn’t recommend it unless you are going to concrete them in. The weeds grow through them and it is so time consuming to get the weeds out. We ended up pulling up the paves and now just simply mow around the garden beds.
Around my garden beds I did weed paper with small bark over it and I love it. Looks clean, zero weeds and it's soft enough that I can walk bare foot over it
you guys are so amazing and my inspriation. I have been strugling to keep up with my garden this year and I don't have as much help as you guys do, nor the experience. You guys are such a wholesome and friendly family. That "I'm done" from your daughter melted my heart! I did just have a question though. That weed paper you put down by your raised beds, is that permanently there? Besides the fact of replacing it, but I mean the location.
Wonderful for me…. I was just thinking I’m going to watch a rerun on one of your videos because I’ve watched them all and just wanted to hang out with you all… ha ha and lookie here a new video yay for me. Have a sweet day, Lisa
Smart ideas to make things work for you.
such a great video❗ Wow, your strawberries are prolific‼ The duck enclosure is just what they needed. your garden looks so good! the weed barrier and leaves look nice. Love to see the family in the garden. Sweet~💚
AWESOME video. Thank you for all the time you put into showing us how you approach daily life. I use XeroShoes and I L O V E them. I have knee, back, ankle and tendon issues and with Xeroshoes it has improved so much. Happy Gardening!!!
For paths around raised beds I lay brown cardboard and top with wood chippings. Both available for free and easy to top up the wood chip next year. Love your videos!
every video is a real joy and always contains so much good advice from your many years of experience. Thank you so much for allowing me to continue learning from you. Sunny greetings from Munich
You are so welcome! ❤️
@@morethanfarmers ❤ thank you so much
Love your sandals as I was wondering if it was hers lol looks great proud of you guys very inspired I now started work on my lot of land and we came across your videos and we are learning so much
I just remulched my garden yesterday.
You are such a great inspiration. I wish I could live on the land as you do!
I think the ducks need a larger pool! They love water! They use water for cleaning their feathers, bills etc, ❤
i like this lenght of video best. sometimes the longer once i leave watched halfway and while i try to come back to them i don't always. do what you enjoy and the audience follows. keep it up. doing amazing. :)
Garden beautiful
Great job showing all of your amazing work.
I'm wary of pavers... We had some at our old place and they constantly had weeds coming up in between. Please make sure you do your research before you in
invest in them.
They might also increase the temp of your garden beds.
Everytime I watch one of your videos you amaze me with your ingenuity to tackle situations. Yes, the heat is awful. I live out west and we are having a heatwave ➡ 109°F 🥵. I get up at 3-4 am to get things done. It is good that you are drinking electrolyte drinks. Working in the heat one needs something more that water. I have been thinking that the leaves would do a better job than pavers. I have pavers and rocks. Rocks you definitly do not want. Pavers get really hot and the sun reflects off of them. Pavers are also slippery when wet. I use leaves from my trees and neighbor's trees which blows into my yard. Leaves are a better choice and they are free. Save that money for your new truck. Strawberries 😋.
Hello beautiful Urbana. My favorite area around here. Good job !
Morgan is in Vermont 😆
Strong work.
Thank you for your knowledge ❤ your channel. Trena here from Florida
I love your video so much thank you for share this
You are socorrect about barefoot in the garden. I cant because of our yard and rocks etc. we have thorns to. GOOD FOR YOU! Grounding is wonderful
I love the black fabric just as it is! Nice clean look! Then you can leaf blow them off and keep them clean.
Lol 😂😂 the comment about em sandals had me cracking up. But yes theres something therapeutic about walking barefoot
I’d love to see Michelle make a homemade cheesecake! Imagine how creamy and amazing that would be!! Love you guys, you’re such an inspiration for this small town, TN aspiring homesteader ❤
Barefoot in the garden is one of my favorite things. I take my shoes off before I go into my garden more than I do within my own house. Lol
