a pity it was cut short. saw nearly all Rohmer's films years ago. haven't watched in years. been thinking of watching again. may start with "maud" (first to impress). v interesting to hear Trintignant talk with conviction...I have a dvd of "vivement dimanche" where there's a bonus, featuring commentary, and he says nothing about the film. Indifferent (basically implies its crap and he remembered nothing about it). Here (5 yrs after making film), though, he seems to have been v engaged with the story, even if he didn't identify with character. He is one of those actors who looks the same in every film yet can seem a total different character. Maud performance is great, but see him play a sinister role and it's hard to believe that he can play such an opposite with similar facial expression etc. understand and don't disagree with all the talk of authenticity here but, you know, there was always characters in rohmer's films I couldn't believe, even if they were likeable in the film, e.g. francoise (marie-christine barrault) in this one. "margot" in summer tale...his best/most believable characterisation of the usual "young woman" character in his films? maybe. but, you know, there is the "moral choices" aspect to his stories but the characters can seem paralysed in will to the point of indifference. the girl throws the guy off balance and..and I think I've just lost track of my thoughts like a rohmer character.

I like maud, but my faves are love in the afternoon, and full moon in paris.

I've just discovered that the actress who played Francoise in this film was the niece of the lead actor in Les Enfants du Paradis (1945) and the theatre and actors in the latter film really existed c.1830. Isn't Wikipedia great? This video is pretty good too.

I understand nothing about French but JLT's sudden smile at Eric Rohmer (???) is quite funny to me 😂
