The cost you pay of not choosing to share your thoughts on a popular film with millions of current viewers, to instead bring us some beautiful obscure artwork from the past, to share an important point for the present, is not unnoticed and unappreciated. It is deeply noticed and appreciated.
Cléo from 5 to 7 is one of the highest regarded films of the French New Wave, which is perhaps the most famous film movement of the 20th Century. This ain’t obscure.
You've missed another small detail in the shift, at 6:00 when she looks at herself in the mirror she says "Je ne peux même pas lire ma propre peur" which translates literally to "I can't even READ my own fear" and the writings on the mirror are in mandarin (I think), as if her reflection became foreign language to her, she can't read herself anymore.
I like how in several scenes we see Cleo through a glass like in the store and train cart. How we see Cleo but also see reflections of us looking back at us.
Chill out, what ya yellin' for? Lay back, it's all been done before. And if you could only let it be, you will see that I am the funniest YouT*ber of all time. Admit it, my dear follow*r rea
The tarot card Death, despite understably feared, is not a card meaning the end permanently. The card respresents closing one door and opening another. It fits the theme of this film really well!
Wow, I already thought of Cleo de 5 a 7 as an irrefutable masterpiece; I was taken by: it's themes os existentialism, the male gaze, destiny, the mesmerising cinematography and the music by Michel Legrand. But you managed to find meaning in symbolisms that went all over my head Good job!
Cleo de 5 a 7 is by far her best film, but she made a lot of great narrative films that were criminally underappreciated. But her true call was definitely documentary filmmaking, some of the most vivid and joyful documentaries I've ever seen.
I’ve thought about it a lot over the years and I think Cleo from 5 to 7 is probably the greatest of all French New Wave movies and probably the best movie of the 1960s... which is a tall fucking order
Was a minute in when I stopped and that night we watched the film itself. This is the kind of analysis that makes you realize the depth of craft and the complex structure underpinning such a deceptively simple premise. Thank you for again reminding me of the power of art.
I'm far from an expert of arts, but this is one of the few older films I've ever seen. After seeing your analysis about it here, I'm keen to watch it again with a new perspective that I didn't see the first time. Thanks for teaching me and many other about art, and opening up a world of emotions in the process.
That moment Florence felt free, I felt her joy within me. Which is big as I haven’t felt joy in a while. I simply must watch this film with my sister, we both adore French films
Oh I'm glad I found this, Varda is easily one of my favourite directors. Her eye is phenomenal, it's rare to find someone who films humanity and people so well
One of my favorite youtubers is still alive! Your insights on all things film expose the realities of our experiences as human, opening minds, and changing hearts.
I've been following you for a while and it's the first Nerdwriter video that brought me to tears. Your writing and editing are phenomenal as always. Thank you for introducing me to this beautiful movie, I learn so much when I watch your essays !
Good show ol'man! It's good to see a celebration of Mme Varda's work. We see many celebrations of the other significant filmmakers of the new french wave, but it is most excellent to her masterpiece held up in such high esteem.
I fell in love with French cinema and culture because of Agnes and her husband Jacques Demy. is one of my favorite movies ever, that I still find time to watch at least once a year. Thank you for the beautiful essay, you have never failed to amuse me with your ways of analyzing things. I don't dare to call myself a cinephile yet, but your videos sure make me appreciate movies and art, in general, even more than I did before.
Thank you. I have already watched this film, but your video made me realise so many subtle things I had missed. Please keep doing this as long as you can.

YES INDEED
obscure isn't the right word. this is a cult classic.
HEAR HEAR!!

This!
its a good day when nerdwriter posts
What does nerdwriter do in addition to these videos?
@@highwind1991 I wonder that too. He used to post more regularly and I wonder if he’s working on a book or something?
yes much better
It will be a better day when Nerdwriter plots.
So true
You've missed another small detail in the shift, at 6:00 when she looks at herself in the mirror she says "Je ne peux même pas lire ma propre peur" which translates literally to "I can't even READ my own fear" and the writings on the mirror are in mandarin (I think), as if her reflection became foreign language to her, she can't read herself anymore.
Well caught!!
Every time you analyze art, it's art in and of itself.
I like how in several scenes we see Cleo through a glass like in the store and train cart. How we see Cleo but also see reflections of us looking back at us.
Might also be a metaphor for how she feels commodified and simply like a "product" to be seen through a store window
Or how men see women (in the beginning at least) 💔
When the night was darkest, the promised video essayist returned *happy nerd noises*

Whenever I see "happy ____ noises" or "sad ____ noises" I can only picture a face slobbering all over itself as it makes nasally honking sounds.

Yes!! I t makes me crazy how often this is misinterpreted!

we did not deserve Agnès Varda. i miss her more every day.
omg i looove agnes varda’s movies and documentaries and i am so happy that nerdwriter made a (presumably) fascinating video essay about it :)

With a soothing voice he comes telling the stories nobody heard about revealing to others there's more to life than a 9-5 job. Thanks nerdwriter ❤

One of the greatest films ever made, you should check it out if you haven't.
@@luismarioguerrerosanchez4747 I already checked and it's not on Netflix and the library is closed bc COVID...

Just finished Cléo yesterday. What are the chances Nerdwriter

This is crazy!! I was watching this film today and now you have uploaded this video!!!!!
Thank you so much for bringing attention to this movie, and director. I think I have to go down the Agnes Varda rabbit hole now.

Being for others is what ultimately makes women so vulnerable and dependent on other people, especially on men. Good one. Thanks
This is a movie I liked well enough as I watched it. Your analysis has given me a deeper appreciation for it!
i underestimated the power of the goosebumps i felt in this video. thank you
Comment sections are toxic on most channels, but when it comes to Nerdwriter, everyone is just here for the art.
Just finished this movie today, looked up Varda and here’s Nerdwriter brilliantly illuminating an incandescent film

Favorite channel + favorite director = happiness of the day!
I got to see this in the theater back in January of 2020...it was one of my last big-screen viewings before the pandemic shut the theaters down...
So now you can watch “visages villages” in other words “faces places” is a documentary which include Agnes Varda👍🏼

I really wanted to explore the filmography and you gave me reasons to do it.Not just one but several reasons.

Nah. That's life. The way you dress. Your opinions. It's all a mirror. Very few people are true to themselves.
A friend of mine doesn’t care for it because of that
Beautiful, intelligent, masterful - thank you for introducing me to Agnes Varda
@nerdwriter you are the only review/analysis vlog that I don't mind exposing myself to even before I have seen them referred to in your work...
Simply Beautiful
To paraphrase a line from a song, I find solace in the privilege to watch your essays
i hope more people watch the movie now because of you!

One of my favorite films, I need to rewatch it soon.
When cleo explores her freedom, she walks down the stairs dancing. Oh wait. I saw the same kind of scene in Joker.
