Seeing that old Pokémon commercial brings back old memories of that one commercial where a bunch of Pokémon get loaded onto a school bus and then they just get brutally compacted and crushed into a Game Boy as they all try to escape, to no avail. It may not actually be as bad as I remember, but I had nightmares of that happening on school trips. Edit: I just searched and found it again and HOLY HELL it really is as weird and dark and unsettling as I remembered.
All of this stuff makes me wonder: since we live in the internet age where we can patch and sell DLC to expand a game at any given time, why has no developer decided to patch in easter eggs and then re-patch to remove them just to fuck around with people. Then when they figured it out and started to archive different game patches to preserve the different easter eggs, it turns out if you mix and match files from the patches you can unlock even more easter eggs and the developers were playing fourth dimensional chess the entire time. Alternatively, just pull a OneShot with the Solstice Ending and don't patch the extra content in until a certain date. It's not the same thing, since it's not like the content is IN THERE just waiting for the right combination of mythological inputs and all you can do little but speculate until the actual release, unlike the myths in this video that required active participation from interested parties even if that wasn't the intention of the developers at all. But it's still something to keep that mystery going. This video made me spend way more brain cells than I wanted to, so I'm going to go have a drink now.
@@tostupidforname I just googled that and damn, that was a great move by TobyFox. And to keep this chain going, Arc System Works got so mad when people datamined the upcoming season pass DLC characters for BlazBlue Cross Tag Battle when they hadn't announced them yet by finding the announcer files in the game that when they announced the second season pass they pre-emptively patched in a shitload of announcer voices for every single character possible just so people wouldn't be able to datamine who was going to be released anymore.

Hey Tom, Great work. I love your channel, really refreshing content and I love your humor. It's rare that I find such a gem. I'm absolutely sure that you're about to blow up. Thank you!
The Luigi myth in Mario 64 hit hard. I didn't hear about it from another kid, it just didn't make sense in my 12-year-old head that there would be no Luigi in a Mario game. So I invented a stupid quest of finding all the stars and looking at every corner of each level to find him, hiding somewhere. Hell, I was even convinced that I could find Yoshi. After I found out that I could pass through the middle tower of the castle (because of a missing collider), I tried finding more of these 'special' walls in the hope of finding him. It was just pointless. Basically, all I was doing was just finding more broken colliders that haven't pass Quality Insurance, and that's it, but for 12 years old me, this was just another hint that there was something more to find. Jesus, the thing you can convince yourself of doing at that age.

I feel like nobody ever remembers the Six Lifts from GTA3. There were 6 car lifts under the portland bridge, and people were CERTAIN that if you took one of each gang car there and managed to get them on the lifts, something would happen. That was a big, big, big active myth when the game came out and nobody seems to remember it!

Sorry, but I think you missed something in Shadow of the Colossus. If you go up to the secret garden and look at the North wall at just the right angle, then the vines spell “my body is ready,” which everyone knows is Japanese for “L is Real 2401.” So basically what that means is you have to be on your 2,401st playthrough, defeat the colosseums in reverse order, go back to the garden and wait 2,401x16 seconds before turning off your xBocks 360. Go to the nearest bathroom, turn off all the lights and say “mamma mia” in the mirror 2,401 times. And that’s how to get Waluigi in Smash.
I was born too late to experience "playground video game rumours." I sometimes wish there was still a way to experience that. Perhaps an online-only game such as an MMO that keeps a secret hidden behind triggers that are only checked for server-side, keeping the assets for that secret also server-side only and loading it client-side when needed.
There's this obscure game for the Gameboy Colour called Magi-Nation that was crazy for secrets, which was weird because it like... Wasn't even a very known game. I recall hearing talk online of rumors It was a very unusual game in that it had a lot of doors which could not be opened, sometimes literally, combined with a lot of obscure hidden areas and genuine secrets that a typical player would be deeply unlikely to find. For example, if you continually return to the tutorial area and ask for battles throughout the game, the tutorial girl you fight will gradually have her monsters - called weebos, who are the weakest monsters on the game - level up. Towards the very end, they will all hit max level, and this girl turns in to a super-boss as all her weak mook monsters unlock the absolute most powerful attack in the game. This is like, a TYPICAL secret in this game. The biggest one? There is an entire B-route through the game which requires you to do a bunch of counterintuitive bullshit, and missing even one action will break the entire event chain. The story isn't changed, but you unlock the very strongest monster - and a boss fight against four of them at once, beforehand. It involves you losing to a secret boss and instantly running back to fight it, at one point using an infinite-money exploit repeatedly afford a boat, clearing a bonus dungeon to save a dying NPC and then not saving him, and performing a hidden series of actions to force a room to become engulphed in fungus. It's like they deliberately went in to this game attempting to put in a Playground Rumor-esque secret into it To this day, I have no idea what is true and what isn't in this game, in some places. For instance, I've heard sketchy rumors of a guy that can forge monsters of the Villain Faction, but don't know if that's actually true

I feel weird about this because, as interesting and enthralling as mystery can make something... I do WANT to KNOW. Like I am not and will never be satisfied with just not knowing the answer, I HAVE to know, that's the whole point of curiosity in the first place, that's why mysteries are so compelling, because we do want to know. And I am happier now knowing in great detail the actual mechanics of Pokemon's glitches, and the actual truth behind Ermac and Skarlet and all the rest. I appreciate the answers to these questions, I feel satisfied with what I've learned. Asked and answered. I guess what I miss, if anything (and I don't really know if I really do miss this tbh), is that the answers come so quickly now. In the past they had more room to breath and we had more time to ruminate on them, but now you can just datamine a thing day 1 and be done with it. I guess it's less about the mystery not having enough time to build up confusion and hype and more about the fact that there is never any uncertainty anymore. Even when mysteries like this do have enough time to sprout and grow into a beautiful butterfly, it's not something I ever feel like I WON'T know, it's just a matter of time, and if all you're asking of me is to wait a month or so before a developer tweets an answer to why there's a weird unused sprite in their indie game, then that's not really the same thing as trying to figure out what the fuck Missingno. is, is it? But still, I prefer having things answered. In the specific case of Shadow of the Colossus, it is disappointing that there's really nothing there, but at least we know. And that kills the mystery in the real world, sure, but inside the game, that lingering sense of "what the hell is all of this cryptic temple nonsense for?" will never really go away, even if the real world answer is that there isn't any deeper meaning or secrets in the game, the world the game builds is in and of itself a monument to that sense of mystery. Even when the answer is "nothing" that's still there.
