Is that snare a Rogers DynaSonic?
It’s an old Premier Genista.
I love that! i mastered different accents of the paradiddle just few weeks ago and this video just drops. Hell yeah it rocks
Awesome and I’m glad it was helpful. Keep drumming.
✌🏼♥️
I'm so happy I discovered this channel. I'm self taught and I started playing in september and I only learn from yt videos and I love how you're straight to the point and clear. I'll surely watch the other videos in the description.
There's a lot of criticism about this not being the true Brazilian way to play the beat. Samba has evolved significantly, especially in jazz contexts. There's no single "true" Brazilian way to play it anymore. "Jazz Samba" (1950s) isn't as old as "Samba" which originated in the 17th century, but the more modern version of "Samba" evolved around the late 19th/early 20th centuries. Duke Ellington was one that loved the style and adapted it with jazz, and was only really born and began evolving then. All genres and subgenres have started in one country and have spread/evolved in others. If they're different from how they were played in the country of origin, it doesn't make them "wrong" (music shouldn't be "right" or "wrong," unless it's strictly written on a score - which is not jazz), it just makes it different. *Look at rap. 1970s New York - New York doesn't own the genre. You listen to rap all over the world and it's very different, but none of it is "wrong." Some people seem to even be disregarding the fact that this isn't "Samba" and isn't going to adhere to every element of traditional Samba for that reason; it's "Jazz Samba" so it's been mixed with the genre with literally the fewest strict rules. He's teaching rhythmic concepts and technique regardless of what label you want to put on it. Jazz Samba was a difficult style for me, especially never having heard it before playing drums. I knew Latin beats were something I wanted to learn when I started playing drums and this is the one that just about broke my brain. This was my mental wall I had to break through and then the 4-limb independence beats came easier.
Nice skills I subscribed.
Thanks, and keep drumming!
I'm a beginner and ghost notes have been popping up i my feed and I can't wait to try this one out. Thanks a lot!
Have fun and keep drumming,
Even when you make it easy it still looks hard. I guess i better keep practicing
I slow it way down in the video, which is how I suggest practicing it. Once you get the hang of it, start speeding it up. I hope that helps and keep drumming.
Ah. Nice solution. So you gotta throw the first beat on there hard, and use the fingers to snap out the other two beats. Cause a lot of rebound, and use the fingers to make use of that rebound. Like a double stroke, but with another beat and more energy put into the system. Right?
Exactly! If you put it on a ride cymbal, it is a little different if you want to accent the last beat of the 3, but for most stuff (3s, flam taps, flam accents, etc) that require triple strokes throw it down and support it with the fingers. Keep drumming.
@johnowensdrums Oh man. Lol. This will feel like triple kick pedal but worse. 🤣🤣🤣🤣 Thank ya!
thanks!
You're welcome and keep drumming!
❤
This is american samba not brasilian
Add fills please
I was just looking through my channel I have some fill videos, but I will add more. Thanks for the suggestion and keep drumming. Also, here is a fill video that might be of interest. th-cam.com/video/nzykFtsnw0M/w-d-xo.html
I love a well put together Frankenset. Which drums do you have going on there? I love this lesson, I was pondering just this last night. Dynamics are key! ✌🏼
I’m glad you dig the kit and I agree, dynamics are everything. The drums are 20” Ludwig Maple Bass, 14” Premier Genista Snare, 12” & 13” Birch Premier toms. Cymbals are 20” Ride & 14” hats (Zildjian K). Thanks for the comment and keep drumming.
thats sick man
Thanks and keep drumming.
I'm pretty good at drumming I'm a Guitar player..I allways noted the best players non stop kick the high hat. When I was 10 in 1994 I had seen Tre Cool allways did.
A lot of drummers keep the left foot going. To make it a bit more intricate other patterns can used, such us upbeats, quarters, or other patters (like a clave rhythm).
Nice stuff! Good lesson ✌🏼
Thanks and keep drumming.
Can u do metal rock and other stuff next or are you are only fluent in jazz
I play just about everything. What concepts are you interested in? I have students working on double bass concepts (I’ve played in rock, punk, and metal bands). Also, you can check out my channel for lots of different styles.
Complex latin rhymes and exploring the upper intermediate level
There are videos on songo, mambo, samba, bossa, bolero, and other Latin beats on my channel. I’ll be sure to put some more in my queue.
Do u play any other instruments like guitar and stuff like that
Noice!
Wait! What about the swingy dingy? That beat moves MAD weight (with its variations especially).
Very true, but the swing groove is a variation of the shuffle. I do include swing in my free “6 Basic Drum Grooves” e-book: www.tacticaldrumming.com
@johnowensdrums That is a fair point. And thanks for ze link. I'll check it out.
0:50 thats intermediate?
Absolutely, I’m just taking a simple RLRL pattern and adding diddles between the accents. I slow it way down later in the video/lesson. Thanks for the comment and keep drumming.
WISH by Nine inch Nails. Right out of the gate.
"Wish" has a great intro. I had to listen to it again (it's been a while), but it is similar. The only difference is that "Wish" is straight and the Rockabilly shuffle is swung. I appreciate the comment and keep drumming.
Good job
Thanks
That is not a d-beat
Thank you
You're welcome and keep drumming.
Subscribed. ADD as shit, not at all what I was looking for, but absolutely an amazing resource to have handy. Thanks!!
I'm a life long guitar player who wants to switch to drums and going to look at a Pearl Export 5 piece series tomorow that comes with 2 Ziljian cymbals, a Ziljian high hat, throne, and two sound proof wall pieces. She's asking 750$ . They look pretty good, not shiny new looking but good. Evans skins that are in fair shape. Does that sound steep or fair?
I know this was a while ago, but it really depends on a lot of things, such as the type of Zildjian cymbals, hardware, condition, head types, lots of stuff. If it helps, here is an article I wrote on buying used drums: www.tacticaldrumming.com/post/quick-guide-to-buying-used-drums
@johnowensdrums I bought them, I think it was not the best deal but not the worst. Somewhere in middle. Drums are frickin hard to learn but I love playing them. Even playing along to Phil Rudd is harder than I thought it would be !!! We'll for a beginner it isn't 😂
@@ChristopherAdam42 Good heads will make any drums sing and Pearl Exports are solid drums (I have a number of students that use them). Drums take time, keep at it everyday and you'll keep getting better and better.
Thank you sir🙂
You’re most welcome and keep drumming.
Good tutorial. thank you:)
Glad it was helpful and keep drumming.
This also works for klezmer
Yes it does.
Thanks! I was looking for this, sounds tasty
You're welcome and keep drumming!
It’s called the cash beat for punk rock
I've never tried it. It looks hard but fun. And I can't do it. 1:55
Awesome and keep drumming.
Let's be real - that intro fill goes waaaaay beyond what 99% of HC punk drummers were capable of :D
"that left hand"
You’re an amazing teacher man!! Wow!
Thanks and I hope it was helpful. Keep drumming.
Snare, kick and hi hat sounds awesome
Thanks and keep drumming.
🔥🔥💥💥
Thank for sharing! I tried it, and preferred one small change: rrllrlrkll.
You could also maintain the sticking and add the kick where you placed it, best of both worlds. Of course, the linear kick is cool too. Thanks and keep drumming.
Any fills
Any fills for this
Nice video man! can you maybe make a video on patterns that use the tresillo/332 rhythm. you can make so many nice sounding patterns with it like snare kick kick snare kick kick snare kick, snare snare kick snare snare kick snare kick. you can play stuff like that as a 8th note or 16th note pattern. there are also variations on that 332 pattern like 664. usally the 664 patterns is used with 16th notes only so for example rlrlrR rlrlR rlrl or R rlr R rlr rlrl. i have never seen a video covering all these variations you can make out of the tresillo rhythm so i would really appreciate you making one if you can :)
I’ll put it in the queue. I use 332 grooves all the time.
cool.. thanks!
You bet and keep drumming!
Drag rudiment
I’ll make a drag video next. Thanks for the suggestion.
when I hear this groove slow all I think of is My Sharona.
That would be a great punk cover.
W tutorial
That was absolutely dope, Mr. Owens👌🏼
Thanks and keep drumming.
This is a great lesson, thanks for breaking down the differences between what the left and right hand are doing
Glad it was helpful!
That groove you slipped in at the end is great. I spent a while zeroing in on your left hand and the dynamics of the hi hat. Thanks. Some intermediate players might think it's basic, but then if they try it, they find it's not easy to duplicate.
I appreciate that, as I believe the little details make good grooves. The hi-hat dynamics and ghost notes are subtle, but essential to the overall groove. Thanks for watching and keep drumming.
no one plays like this... lmao
No one plays eighth note fills or the groove? Having played and listened to a lot of tunes, I find that the 8th note fill is used in tons of songs. Thanks for the comment and keep drumming.
