a Hawk catches a Duck

  • Here's a wildlife thriller my wife and I witnessed in Constitution Gardens, Washington DC in May 2018.
    I noticed a hawk patrolling the area around the pond - all of a sudden it went down. As I went to see where it landed - I found it sitting in the bush in an awkward position. Then I figured out he grabbed a duck. All that time the hawk was harassed by a red-winged blackbird, who actually ruined the hawk's plans.

    Birds are amazing. I’m still studying to be an ornithologist. That poor female mallard just survived a hawk attack and now she’s bombarded by horny males trying to mount her. If you ever notice a hawk or an eagle in the area, watch all the crows and songbirds band together and harass them. It’s very interesting. Similar to when humans discover a sex offender or a murderer. It’s like they all form an alliance against a menace to society.

    • @spindalis79
      @spindalis79 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      The behavior you mentioned is called "mobbing." It is also a good way to find smaller owl species such as Eastern Screech, or Northern Saw-Whet Owls. Often if a raucous flock of songbirds is hanging around a tree or shrub, there is some species in there they want out. In the case of this video the assailant seems to be a juvenile Red-shouldered Hawk. Note the windows in the primaries as well as the long banded tail and extensive pale supercillium. The Crows in the background are Fish Crows due to their very nasal call. This pinpoints the video taking place somewhere in the American south-central/southeast.

    Tough life for the Mallard female duck who was sitting on her eggs. First gets attacked by the Hawk as she was an easy target. Fortunately the black birds helped distract the hawk and let her escape. Possibly saved the eggs from Hawk as well. But then the female had to face the army of male Mallards (drakes) who were all trying to lay with her. I am not sure if she would have survived and nest would also have been destroyed.

      Males will force the female to mate with them. In a weakened state she'd be a easier target. However I only seen a single male by her, which could just be her original mate guarding her fiercely.

    Birds can harass raptors fairly risk-free by diving at them from above - whether on the ground or in the air. Eagles' and hawks' kill with their feet, if you can stay away from them you'll be OK. It's like when you see hyenas nipping at the rear ends of lions - staying away from the dangerous end. I saw (in a zoo) an arctic fox bite the back legs of a huge bear. By the time the bear swung round, the fox was well out of reach.

    The hawk also needs some food. Ducks are not endangered. But quite surprising that the hawk did not immediately killed the duck
