Ep 46 Sailing Solo from Wales to France

  • I sail from Milford Haven Wales to La Rochelle France; I cross the English Channel in a near gale; I divert from Brest to Port Joinville France due to very high wind conditions; I discuss how I use navigation plotters (or not); and I arrive at my home marina of La Rochelle, France.

    It is important to understand that this passage was very very difficult indeed. Not just for a single hander ... but also for many crews. When passage planning it's important that the cruise is well within the capabilities of the crew. Of course experience and knowledge of your boat is a prquisite whenever you put to sea but what I'm really talking about, regarding this excellent film, is Patrick's complete understanding of his own endurance and knowing his limits. Patrick has all this in abundance. This cruise did not happen by accident. It would not happen without an awful lot of thought and hard earned experience. Take inspiration from a very very good sailor but as they say on the TV 'Don't try this at home'. At least not before your certain you've done the knowledge. It is extremely rare that a well found boat will let a crew down. The crew is the weakest link. Bravo Patrick. Your made of stern stuff. Fair winds stay safe ... James

    • @patricklaine6958
      @patricklaine6958  5 ปีที่แล้ว +31

      Thanks for this important contribution James. Please, please, ensure that you and your boat are capable of the challenge of the passage. If in doubt, an extra few days in port is a small price to pay. How do you know if you are up to the challenge? Start with lessons with a professional, and then take many small steps --- local coastal sailing; then longer coastal sailing; then an overnight; then a short 'blue water' passage, etc. Taking your boat, or your crew to sea before your are fully confident you can handle the seas, wind, navigation or traffic is poor seamanship. Thanks again James for emphasizing this important consideration.

      What, he has a sense of humour? ........ As much as I love the sailing, the boat skills, the constant challenges and the “cool” intelligent analysis and planning/problem solving etc [all delivered SO smoothly ] - it’s that bleeding personal charm, that sense of humour, the subtle & sometimes mischievous asides, compounded by the learned connections [some I only pick up afterwards in the comments]. It’s a potent and addictive mix - am I a fan?...hooked? That would have to be a Oui! Masterful entertainment and education in how to be a top gun/gent. My biggest respect a vous, Patrick.

    To answer your question, the sailboat (or any sailboat). I've been on cruise ships. If I want casinos and cinemas and live stage performances and black tie dinners with an ocean view, I'll go to Atlantic City for a lot less money. I'd rather do last night's stew for breakfast, a rocking berth and chores to do 24/7 on a small bluewater. And, I'd give my left (personal item) to see Iceland again. God bless/fair winds!

    Thank you again Patrick, it's so revitalizing to discover videos only one day old! Makes me feel closer to your adventures. Personal, out of subject, annoying questions still arise, like (excuse my boldness) "Are you living alone in La Rochelle?" and all the wonderings depending on that first answer, if you feel like answering. Because of what you wrote before, feeling closer to your family when you were alone offshore. As for myself, I am going to get married in August (at the age of 62!) and I feel great about it, knowing at the same time that unless something really unpleasant happened, I will never sail alone. Well, as long as we sail, but of course one has to deal with his/her partner projetcs and priorities in terms of freedom.
    Keep well, have a nice deserved rest, and feed us with more wonderful videos!

    Well Patrick, I sailed every step of the way with you on that fantastic journey to and from Iceland. I just happened to come across the first leg of your adventure and couldn't get away from it until you got back to your home port. Thank you so much for sharing your experience with us and happy sailing to you in the future.

      Thanks Eddie. I rally enjoyed that Iceland trip. I probably should have done it 4-5 weeks later in the year for a bit warmer weather and more blue skies, but it was great fun anyway.
