Thank you so much for this! I’ve been wanting to get into the flow arts and I’ve felt very drawn towards the staff. Sadly I am not too wealthy so buying one of the fancy ones online is not really an option for me. This would be perfect!
Thanks Christopher. My advice would be to learn the basic spinning moves first: forward and reverse weave with both hands, front rotor in both directions, behind the back and behind the head passes in both directions, as well as how to pivot your body and move while spinning. Learning these basics first will allow you to spin all around your body and move around while spinning, without ever binding up. Focus on keeping everything in wall plane, and make sure all your pivots are 180 degrees.
You should a 1 inch diameter dowel. They sell this at most hardware stores in pre cut lengths, and they usually sell it by the foot at home depot, just make sure yu choose a straight one becase the dowels at home depot are all kinds of curvy.
I just got into this art, does this practice staff have weight to it?? I've found the heavier the better in a way. But if not, this is probably super cheap to make, and for now, cheap is the best! Once I get better i can upgrade to a heavier one if I want.. just curious though. thank you!
It is helpful to have more weight on the ends if you are doing contact, it keeps the momentum of the spin going better. if you want more weight on the ends just add more inner tubes.
Hey Jessie, I was wondering what dimensions i should buy the dowel stick in, specifically the thickness of the wood. If you could get back to me on here I'd greatly appreciate I'm anxious to start spinning a new art.
