I'm going to be real for a sec. I was a little Black boy living in Oakland Ca, and loved that movie like no other. I have watched that movie more times than I can remember. I never noticed the confederate flag on that car until I saw someone complaining about it a couple years ago. Let me tell you this. I didn't care about it then, and I don't care about it now. I will still sit back and watch that movie with the same joy In my heart as if I was a kid. Those who never watched, and complained couldn't see every race helping the Bandit, frog who is very beautiful, and the infamous Snowman! CGI action movies today can't touch the real action and stunt scenes, and the comedic genius of Jackie. When I got old enough, and funds was good enough. You damn right I bought me a Trans Am!

When Burt mentioned that the sales of Trans Ams went up 700% because of the popularity of 'Smokey and the Bandit' I just smiled and nodded my head knowing that I contributed to that number. Mine was a '79, fire engine red, 6.6 automatic and boy could that car move! Had it up to 150mph one night in North Carolina. Never saw telephone poles that close together in my life! Got a speeding ticket in every state on the East coast and even lost my license for 90 days in North Carolina, but not for the 150mph night. That's another story. Of all the cars I've owned in my lifetime, that's the one car I would love to have back. That's impossible now though because the person I sold it to wrecked it within three months of owning it. Breaks my heart to know that.

When that movie came out I was 10 years old and my family had just moved to Nashville from Baltimore MD. I knew nothing about country music or knew who any of the stars were. I was unaware that, "Mr. Jerry" from across the street was famous at all. he was the kindest, nicest man and neighbor. It wasn't until I saw this movie at a drive-in while visiting relatives in Canada that I connected the two. When Jerry Reed's character came on, I said, "That looks just like Mr. Jerry" RIP Mr. Jerry. You will be missed!

Breaking the 4th wall is not done often, because it usually breaks the "spell" of the viewer's feeling that they are watching something happening on the screen. However, I think it somehow fit perfectly with the outrageous tongue-in-cheek comedic energy that Burt, Jackie and the others maintained on full-throttle throughout the entire film. The original 'Smokey and the Bandit' was essentially a 'B' movie meant for Drive-In's as the opening feature to other 'first-run' shows in 1977. The Mustang Drive-In near Peterborough, Ontario ran the movie for over 2 months as the featured film (the second movie to be shown nightly). The Mustang was the largest Drive-in theatre in Canada at the time, and lines of vehicles waiting to go through the temporary quadruple box office entrance spread in two directions. By the Provincial Police (who were doing traffic control nightly) it was estimated each line of cars was over a mile in length north and south. I lived in the rural subdivision where the Mustang was located, from early June to mid-August 1977 that line-up of Drive-in patrons stretched past my house (going north). My Dad finally took our family to see the movie at the Mustang (and to see what all the fuss was about) in the first week of August of that year, and the Drive-In was still at-near capacity. Smokey and the Bandit made history.

I was 10 years old in 1977 and my dad took me to see Smokey & The Bandit (at the Farmington Civic for those Michiganders out there) not because it starred Burt Reynolds but because it featured Jackie Gleason. Looking back, I think he regretted it just a bit due to the profanity and his desire to shield his son from it (similar to when Sheriff Justice says, “I have my young son in the car and I don’t want to hear that kind of language”). My dad was Jackie’s biggest fan and he went to see every one of his movies. The funny thing is that my dad laughed so hard that many times I couldn’t hear the next line including the profanity. His laughter was the best censor for me and everyone in the 2 rows in front and behind us. I write this with tears in my eyes because I wish they were all still here: Jackie, Burt, Jerry and my dad.

Paul Williams had one of the funniest lines in the movie, and it's one that doesn't get too much attention; it's the exchange at the start between Big and Little Enos and Bandit where he tries to insult him, where Bandit says, "Why don't you just say something nasty about my mother?" and without missing a beat, Little Enos starts with, "Your momma is so ugly, that.." and gets cut off before the payoff. It's just classic.
