    hey Dave, one little "error" i would rather place DNA mutation one step earlier. as all the other true mechanisms depend on changes in DNA to happen, theres nothing to drift/select/flow, etc if there is no genetic variation.

    • @galileog8945
      @galileog8945 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not true, the other mechanisms are totally independent from single mutations.

    • @agustinfranco0
      @agustinfranco0 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@galileog8945 well first, DNA mutation is not exclusively single point mutations. there are many other forms of mutations (any change to the DNA)
      and no, they are not independent, they need the variation for it to happen, and how do you get variation without it?

    • @San_Vito
      @San_Vito ปีที่แล้ว

      @@agustinfranco0 Recombination results in changes in the genome and it's definitely not a form of mutation. So no, not any change of DNA is a mutation.

      @@San_Vito how is that not a form of mutation?
      heres the definition of a mutation: "the changing of the structure of a gene, resulting in a variant form that may be transmitted to subsequent generations, caused by the alteration of single base units in DNA, or the deletion, insertion, or rearrangement of larger sections of genes or chromosomes."
      any change to the DNA is a mutation.

      Fitness, in this context, means the ability to leave offspring, more offspring = better fitness. so if an animal survives longer and reproduces more times, it leaves more offspring, if it reproduces only once but more offspring is produced from that mating, its also better. etc, there are many way it can be affected.
      and thats it, whatever happens that makes the organism leave more offspring will increase its fitness and the likelyhood it will be a stablished characteristic in the new population. there is no "goal", no endgame or anything like that.

      @@agustinfranco0 " but radioactivity doesnt work like that, '
      i understood that i would have a hard to explaining this.
      first it depends on the radiation.
      if it's the one kind that can't penetrate your skin, being bound up inside a living organism would essentially neutralize/contain it.
      it' it's the penetrating kind, which iirc plutonium/uranium is [gamma], then being taken up inside an organism wouldn't be as effective.
      otoh, iirc, organisms resist penetrating radiation because they have certain compounds inside their cells that tend to absorb and covert high energy so it doesn't damage the DNA.
      i think that's free radicals, but it's been a long minute [rather, compounds that when they abosrb are converted into free radical].
      slow decayers, again iirc, emit high penetrating energy but slowly w a long half life.
      so that radiation being bound up inside organisms surrounded by compounds evolved to absorb it would possibly mitigate it's danger to other organisms.
      i should probably fact check myself by googling all this,
      but it's a conversation about something i don't think would work anyway.
