and strangle the kid that can do all this crazy stuff when you're still strugling with pentatonic scales for the last 20 years, with a broken E string.
i mean this is somewhat mathrock but i’d argue people don’t remember or understand the roots of it anymore. math rock now just kinda means “sounds like polyphia”, when polyphia are hardly a math rock band themselves
Very true! When I think math rock I think ttng, giraffes giraffes, delta sleep, tera melos, Don cab, hella. Math rock is so much more than just polyphia lol. Chon and Yvette still don’t get enough credit tbh.
@@swatchcovers5401 100% bro. TTNG are definitely my favourite mathrock band cause animals is just purely amazing. And yes, Yvette definitely needs more recognition as Covet is definitely instrumental mathrock as she actually does do stuff that isn’t 4/4
To be honest, that level 3 what Nik did was my Favorite in the whole Video. Sounded lot like an Anime ost to be honest😅🤌 Didnt expect he would do that great👌
The "unplug your guitar" joke was underrated. What a throwback lmao. Manuel was so fucking revolutionary in the guitar world that he split the guitar community in half; people who believed it and people who demanded he redo the video with a metronome LOL
I think that was the best thing that ever happened to Manuel. Took the criticism in stride and is 10x more respected now that he’s proven everyone wrong.
He's very dedicated to his craft. I do think the callouts were necessary to push some guitarists to provide more content and showcase more raw ability. Always feels great to prove people wrong. Not pointing fingers but there's 2 "guitarists" who are severely lacking at proving themselves. I'll just say the first names Charles and Lucas
Phenomenal playing! But one thing: however much I love this style of music, math rock is so much more than just Polyphia and clean guitar over trap beats. Check out Invalids, TTNG, Delta Sleep, Standards, and begin the journey into literal insanity.
Despite all the toxicity social media and the internet has brought to our society , one thing it’s done so well is to allow awesome musicians like Nik and Manuel to collab . It’s done so much for music overall and while many genres have over saturation , when you get to the level of Manuel , Ichika , Tim , Scottie , Tosin etc you can’t really oversaturate that because it takes raw skill and talent to do as well as years /decades of dedication
i fell in love with mathrock in 2005 and even if i not hear it that much anymore, i always come back to it :) as a former drummer im always into the combination of harmonics at strings and nice progressive drums
Just wanted to mention that math rock was not originally the kind of hype music that e.g. Polyphia plays (with trap beat and other poppy stuff), check out older bands like Hella, Tera Melos, Giraffes? Giraffes!, Don Caballero or even first CHON albums to get the real math rock vibes)
This may be my age showing here, but I honestly thought it was gonna be like a botch, Dillinger escape plan sounding video. This was a pleasant surprise tho! Amazing playing by both you dudes

Hilarious. Although I’d say this is more ‘modern math rock’. As an old head, I consider proggy stuff with weird time signatures and frequent key changes like Rush and King Crimson to be the archetype for math rock.
Manuel is such an absolute monster I can't even handle it. Saw him in one of Jareds shred collabs and been a fan ever since. He's on that inspirational level of talent.
How is it possible for EVERY SINGLE PART of this to sound so good? Guitar wizardry like this should be illegal! Anyway, this was my favorite of your 10 Levels videos. Stay awesome!
I still remember when I watched you attempt math rock for the first time. Just incredible. I know we joke a lot about quitting as musicians but fr don’t. Your playing and your compositions get better with every new release
Listening to Manuel's music is the closest i've ever felt to heaven (same with Ichika and Polyphia to some extent and I've yet to discover more artists in this "genre") . It's truly hard to understand why so many people say math rock is robotic and doesn't convey emotions .
Manuel always seems to bring it and HARD with these collab videos! This was also just a great idea for a video showcasing some of the fundamental techniques and then putting them all together at the end.
Noice one man Cool that u seem to be getting a better understanding of the modern scene of this genre since the reacting to match rock vid. Would definitely recommend checking out some of the roots if you haven't already like toe and american football and tricot
Waiting for the surprise drop of Nik blasting out a full Ichiko-Polyphia medley and making it look easy ;) Until then, I'll be appreciating the excellent Level 3 with those slides. That was still pretty damned sweet,
Been waiting a long time for this one for Math Rock man, incredible stuff. I'm convinced Tim has a 6th finger and we just haven't noticed because his hands are moving too fast.
I hesitate to actually call this this Math Rock. I don't really know what to call it because it has some influence from Math Rock but this seems to take influence from a few other areas too. I'd say this Polyphia style of rock takes quite a bit of influence from Tosin Abasi's style from early Animals As Leaders, Aaron Marshall's style from Intervals, and probably some of that Jazz Fusion style from Plini. Which makes sense as Polyphia started around the same time as all three of them. But it also has some of that midwest emo kind of sound and the obvious hip hop influence. I'm not quite sure what to call this genre of music, but I don't think Math Rock is the right one for it. When I think of Math Rock, I usually think of bands like: Converge, American Football, Agent Fresco, Oceansize, Arcane Roots, Black Peaks, The Fall of Troy, Protest the Hero (kind of cheating on this one but whatever) and stuff like that. I don't really know what to make of this...Polyphia/Chon/Covet style, but I don't think it fits in Math Rock. This is just my opinion though and I think this style of music is an entirely different beast.
personnaly i think chon and covet really fit into the genre of math rock, they fit all of the criterias. But polyphia and unprocessed are absolutely not math rock, it's another genre that has yet to get a name
Thank you for inviting me bro! Turned out sick ✨
It was sick 🔥
Manuel ❤️ killed it as always, can't wait to see you in Philly
Hey Manuel, wie wäre es mit einer Collab mit Charlie Robbins?
That whammy bar flutter and slide thingy was........ wow
Math Rock makes me want to simultaneously practice and jam but also give up
:D
lol

Nik did great too! He downplays his ability too much.
Nik brought the sauce on these, love it
well they colabed on REAL by unprocessed

hard agree
This was more like; 10 levels of sounding like Polyphia 🤷♂️🥳
Nik: “lemme get this backing track for the percussion”
MGF: “lemme just use all 43 of my fingers for the percussion”
One day Nik's gonna have to turn all of these into actual songs

The Polyphia is strong in this one.

Manuel has an unbelievable gift for guitar. Love his music
I'm always mostly excited for the faces in the top right corner especially from the collab partners. luv it

Trying to play the riff from G.O.A.T. at the end then just saying NO was my favorite part.
