I remember dancing to The Macarena when I was young and naive and I still do it occasionally. I still prefer to think of it as an innocent and fun song. They would have been surprised and amazed by the PlayStation and N64. That chick born in 94 probably had a PS3 in grade school.

I mean I remember very little before I was 9-10 years old which makes it not until '95 or '96 until I truly remembered my childhood. Having been born in 1986 and having spent most of my childhood in the 90's, I consider myself a 90's kid. The macarena was extremely popular when I was a preteen. Then, in college, I went on tour with the choir to Barcelona over spring break. One night in a bar, they started playing the macarena, and naturally, all of us American 90's kids, now in our twenties, squealed with excitement and got up to dance. Apparently, the dance had never reached Spain, because the locals had no idea what we were doing. They enjoyed it, though.
Oh it reached Spain but they knew what the song was about and it was not very popular, and the dance was just something we all laughed and pointed at the Americans for doing.

I'm a spaniard and I'm an 80's kid myself, so I can tell you the english version is soooo tamed compared with the original spanish version. Making a long story short, it talks about a girl ( Macarena) , a complete snob despite being a county girl ( Macarena and Vitorino are both very old-fashion names, rarely used nowadays, except in some very conservative, rural families from Andalusia). She tries to apear stylish and cosmopolitan, but at the end of the day, what she acomplish to be is being a pretentious wannabe who cheats her pretty common boyfriend ( whom she despises) with two other guys in a day of special significance for spanish men in the 90: taking the oath of loyalty at the end of your military service term.

Having been born in 1986 and having spent most of my childhood in the 90's, I consider myself a 90's kid. The macarena was extremely popular when I was a preteen. Then, in college, I went on tour with the choir to Barcelona over spring break. One night in a bar, they started playing the macarena, and naturally, all of us American 90's kids, now in our twenties, squealed with excitement and got up to dance. Apparently, the dance had never reached Spain, because the locals had no idea what we were doing. They enjoyed it, though.
Oh it reached Spain but they knew what the song was about and it was not very popular, and the dance was just something we all laughed and pointed at the Americans for doing.

I'm a spaniard and I'm an 80's kid myself, so I can tell you the english version is soooo tamed compared with the original spanish version. Making a long story short, it talks about a girl ( Macarena) , a complete snob despite being a county girl ( Macarena and Vitorino are both very old-fashion names, rarely used nowadays, except in some very conservative, rural families from Andalusia). She tries to apear stylish and cosmopolitan, but at the end of the day, what she acomplish to be is being a pretentious wannabe who cheats her pretty common boyfriend ( whom she despises) with two other guys in a day of special significance for spanish men in the 90: taking the oath of loyalty at the end of your military service term.

I think facing realities for the first time as a preteen-teenager or going through hardships for the first time (with that i mean in terms of dealing with things in a capacity greater than a small child) I was born in the early 80's and therefor I don't claim the 80's as I was too young and innocent (aka ignorant) to have absorbed much or have any of the products or TV shows geared toward my age group. I am now in my 30's and have noticed my age group isn't the main focus anymore as we are getting too old to be targeted by ads the way I have been used to, your age group is top now. soon you too will feel old as popularism goes to the next generation.
