  • I sail solo to and from Ireland's famous Fastnet Rock, a distance of about 1000 nm. I experience everything from dead calm to near gale conditions, including a stressful crossing of a shipping channel in a fog bank. This was a 'Bucket List' sail for me.

      @patricklaine6958 hi Patrick, love all your videos and adventures and you are a very accomplished seaman, one thing I'd like to ask is, how did you get into sailing and why did you change from your Bavaria, she seems a lovely yacht

    I truly enjoyed that sail. I consulted no charts, called no coastguard, filled no diesel tanks, said no goodbyes, talked to no insurance companies, I didn't even get off the couch. Thank you Patrick for a wonderful journey.

    Hey, that was a nice homage to Joni Mitchell. You're a class act man. In a world filled with decrepit souls and even worse boats, you are an inspiration that the sailor still has salt in his blood. I may never see Horta or Fastnet cuz I abide on the far side of the world, but your cruises bring me close enough. Thanks,

      @@patricklaine6958 It wasn't you in that F/A-18, was it? In the speed check story? Ha! ;-) Unfortunately, Brian is one of the many, admirable pilots I didn’t get to meet during my career, but it was working with military folk like him that made me feel, every day, that my job was always worth doing. In saying this I’m reminded of a time I was sitting with a fellow aerospace scientist at a work dinner and said, ‘If there’s one flyer I wish I’d met, it’s Bob Stanford-Tuck.’ He replied, ‘Oh, I sat next to him at a dinner, just like we are now. It was quite amazing to talk with him about some of his Battle of Britain experiences.’ My jaw dropped. :-) Such brave, strong and honourable people. Inspiring.

    Don't think I've ever seen anyone go around the rock and dressed so good. Nice one. Good call on the TSS - rushing and taking chances are what get sailors into trouble and you waited until comfortable. Same on the reefing (or lack of) at night - only you know the boat, the weather and yourself and you make the call. Great video Patrick.

    Being a shore bound matelot in a landlocked country I have been yearning for the briny once more. For the moment at least, and to a degree unfortunately, vicariously through others. There are many quality VLOGers in the realm however there are none (in my mind) that are quite as on the money with articulating the beauty and the anger that our blue mistress summons to ensure our everlasting submission. Vents clairs et mers suivantes dans toutes vos aventures Patrick. Thank you.

    Nice trip Patrick! I just did my first "proper" single handed passage - from L'Aber-Ildut to Plymouth. 28 hours, 20 of which were in fog (another first!). Feeling pretty pleased with myself I have to say.
    Regarding heaving to for the TSS - I think I'd have done that as well. Like you say, you'd have gone across in the dark so why not the fog. Well, fog is a different ball game isn't it? Kinda spooky. I was looking at my AIS about every ten minutes!

      @patricklaine6958  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Sincere congrats on the first major solo SMS. You chose a particularly challenging one! Bravo. Also, I consider AIS critical safety gear now. I would not leave on a long passage if it were out of service.

    Considering all the travel/entry-restrictions: you should consider coming to Sweden, everything is open, and the archipelago is fantastic this time of year. But you do need a heater onboard if you don't have one, the nights are getting cold.

    Not reefing at night systematically: Good decision! Reefing or not reefiing is a decision that should depend on many factors. Certainly not just light. For those who believe reefing is always a safe choice: A boat can sometimes roll a lot more when it doesn't carry enough sail area. Excessive roll can be dangerous in various ways.

    Captain, Another perfect travelogue. But let me suggest another bit of verse:
    Under the wide and starry sky,
    Dig the grave and let me lie.
    Glad did I live and gladly die,
    And I laid me down with a will.
    This be the verse you grave for me:
    Here he lies where he longed to be;
    Home is the sailor, home from sea,
    And the hunter home from the hill.

    An interesting fact for you is that the name of the rock in English comes from the Norse Hvasstein-ey (literally Sharp toothed Island), whereas the original Irish name which predates that is a bit less inspiring and is simply 'An Charraig Aonair' (literally The Lone Rock).
