    Hey John! You were my percussion/drum line instructor at Page middle school a looooong time ago. 2009ish maybe. I’m damn near 30 now and still appreciate/remember you as one of my favorite teachers. Hope all is well!

    Great video John. I have to admit I didn't know the "Rockabilly Shuffle." Not exactly how you demonstrate here anyway. Thanks for sharing😀

    Also known as a “train beat” which stems from New Orleans street band style drums being condensed into 1 person/drum set

    I never think of that little fill as a paradiddle. To me it's just RLL (as a 8th note triplet starting on the down beat). If you think about each beat (quarter note), 1, 2, 3, 4, then you could do RLL on each beat as even triplets. You can put these little groups of RLL on any of the beats, or all of them. By thinking of it this way, it's easier for me. (The lead in left hand note just joins into it but doesn't create the little grouping itself -- if that makes sense).
    Also, you can do other combinations, like RRL, or RLR, creating different accents on different surfaces.
    Also, as a rockabilly drummer I rarely ever do the rim clicks. That's definitely a thing that happens since the 80s, but the older styles less so, in my opinion. I certainly wouldn't reduce rockabilly drumming to train shuffles on the snare/rim. Learn hihat shuffles and ride cymbal shuffles too. (blues drumming essentially), also straighten these beats out but keep the double hands playing to get an authentic rock n roll style. Check out sun records rockabilly and copy. It's a simple style but to do it authentically it takes a lot of listening and restraint.

      Thanks for the comment and good points. I like how you noted the distinction between trad rockabilly and newer styles. Likewise, I too use a lot of pa-da-das (RLL, RRL), but in this video I use the paradiddle to accent the up beat (especially for drummers that don’t regularly play in this style). Again, great comments and keep drumming.

    Cool lesson. I've been working on the train beat, but the swung eights makes this a bit trickier.
    Also, that bass drum looks gorgeous.

    I love shuffles; I'm a shuffle man. Can you do a video on the Chicago/Texas Shuffles, and the Swing Shuffle as well? Almost every video I've found on the Swing Shuffle has it all wrong. Love your videos ✌🏼

    • @johnowensdrums
      @johnowensdrums  หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      In this video I am using the Remo Fibersyn (Powerstroke version). Evans has Calftone heads, which are similar (I've tried them out). Personally, I like the tone and response of Fiberskyns, which I have been using for a long time. I believe the Evans G1 is the same an an Remo Ambassador.

      I use Innovative Percussion Hybrid (IP-HB) drum sticks. I'm a huge fan of these sticks, as they are nicely balanced and work for a number of styles.

    Hi bro, I'm from Peru and I've been following you for days and I really like your videos a lot but I have a doubt about what patches you use for your tarol

    • @johnowensdrums
      @johnowensdrums  ปีที่แล้ว

      When you say patches do you mean drum heads? By "tarol" I believe you're talking about the snare drum. If you are talking about the drum heads I use Remo Fiberskins, which give an old school sound.

    Hi John. Firstly, thanks for the lesson :) Question: Instead of L RLL R, Could I do L RRL R? I assume it would sound very similar but is there any particular reason that you're recommending the LL instead of RR?

    • @johnowensdrums
      @johnowensdrums  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      This is a great question. This sticking allows the accent to be on the dominant hand (for me), as the doubles are taps (unaccented notes). You could flip the sticking around, but then you’d have to accent the second note of the right hand diddle. This a doable, but I find it easier to make the accents pop using the sticking in the video. Thanks and keep drumming.

      @@johnowensdrums I guess the opposite way comes naturally for me. I'll try practicing it your way and I'm sure once I keep doing it it'll feel normal. Thanks again! 😊

    • @johnowensdrums
      @johnowensdrums  ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Absolutely, as most shuffles are played with one hand on the hi-hat or ride. This variation is commonly used in upbeat Rockabilly to add some variety and speed. Here is a video I made that shows a basic shuffle, which is also used in this style: th-cam.com/video/8_RYTpgh6vE/w-d-xo.html
