In the mid seventies, on BBC 2, in Britain, they used to show foreign films on Sunday Nights. I saw My night's at Maud's as a kid,but only realised it during the final scene on the beach⛱️. It stayed with me all this time, then my mind trotted back, and I remembered. The unsaid and the ambiguity of French films always made me think as a kid. This wonderful film, with its snowy settings in Clermont-Ferrand, the land of Blaise Pascal, whose philosophy is the motive for the film, but applied to love, always intrigued my childish mind.
The first half or so is so captivating and the second half is less so and I definitely feel that’s by design. This feels like a lot to wrap my brain around but it’s like he prefers the monotony of the second life and that’s okay. Like even down to both halves being about staying at a girls house for the night and being on top of the mountain with the different girls. One scenario feels magical and the other feels plain at least to me. But I don’t think he would’ve lasted very long with maud based on her values and if he pursued her instead of the blonde he would’ve been left wondering what could’ve been with the blonde.
Thank you for the fine synopsis. You can watch this film a dozen times and get more out of it, every time - and I do. I love the scene where the couple finally meets. MCB handles it so well, putting JLT a bit off balance, but you have to persist with a woman so beguiling as she is.

One of my all time favourite films
Easily the best of Rohmer's Six Moral Tales. Outstanding film.

Fantastic analysis! Thank you :)
Analysis right on the nerval spot of the film, Eric himself, in a way, called himself a hegelian.
Underrated video
Very interesting and well done.
Francoise is also in Stardust Memories
