Genuinely curious: is there a reason why guitarists who can fingerpick don’t use thumb picks vs going into hybrid picking? Hybrid picking blows my mind, but every time I try it, I just want to drop the pick…
Personally I just don't like the sound thumb pick produces. My past experience with thumb pick was that it is always too long. I'm a Jazz III kind of person.
I prefer hybrid picking because you can easily switch the angle of attack on your pick. This allows for better switches between hybrid picking and (percussive) strumming. The thumb pick feels a little bit "stiff" and locked to your thumb in my opinion. May just be me not being used to it though. The thumb pick has the advantage of allowing you to use your regular fingerpicking technique with little adaptation, if you are using the regular technique with timr-fingers. With hybrid-picking you normally use your thumb and indexfinger to hold your pick and r and m -fingers for fingerpicking, making the "standard-technique" having one less finger to pick a seperate string. You can mitigate this "flaw" of hybrid-picking by utilising your pinky for picking, thiugh. It is quite a difficult task but can be very rewarding to learn since it combines best of both worlds in that case.
